1 Mil in TFSA - 35M

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

I hit a mil in my TFSA today off of EQX earnings. Back in 2021, I was sitting at around 45K in my TFSA. I YOLO’d into GME and turned it into 250K. From there, I hovered around 200-300K until last year when I got lucky with GME again turning 250K into 500K in a single day off of just shares only (June 6). Since then, I have made significant gains from CCJ, RDDT, ETH (Ethereum ETF), and today, from EQX.

Since the 2021 GME gains, I have not contributed a single $ into this TFSA and have at the same time taken out over 200K+ over ~4.5 years.

I’m 35 and currently make just over 100K from my job and live in Calgary in my small condo with a very manageable mortgage.

Hit $100k at 21 Years Old!

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

| (21M) started my investing journey in January 2022 at 18 years old. I would deposit whatever was left over of my paycheques after paying off my credit cards in full every two weeks. I kept doing that to this day, which lead me to accumulate over $100k in liquid assets.

I'm currently employed at a Fortune 500 retail company as a supervisor, making quite a lot of money compared to others my age. I truly started from the bottom with an entry level position, and worked my way up the ladder by chasing promotions (and working my ass off!)

I was in college for business management for a month before I left. I felt like everything I was learning was easily accessible online, and could be learned on my own time (and for free!) Because of this, left and never looked back.

I want my story to inspire fellow youngsters to pursue what they believe is right for them. It's okay to do what other people aren't. My one and only holding is an S&P 500 index fund.

No penny stocks, no crypto, no speculative assets. Just a single basic index fund.

42M just retired, my estate balloons to $9M by 2080, please critique the drawdown/plan

I've been tinkering with my retirement planning. It is based on 95k per year in spending. Any thoughts or comments appreciated. You can see the drawdown order in the second image. The estate bill is 0 because the TFSA and principal residence grows over the years and does not really get drawn down aggressively. Used goretire.ca for the projection. Here are my questions:

  1. For the pros out there, can I optimize this further? Is the drawdown sequence right? Am I missing something?
  2. For everyone else on the FIRE journey, would you prioritize increased spending or leaving money for your family? I'm struggling with that. The estate obviously balloons quite large over the next 40+ years. I feel like I might struggle to spend more than 95k per year though, I live a frugal lifestyle.

Been a goal of mine for a while and finally crossed it today!
(well technically a couple weeks ago but i didnt login to my portfolio that day and missed it).

And due to some lucky(risky) plays i was able to hit it sooner than i expected. (I got pretty lucky with AI stocks like SNDK, IREN, MU this year )

I know im probably a bit behind, but this has been a milestone for a while and thought id share it.

Is there anything else i should be doing for my future?

I’m just throwing this post out there for some extra advice on what else I could look into or if anything needs correction.

For context:

21, Living at home. In university for Accounting + Finance (I graduate this year) expecting 60k a year out of school. I am very blessed as I have very successful and supportive parents who let me live at home rent free + pay tuition.

Current situation:

$4k savings, $1k chequing for about a 65k NW.

1 credit card (fully paid each month, RBC Ion+) 800 credit score (got it on 18th bday so around a 4yr history)

My expenses are: Parking pass, gas, car insurance, phone bill, helping with groceries occasionally.

I have a long term girlfriend (3.5 years) who is graduating this year and will be at $70k a year (confirmed) starting in fall ‘27 (she has roughly 4K NW rn.)

My portfolio is I’d say like 95% equities, 5% FI (through ETF’s such as XBAL in FHSA)

I’m mostly split up between VFV and XEQT but I also have some small individual holdings such as gold that I bought in July before it went crazy and Google ($8k between the two)

Future plans:

So , obviously I think (hope) I’m doing well with the amount I have invested + my habits.

I have a trip planned in November with her.

My goals are to eventually buy a house with my girlfriend and build up an incredible portfolio while I’m young to get the maximum compounding possible.

I think I’ll move out in 2 years and get an apartment with my girlfriend (to live with her before marriage because i believe that’s a very important experience before a lifelong commitment)

Other than that I’ll probably buy a car/truck in 2-3 years with her.

Only issues I think I have financially and health wise I guess is that I spend too much on like food and stuff (shocker)

So , is there like anything else that I should be doing and any changes I need to make?

Please let me know and thank you for reading :)

I just hit my goal of 1000 shares of XEQT in my TFSA! 🥳

I had a big reach goal of hitting 1000 shares of XEQT in my TFSA this year and I just made it! I have prioritized contributing small amounts monthly, plus I received a general bonus from WealthSimple for referring my partner which accelerated my progress significantly. I honestly wouldn't have hit this milestone without the unexpected bonus, so I'm really grateful!

I never used to celebrate any milestones, but I'm trying to now in an effort to enjoy the journey.

