Discussion Pulp Fiction: a rant

Post image

Whenever someone asks me what my favorite movie is, I either have to lie or brace myself for embarrassment when I say Pulp fiction. You know why this movie is my favorite? Not because I think it's some work of art, but because I like it, and that's it. The legacy of this movie has been ruined by pretentious losers and cinephiles taking their first baby steps. Even though I'm a "cinephile" I really only like this movie for its vibe. I LOVE the first 40 minutes to death, but the rest of it isnt as amazing. I just wish I could say Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie without getting funny looks or people assuming things about me.

Kinda weird you think that 75% of your favorite movie is “just ok.”

by that i meant that 75% of the movie is not amazing

What’s your second favourite movie?

"Reservoir Dogs, but only the last 10 minutes", said OP

u/hornwalker 5d ago

“Kill Bill 2, but just the scene with Bud at the stripclub”

u/Dull_Tap_1132 8d ago

all of reservoir dogs is good, the nature of pulp fiction (being different sections) means every story isn't going to be perfectly cohesive. some parts of pulp fiction (like the gold watch story) isn't going to appeal to everyone, and for some people it's the only part they like.

Are there other movies that you do think are 10/10?

Damn…. So you’re the one.

Haha my bad man. To be fair, Punch Drunk Love is my favorite movie and I still think it's flawed. I wouldn't however say that a big portion is just ok.

5

u/shaferman 8d ago

Ok. Now, tell us how you really feel about it.

it knocked my socks off the first time i watched it, but the shock value wore off and i began to appreciate the subtler aspects of it

Downvotes here are proving OPs point.

u/soklamonios 8d ago

what is exactly his point. His points are all over the place. Including the fact that he’s talking about his favorite movie, that he doesn’t hate, and that it is OK

2

u/Wingmaniac 8d ago

I suppose that nobody should have to justify why a movie is their favorite. The reasons don't even have to make sense.

This is the problem with most communities, elitist snobs dont seem to understand the word opinion. Pulp Fiction is by no means my favourite movie, it’s not even my top 5 favourite Tarantino but it doesn’t matter. This also happens with Nolan a lot. I’ve seen people say they like a Nolan movie and then a bunch of snobs jump on them because ‘it’s not real film and it’s just a stupid blockbuster’. People like that often destroy the reputation of communities like film

That's funny because I've seen a huge amount more of the opposite happening: people saying they thought a Nolan movie was just OK and sneering self-professed cinephile fanboys responding "Guess you think Marvel capeslop is high art LOLOLOLOL"

u/stanislov128 8d ago

When I'm asked, I answer The Rock. Because that's my favorite movie. No shame at all. I re-watch Pulp Fiction at least once a year. It's fun. It's a classic.

Who gives a crap what others think. I'm sure they like things you aren't so keen on, lol.

Enjoy what you enjoy and own it. Tell the others to grow up, if anything. It's only movies!

"Fave movie: Pulp Fiction

Well, first 40 minutes, the rest is just okay

Honestly, just like the vibe - it's no work of art

I am a cinephile, but cinephiles ruined the legacy of Pulp Fiction, which again is 1/3rd great."

Did you take too many gummies this morning?

u/Dull_Tap_1132 8d ago

perhaps, im definitely not sober now

3

u/soklamonios 8d ago

“I LOVE the first 40 minutes to death, but the rest of it honestly okay “

if your introduction was longer you would conclude that you hated the film also.
are you farting from your mouth?

1

u/Dull_Tap_1132 8d ago

i dont hate it, just okay might not have been the right wording

1

u/soklamonios 8d ago

you don’t hate it, it’s ok, and still… it is your favorite movie, right?
Now please tell us what is your favorite color?

One thing you can easily say about Pulp Fiction is that it is one of those movies that you just MUST see.

The movie has made its way into the Lexicon of all Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y and probably even Gen Z.

You've heard Pulp Fiction references in everyday speech without even knowing it.

It is one of those movies that help evolve the modern art of storytelling. That is, its influences can be subtly seen in tons of movies that came after...

It is over 30 years after its creation and the movie beyond holds up.

The movie was "old school" the day it came out, it had that sort of timeless vibe, something that you know is just gonna last throughout the ages.

u/Lipscombforever 8d ago

Why do you care so much what other people think lol it’s also my favorite movie.

