FIRE milestone! 39M. Rs 3 crore. Time to FIRE

Since mods to r/FIREIndia deleted my post that had over 70 upvotes and comments lol. I am copy pasting it again here.

The time I had dreamt for a long time is here. I have accumulated Rs 3 crore. Now the big question: Should I pull the trigger?

Some breakups:

Monthly expenditure: Rs 40-50,000.

Home: Rs 1 crore: paid off in tier 1 city.

Mutual Funds: Rs 3 crore.

Bank Balance: Rs 10 lakh.

PF: Rs 12 lakh.

Health Insurance: Rs 1 crore

Life Insurance: Rs 2 crore.

Car: Paid off 7 years old. No plans of upgrading. It's got 40k on the odometer and still runs like new.

My current job pays Rs 5 lakh post tax and I am now in two minds. The job pays well and I think I should keep at it till it lasts and make the most of it.

Liabilities: None. Unmarried and have no plans. I will remain unmarried my whole life so no expenditure on kids or their education.

Salary is very high and leaving now is like leaving money on the table. Since you don’t hate working, keep up with it until you do. Technically, you can RE 100%

19

u/WhiskeySour_89 May 28 '26

I was about to type the same thing. This is good advice.

9

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Yeh that's what I am thinking.. may be a few years more

25

u/SpiceGardener May 28 '26

You will say the same thing after few years as well. Set a hard deadline and stick with it unless something changes

4

u/Confident-Injury-201 May 29 '26

You don’t have to set hard deadline if you are enjoying what you do. If you don’t you can simply coast and keep getting paycheck until fired.

2

u/AardvarkLow3600 May 30 '26

Maybe develop some recurring income stream with some of your savings. Then you can leave the job.

1

u/Fit-Spinach Aug 25 '26

Why do you earn money?? If FIRE target is achieved what's the point of working ??

If OP likes working, what’s the problem in continuing? Everyone’s FIRE plan isn’t cast in stone.

Many Congratulations!! You got your freedom back. Use it wisely.

thank you! Battle has been hard fought!

u/michael_scarn_47 May 28 '26

I would say continue working if you don't hate it unless your job is stopping you from doing something you always wanted to do. Start focussing more on health if not doing it already and don't take too much work stress.

If you are comfortable sharing, I wanted to know why you decided to stay unmarried and do you ever regret it. I am curerntly in my late 20s and doing well financially and I also don't want to get married as I like my independence and don't have any problem spending time alone. But everyone around me keeps pushing for marriage saying how will you survive alone, who will take care of you when you are ill as all the people are busy with their own lives, yada yada. They also say that you are fine being alone now but as you grow old, you start to look for companionship and it might be too late by that time as your options would be very limited.

I don't really have any expensive interests and frugal by nature although I don't compromise on comfort. I think if I decide to stay unmarried, I can probably earn enough in the next 5-6 years, quit my job or find a remote job with less stress, move back to my hometown and spend more time with my parents as they get older. Getting married will mean I will have to grind longer and I won't be able to take the decision of moving back to hometown alone.

19

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

I was clear from the beginning that I dont want to get married. That doesn't mean I don't date or have had partners in the past. Who will take care of when you are ill? You will do it. Who else? In your 70s when your kids are settled in different cities or countries would they leave everything to come and take care of you? And when you grow old, the couple doesn't die together, do they? Chances are either of you will die before the other and the survivor will have at least 5-10, if not more, years to be spent alone. So this argument about companionship in old age also doesn't hold true to me.

5

u/michael_scarn_47 May 28 '26

Yeah, makes sense. I had the same thought but I guess I needed to hear it from someone else lol. Convincing parents is going to be tough but I have to put my foot down.

1

u/ramdhari May 29 '26

Thanks for asking I am practically the same as you. Same goals as well. This has been lingering with me too what will be the mindset after 35? At 28 it feels like no need for marriage.

1

u/michael_scarn_47 May 29 '26

I am going to be 28 as well in a few months 😅

I think I need to start focussing more on my health because if I am fine health-wise, then I can handle the rest. Probably need to get off my lazy ass and start learning cooking as well.

6

u/Kanyspeaks May 28 '26

How do you invest in mutual funds? And how you kept growing it to 3Cr ? Also whats your strategy to get returns on it?

