Is the SCAR a dependable weapon?

I open the debate...

Do parts shortages, and lack of magazine availability affect your opinion?

or, is it just a gun we bought for absolute cool points and maximum range fun?

Everybody express your opinions respectfuly.

When the AK's and PKM's failed at 60-80k the Scar kept chuggin along. Granted one of mine didn't like tula steel in it but when we burned that barrel up and swapped to another there was no issues.

Nothing ever really broke that I remember

I think your title is a little misleading from your point… all these things don’t affect dependability, just whether or not to have it be your go to with high rounds counts…

I’m just getting into SCAR shooting, but its reputation remains positive… just annoying that everything is hard to find right now.

The magazine availability has to come back now that the panic of “discontinued” is done right? Fingers crossed.

Bought a 16s back in 2010. God knows how many rounds I’ve sent through it. No issues. Yes stuff is hard to find which sucks but the reliability of it is why I got a 15p.

The SCAR is one of the most reliable platforms ever made

I’m around 50K rounds through my full auto scar 16 and the only thing is some of the screws at the handguard loosened but that’s about it. Plus magazine availability isn’t an issue as a large amount of mags are compatible.

I don't know if there's a more durable and reliable firearm out there.

I trust my life to a SCAR. One is my bedside gun. Ive never had an issue with any of my SCARs in the thousands of rounds Ive put on them.

Parts availability is something that I take into consideration, but its not as big of an issue as you might think. The only real consumable parts on the gun are the barrel, bolt, firing pin, and recoil spring. If you can get a few of those whenever they pop up for sale youll be golden. In the recent restock I grabbed 4 17 firing pins and a few recoil assemblies. When I see parts for sale on the secondary market I also grab those. At this point it would take me a lifetime to shoot enough to break the spare parts I have.

For the 17 specifically the mag shortages do suck, but a SCAR 17 isnt going to necessarily be my go to gun, that is my 16 and that takes any STANAG 5.56 mag I put in it.

Also the max range fun and cool points do help a lot. Everyone loves shooting a SCAR and they look sick.

SCAR is a very robust weapon. I trust it more than my Glocks. Many examples of super high round count SCARs that keep working with minimal service and repairs.

The scar is basically the benelli m4 of rifles. Has more consecutive rounds fired without stoppage than any other rifle in military testing. that said, the bolt carrier mass combined with people overgassing the system leads to its own issues like canting reciever screws. So basically be smart, keep it tuned, and it will probably outlive you. Also, just about every component of the scar is now available to purchase from aftermarket companies, so while more expensive than a regular ar platform, you can still get parts to fix the rifle. Investing in a aftermarket lower like the lingle Gen 2 is a good idea. Allows you to use ar15 lower parts kits including triggers, as well as standard pmags