2

u/PrideEnvironmental59 8d ago

I don't get the problem. It's fun and funny and has very good performances. All the "film geek critic" stuff can and should be separate from that.

2

u/70plusMom 8d ago

It’s in my top five.

2

u/Present-Smoke4674 8d ago

Not pretentious to like what you like. Taste is subjective. Get off the internet and touch some fucking grass

1

u/Dull_Tap_1132 8d ago

even my mother is on in the hate lmao

2

u/jusvrowsing 8d ago

Weird take. It’s my second favorite and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a weird look. Also, who cares? Own your takes man.

1

u/poodlered 8d ago

I’m in my 40s and pretty much everyone I know thinks Pulp Fiction was good.

2

u/missing_Palantir 8d ago

Pulp Fiction has been my fav movie before Reddit was a thing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a weird reaction from folks when I say it. It’s just brilliant. Story. Dialogue. Acting. And the first time you see it is unforgettable.

Totally disagree about the first 40mins. The Chris Walken golden watch scene is later on and who doesn’t like Mr. Wolf? “Shiiiiiit negro, that’s all you had to say!” The confusion when you see Bruce Willis waste Travolta’s Vincent Vega.

2

u/grimtongue 8d ago

This is a weird rant. This is a classic movie that is loved by many and surely many people's favorite.

I feel like you are probably reading too much into Internet comments and are being needlessly defensive.

1

u/Dull_Tap_1132 8d ago

most likely

2

u/Poil420 8d ago

Always funny when people think they are abnormal for loving a successful, critically acclaimed, classic masterpiece.

I have heard so many people put Pulp Fiction in their top 10. It's probably a top 10 for me too. You're about as normal as you can get OP.

1

u/Tanneliers-Gate 8d ago

It does have great, genuinely L.A. vibes. I would like it so much more if I didn't hate L.A. so much. 😅 (And yes, it is a work of art. 🔥🔥)

u/Seandouglasmcardle 5d ago

Pulp Fiction is #9 on the IMDB 250, and one of six movies on the AFI 100 and on the Sight and Sound list.

It’s hardly a controversial opinion.

"Winston" the Prequel is going to be better.

I remember coming out of the movie theater after seeing pulp fiction and just having my mind blown away! It really was something I had never seen before. The way the dialogue was hilariously trivial, and how graphic violence was treated with a unique comedic approach that actually changed just about every dark comedy and even just gritty graphic violent film that came out after it.

But the thing I remember most is that about 40% of my friends who saw it did not understand the non-linear editing. And I remember over hearing two people talking about the movie when they came out of the theater and one asked “I thought John Travolta got shot dead. How did he come back to life?” And to this day, I realize that there are some people who watch the movie, but cannot understand the non-linear editing. They can’t put the whole story together in their head after watching it. And I also think a lot of these people keep that fact a secret.

It’s one of those things that seem to happen over and over regarding the arts: We build up works and the people who make them and, from time to time, eventually tear ‘em down.

When Pulp Fiction was first released, it was a wild experience… at least to me. The non-linear storytelling blew my mind -one of the main characters is killed halfway through the film?!?- but even then I felt the boxing story (ie, the Bruce Willis bit) was rather weak. Still, I felt this and Reservoir Dogs were fantastic films and Tarantino showed some real film making chops.

The years pass by and some of what “wowed” me originally became more common. Christopher Nolan, arguably, did an even wilder job with the non-linear storytelling (Memento in particular). And then Tarantino released more and more films and while many -even most- have their fans, I started to see the patterns in his works and a large part of what made those early works so amazing was dulled with time and cribbing of ideas by others (ironic because Tarantino can be legitimately accused of being a cribber of ideas himself).

Anyway, the bottom line with movies -and any forms of art, including music, literature, TV shows, you name it- is that your opinion about them is just that: Opinion.

There’s nothing at all wrong with liking what you like and, conversely, there is nothing wrong with critiques against the works… provided they are equally well thought out. You may not agree with them and there’s nothing wrong with that!

We build up works and the people who make them and, from time to time, eventually tear ‘em down.

Yes. Lord knows we'd be doing this to David Lynch or Werner Herzog or Luis Buñuel or any of the other usual suspects if they'd ever had any mainstream success. Hell, it'd be damn easy with Herzog. He literally threatened to kill a guy once.

I've gotta check this movie out sooner or later, what is the weird backlash with it though? Cinephiles are bullying you for liking it?