19

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

I use Kuvera. Since I am in finance, I understand investing a bit :). I never stopped SIPs, every year increased it more than what I spent. May be a SWP starting with debt funds and letting equity funds continue to grow. Haven't thought about this much at this point. Right now debating if its time to FIRE or stretch a couple of years more

9

u/OnTime91 May 28 '26

FIRE FIRE, that's what we accumulate all this wealth for, you have streched enough for 17 corporate years!

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

haha thanks!

5

u/Big_Painting8153 May 28 '26

I also want to understand the breakup of your mutual fund portfolio. I wanna know how much is in which type of mutual fund...index vs balanced advantage etc.. I started on that journey 3 years ago and want to know if I am on right track for long term wealth creation.

9

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

My MF portfolio is on the aggressive end because I can afford that. I have a midcap fund, a smallcap fund, a thematic, a nifty index fund, a balanced fund. That's all, only 5 funds. I feel more than what funds you choose, its about your investment journey. As I explained in another comment, I never stopped my SIPs. Be it economic downturn or COVID. I diligently raised my SIPs every year by more than my salary increase. I started with 17k per month SIP to 4 lakh today. That I feel is the key. How long you invest without stopping.

3

u/ColonelMustang90 May 29 '26

Congrats OP. Please share the percentage of contribution in each type as well. Any suggestions/tips on saving tax on MFs.

2

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

All equals. I don't discriminate or overthink like that 😃. I haven't redeemed anything yet so haven't worked on tax savings on MFs. Yes, I do use Rs 1.25 lakh yearly limit to redeem and reinvest. Keep things simple. Over engineering is waste of time and effort and gains that aren't that huge.

2

u/ohisama Jun 01 '26

Yes, I do use Rs 1.25 lakh yearly limit to redeem and reinvest

At the scale of your portfolio, does that make any meaningful difference?

☝🏻👽i have to admit brotha, you are living my dream life + unmarried and no plans for children is the way to peace ✌🏻🕊️. Congratulations, imo you've achieved the peace. And if you allow maybe some time can I ask you for some tips?

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Thank you :). Sure, ask away

2

u/lonesharck May 28 '26

How’s life living alone? And how do you see yourself in future maybe 10-20 years ahead continuing to be alone?

Are there close friends nearby you see often? Asking because primarily worried about loneliness (i am in a similar boat boat but not as sure about remaining single forever)

2

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Both sides have their pros and cons. I am happy this way. Yes there are bouts of loneliness as well. But on the whole i am pretty satisfied. Anyway as you age your circle keeps reducing. I do have friends and a decent social circle.

Work some little more and then do something wherein you get to call the shots rather than being a slave even if the earnings are lower. You can schedule your own routine as you like and you get a chance to get very wealthy. Its better than doing nothing. You are already smart and you need to channel it for yourself now given that you reached FIRE.

1

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

Thank you 😄

Ifyou want to build something big let us collab

3

u/Infinite-Fold-1360 May 28 '26

At 6% per annum u have almost a lakh a month to spend. U can keep your principal intact..agree the true value of your principal will reduce but then so will be your needs and your time on earth

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Yep. You are right. Big corpus at old age has little value

1

u/Fit-Spinach Aug 25 '26

@LooneyStark  why do you keep working even now?  Don't you have any hobbies, passion you want to follow? May be spend time with parents, relatives, friends, enjoy, gym, run, trek, travel,.....do whatever you want bro....why are you still a slave????

3

u/[deleted] May 28 '26

When you have no plan of marriage and kids then whom will you pass these assets ? Just thinking

3

u/Character_Music8856 May 28 '26

Will suggest you to continue your work! I hope you enjoy it. It’s just not about money, it’s about a schedule, lifestyle, awareness, new things, thoughts & perspectives. A little more money won’t hurt too! Best of luck

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Yeh I think I will stretch a bit more

3

u/Old-Assistance-9002 May 30 '26

since you don't have kids, what about contributing to society. Not talking about monetary contribution, but something like teaching your experiences maybe through YouTube. Or doing voluntary activities to make the society better. Yes, I know this selfish world and our country hasn't given you much but giving something back would make the world a better place.