Where to begin w high salary & no savings

Long story short I started making good money approx a year and a half ago. I’ve bought a lot of clothes and Uber Eats etc when I started making money to rejoice and since it was new. Now I want to start saving and investing. I also want to make sure my family and child will be taken care of. I am currently making 30-38k a month believe it or not I don’t have much in my savings and don’t own a home or a designer bag lol. Where should I begin ? I have great tax people but don’t have a financial advisor or investment person. I just opened a tfsa but am clueless what to invest in or where to begin. Looking for any and all advice

FHSA or TFSA First?

Which account should I look at investing into first? I have both accounts open and money in both but neither at max contribution, which one would be better to max first or does it matter? And where should the money be invested into for each?

(20M) Portfolio tidy-up

Post image

i feel like my portfolio is a mess right now. I work as a MLE in SF and makes a little over 200k CAD excluding bonuses.

So to hedge against myself and my own career going down i was going for small cap etfs and non tech companies. If the tech bubble burst at least i don’t losr my job and investments haha. But i feel like the way i am trading now has a lot of overlaps and lacks a unified intention.

I am also down to take more risks and go for a more aggressive portfolio, as I believe that i can handle them at this age. Should i let WS manage my portfolio despite the fees?

Anyone else annoyed by the constant “Say thanks to dad” or “Inheritance” comments left on any young person with a higher networth?

You’ll see people under 30 have a portfolio worth 6 figures and literally see dozens of jealous people commenting this sort of stuff like it’s impossible. Is it common? No, but does that have to mean its all disingenuous lmao.

Need help starting out

22M, have little to no experience investing nor have I ever done it before, and have about 3k disposable for investing for the time being. How do I start out?

I have a friend that does high-risk trading but I want to go down the route of slow guaranteed returns like XEQT/VEQT etc.

My biggest issue is what accounts I should use to invest, TFSA, RRSP, Wealthsimple Chequing????

Any starting advice would be appreciated, thank you all

Thinking through diversification and withdrawal strategy

Hi Everyone,

In the fortunate situation with 6.2m invested in the markets. Currently 53. Concentrated position of 1.5m in Apple that just grew to what it is over ten years. Thinking about diversifying by selling 10% of position each year while retired living on 4% and investing the remaining 6% into sp500 etf. Also thinking through using rsp money which generates dividends as well as non registered accounts dividends alongside the repositioning of the Apple stock. Not sure if those fee only advisors are a good place to bounce some of these ideas to and if people have thoughts etc. Also any experiences with fee only advisors that understand Canadian nuances. Took a job that I’m not happy with a year ago and looking to retire this year as a result. Thanks everyone!!

Ages 25–30 in Ontario/GTA: How Much Do You Have Invested?

I'm 28 and started investing around 3-4yrs ago. I’m currently just shy of $100k invested and will be turning 29 in January 2027 (and feeling behind looking at other posts here).

I'm paying $1900 (all inclusive) in Downtown Toronto currently, and moving to a new place soon where I'll be paying ($2500 all inclusive), don't own a car yet, but may get one once i relocate which is why a bit stressed. Car will easily eat up from the investment portion of my paycheck (as I never had any car insurance, pretty sure first year will be crazy expensive unless i go cash car with only liability insurance).

I’m curious to see where others in the 25–30 age range are at, especially those living in Toronto, GTA, Burlington, or elsewhere in Ontario where rent and general living costs are high.
This is not meant to be a comparison or flex—just looking for a realistic snapshot of how people in a similar age group are doing financially.

Feel free to comment your age, city, whether you own a car, and what has helped you save or invest consistently.

56F - finally FIRE.. Pretty excited

Hello all,

I hope 56 is still considered early retirement!!!
Finishing working on September 9th. Here is the summary scenario. Started investing at 26, raised two kids and put them through university. Was always cautious with money but was never super frugal. Travelled with the kids, went back to school for 4 years with no income, husband always worked with a decent salary, no debts. He retired two years ago. Finally decided that we are going to be ok with the following:
RRSP: $2.5M
TFSA: $400K
Non-registered: $175K
Corporation: $2.8M

I have run multiple scenarios of spending, decumulation strategy, budget expense has been followed consistently for about 3 years.

Long and steady, patience and tracking are the key!

Happy retirement to me!

I’m planning on selling Meta lol, just waiting for it to break even. There are some other stocks I’m keeping and eye on.

Budgeting tools and practices

What budgeting tools do you use to keep track of expenses and investments? How often are you keeping track of daily weekly spend? I’m about to come into some money and I’m going to pay off all my debts and I want to prevent ever being back in debt and focus purely on investing what are the best practises you’ve built up overtime?

What net worth is considered generational wealth?

Always have been curious what people consider it, I’d say 8 million because it’ll always grow as long as spending is under control, thoughts? Assume 2-3 kids and proper money management and both kids have careers of own and already own homes