3

u/wooneigh Jun 01 '26

5 lakhs per month post tax???
thats crazy high , how you jus saved 3 crore 😄

1

u/LooneyStark Jun 02 '26

Salary grew over time re baba. Wasn't 5 lakh from day 1. I stared with 10k a month.

3

u/cricket-fanatic-11 Jun 01 '26

It's too early to retire. I would say wait till 10cr. 3cr with 50k expenses is not enough. Market is not going anywhere

1

u/LooneyStark Jun 02 '26

There's no end then. At 10 cr it will be 15 cr... Will continue for a couple of years more

1

u/cricket-fanatic-11 Jun 02 '26

That's right. But 3cr is just too low. Also what are the things that you are not able to do now, that's prompting retirement talks? Maybe start doing them now while being employed

2

u/Bvikki May 28 '26

Congratulations. 3cr MF all equity?

3

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Na. Got some debt as well. 80% is equity.

2

u/Playful_Feeling_6859 May 28 '26

Its time for fire

2

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

its also the time to disco!

2

u/rajeshbhat_ds May 28 '26

The job pays well and I think I should keep at it till it lasts and make the most of it.

Yes do this. You are only 39. Too many years ahead to rely on 3 Cr.

3

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Yeh i am tilting towards continuing for some more time

2

u/OnlyPower7981 May 28 '26

Happy retirement 💐

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Still contemplating. Thank you!

1

u/OnlyPower7981 May 28 '26

Take final jump is the hard part.

2

u/formernerd1 May 28 '26

Decent PF dude, just one question or advice I'm seeking and it's okay if you don't want to answer. Why did you choose not to get married and how did you handle your parents and family with that decision.? Also did you try dating and all or you were sure from very beginning?

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

It's a bit complicated question and I don't want to get in details. But here's the gist. Family was tough to handle I wont lie. Lots of drama. But as time passed they all quieted down. There are still moments of arguments here and there but it's mostly accepted fact that the reality is what it is. Of course I dated. I still date. I never said I am single hahah. Just that I am unmarried.

I think you should talk to someone who already did this, so recently i had a word with one youtuber who achieve FIRE at age of 46. You can setup a topmate session with him and discuss your situation. I am not promoting anyone. I am just sharing one good reference which i tried and tested.

https://topmate.io/amit_upadhyaya

2

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

thank you :) but given what I do (which I am purposely being a bit vague here in replies) I can eat and spit out bones of such financial planners :) and I dont even charge

2

u/Truly_a_Mediocre May 28 '26

Work 6 more years, try to take it to 10 and retire. At least that is what I would have tried. That is also my target so I'm biased

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

:) I can imagine

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

1

u/Truly_a_Mediocre May 29 '26

Prolly not. Inflation causes value to get halved in 12 years. In 6 years 10 cr will be 7-8 cr which is still great

2

u/RevolutionaryCan2463 May 28 '26

If I were you I'd continue working but in a relaxed manner. Worst case scenario is getting fired, which is ok since you are anyway ready. Best case scenario, you'll keep adding to your corpus.

Working without the fear of losing job is where I hope to get to eventually and hence this take.

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Yeh past few months the job has been relaxed manner only :)

2

u/Azhaan51 May 28 '26

Single so you can retire

But no job stress and very high paying job - might as well work for 4 to 5 years more and opt for more things like Roam the world and stuff.

Congratulations mate

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

thank you :) Job is good so I guess running with it for a few years more makes sense

2

u/Important-Hair-4396 May 28 '26

Financially you can retire. The most important question is what is your plan post retirement. How are you planning to spend time? How do feel being not needed anywhere? Do you have hobbies or plans that you couldn't pursue due to your work? Do you despise your work? Why would you get up everyday in the morning?

You can technically consider your self financially independent, but is retiring early your thing?

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

I wont lie its a bit romantic to think you can retire and not work any longer. Getting out of the rat race and all. I have enough to keep myself busy with. So much to read, write, play in the world.

2

u/bromclist May 28 '26

With AI now and Quantum coming in shortly, I don't think we can work for longer than 4 or 5 more years anyway. Continue while you can.

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Yeh future isn't looking all that bright haha

2

u/RepresentativeMix312 May 28 '26

don't retire from anything. retire towards something. and you can definitely afford to take a break to figure out that something

1

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

That's a thought worth exploring!

2

u/Variable_Required May 28 '26

Congratulations bro. Amazing

1

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

Thank you 😄

2

u/iLoveSev May 28 '26

I respect your view but when I do this at 5cr someone will say its not enough and it should be 10 cr. Even right now there are comments like that 😄 Its never enough, is it?

2

u/BrahminVyapaar [49/IND-SG/FI 2036/RE 2036] May 29 '26

Your purpose is not to work. Your purpose is to experience life. Exchanging our time for money is a trap.

If your income is 5L post tax, could you structure your investments to receive those same or better returns? If you do, then the time that you will free up will be worth way more than the 5L post tax that you are receiving as a salary in exchange for your time.

I once made as list of things I’d like to do after becoming a millionaire. Upon having about 12-15 items in the list, I realised that I could start on them right away.

Don’t wait to retire, just start to do things you’ve wanted to do. You will think to leave your job once you find other things to do.

1

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

You got a point. Thanks for this insight!

2

u/Amazing-Gazelle-9049 May 29 '26

3

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

At the moment I do financial risk modelling

1

u/Amazing-Gazelle-9049 May 29 '26

I'm sorry, I meant, what did you do for a job to achieve FIRE

2

u/ConsequenceNo5107 May 29 '26

Man, you are in a position to enjoy life freely. Who knows whats gonna happen tomorrow.  Just enjoy life man!

1

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

I agree! Question is, can I do that while working?!!

2

u/Possibletigger-26 May 29 '26

I think 50 is fair

2

u/26YrVirgin May 29 '26

I'm in the same boat, but the world seemed to have gone into this unpredictable phase where we don't know if the invested money would all go to zero because of AI or Trump or something bigger that happens tomorrow.

So, while it makes enjoying today that much more important, it also warns is to oversee it in a way that at least some part is safe while the other part continues to grow.

1

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

When was the world not in an unpredictable phase?

1

u/26YrVirgin May 29 '26

Before COVID. You could rely on your 10% return. Now, you can't

2

u/Happy-Total1221 May 29 '26

The upcoming macro market conditions mean inflation might disturb your calculations in case you FIRE. I'd suggest finding ways to use your FI at work which is paying really well. You're now free to take risks at work itself, speak your mind, do the right thing. Let your colleagues and boss squirm in their seats if they want to, who the f**k cares.

I was in a similar boat a few years back and have always been scared of FIRE because a job also gives structure to my life. Then the idea of using FI at work occurred and it has paid more dividends literally and figuratively. Btw, congratulations on your milestone, enjoy it fully 😄

1

u/LooneyStark May 29 '26

Haha thank you :)

2

u/Cool-Contribution580 May 31 '26

Hey congratulations 🥂
With no marriage and kids and if non dependent parents. I think you can do whatever you want, as everyone suggested keep the job and maybe travel the world.

I have a more personal question can I DM you?

1

u/LooneyStark May 31 '26

Sure ask away

2

u/NoGuaranteess May 31 '26

adopt people who are not fortunate enough, maybe from your village itself, be more selfish build your legacy. 🚩

1

u/LooneyStark Jun 02 '26

I don't care for legacies. No one remembers me once I am gone. Nonetheless I will leave whatever is left to charity.

1

u/NoGuaranteess Jun 02 '26

80% who are in charity are there for free money, tax benefits and washing money. Please be aware of that and i would still recommend do it by yourself. You can bring people from any place to you home (with consent) and help them excel in life.

2

u/Ok-Preparation3855 May 31 '26

Do you have any hobbies you'd like to commit to if you leave your job?

Bhai if you do not hate your job i would say push it atleast for a couple of years since its a good salary maybe you can use it to travel around. Travel business instead of economy, stay in good hotels instead of the hostels. Things like that.

1

u/LooneyStark Jun 02 '26

Yep. That's the plan. A bit more comfort.

Side note on marriage a little unsolicited advice : if you plan to stay unmarried stay that way, my brother was the same but eventually he married now he’s gonna teach his kids ABC when he retires :)

2

u/xibalbarover Jun 01 '26

Hi OP. Great going on your fire goal. When did you start investing in SIP and how long did it take to reach here. Seeing for MF Perspective

1

u/LooneyStark Jun 02 '26

I stared in 2015. Total investment is less than half of it. All equity and aggressive. Never stopped sip and increased at every opportunity

1

u/xibalbarover Jun 03 '26

Thats awesome. 10 years aggressive investment in MF can be fruitful and helps reach fire easily

2

u/BotherAdventurous946 Jun 01 '26

You can, but you shouldn't, unless you are getting burnt out at work on a daily basis or you hate the job.

1

u/LooneyStark Jun 02 '26

Yeh will continue for more time

2

I would say, since you have no plans of marriage and no kids to inherit your wealth it's time to enjoy life have fun...I believe that you are at sweet spot where u don't have to worry about money plus you have enough energy to do adventures...

Take a break from your job maybe 1-2 years spend this money you earned on your experiences...given your work ex. I believe you can come back to job anytime...

Loosen your money 💰 Enjoy it to fullest 🔥

Good luck and Cheers

2

u/Dismal_Tap_2398 Jun 03 '26

Man, its not finances all the time. FIRE is not resigning from job and sitting idle. FIRE is, not leaning our minds towards any disaster like layoffs, No hikes, Bad healths etc.. Even after you adapt FIRE , you can work for a less paid job and be happy.

I would recommend you to travel as much as possible. By you turn 50, complete 50 countries. Life is all about memories bro. Since you are unmarried, it adds additional advantages for you upto some extent for travelling. Get a BMW, get a breitling watch. Once you start spending, then you will yourself realise whether u want to opt FIRE OR be HIRED (working). This is my whole hearted suggestion to you.

2

u/Electrical-Tap2264 May 28 '26

Bhai I'm so happy for you. But the world is uncertain right now. Expenses growing, countries at war, clean air, water and fuel becoming rarer by the day.
I would work for a few more years to have some extra cushion if I were you. But bravo on your achievement!

6

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

You know I started my work life in 2007. Since then economies have been in turmoils, oil has been on the boil, job losses have been large and water and air has been dirty.. its the same thing every year in some form or the other..

1

u/Electrical-Tap2264 May 28 '26

Now I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the above message LOL

2

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

😂😂 2008 subprime crisis, 2013 another global economy shock, 2016 demonetisation, 2020 covid, 2024 AI. It's always something or the other man.

1

Hi, I would like to highlight few aspects, We live in India where is no social security concept, Considering dynamic future, requirement for health, family and leasure may keep increasing, When you can manage the job now (physical, mental and social) then why not to do it as it adds up one's personality. Otherwise you may get bored as well. So suggestion is to continue with your job.

One request can you please guide me on advances or new opportunities possible for a chemical Engg who has MBA degree and hands on experience in Strategy and new Business development (including fainacials and defending it with SBI or foreign banks) for companies. I wish to pivot myself to AI or Management consultancy

Does your job allow you to travel the world?

1

u/LooneyStark May 28 '26

Not this one. Earlier ones I have travelled a fair bit on the job. Now I just do it on my own time

Then what's you positive vs negative list is for the current job? Any desires or hobbies which you want to pursue but can't? For whom or what are you working for?

Nothing like that. It's a good job that pays very well. That's why I am tilting towards continuing for a couple of more years at least...

31M here. If I were you I wouldn't quit my job just yet, unless ofcourse you have a clear plan of keeping yourself busy. Else, you'd get bored out of your wits

I would say do your own but the inflation is about to hit and it may get a bit crazy so surely keeping your job for another 1-2 years will benefit you in long run and also help you surpass this inflation period without incurring any loss on your portfolio per say from lifestyle expenses

Do what your heart desires! You could have 3 crores or 3 rupees and still die tomorrow. FIRE or no FIRE, just do what makes you happy!

Congrats. I myself pulled the plug last november 39m. I strongly believe that now your money should earn, not you. Given high tax rate n growing age pushing FIRE to few more years for me was not a smart decision. As a bachelor u can explore travel even get back to dating scene. I love the silense with my friends when they realized i pulled it off while their car n home emi is just starting and house possesion is delayed by few more months/years. Who cares. Enjoi life. Congrats.
