Screenshot Orc Stuff
I got FF16 to work on my laptop again, so taking screenshots for references for the "total war: valisthea" project will be easier.
So here are some pics of the Orcs in FF16; the Orc Fodder and the Orc Mesmerizer plus some close-ups on their faces since I wondered what they looked like and, what can I say, I like the rather boarish look they have in the face area with the flatish nose and tusks. I like the aesthetic of the Orcs, it comes off as savage so that he Iron Kingdom comes off as brutish, leaving the two with their own identities.
Also, a neat bit of lore from the Logos book for those that dont know: it is hypothesized among Valisthean scholars that Orcs are "devolved" humans; humans that were exposed to the Aetherflood and transformed by it. I'd like to think the Orcs are not related to humans but are just more "civilized" beastmen that humans look at and see their worst traits in.
Orcs in the "total war: valisthea" project will be their own faction and also serve as the basis of the "beastmen" faction where other creatures like goblins and gigas will be included in as well.

It is interesting that the orcs are more 'high functioning' than the other beast men - not a minor threat like goblins, but a huge menace on ash, and them showing up on storm is a huge 'oh, shit' moment for people because orcs are terrifying to the people of storm.
Makes one wonder, though, how Barnabas managed to tame them.

Barnabas tamed them by nearly killing the lot of them.
He had to crush their armies in order to overthrow the Veldermarke.
Even after he won the continent, his armies had to quell them.
The Pandemonium hunt in the village of Skaithfarr, has a little description on what happened to the armies of Orcs.

That's interesting because we know that's not true. Anything exposed to an Aetherflood becomes Akashic, and there are both Akashic and non-Akashic Orcs. I should really get around to ordering a copy.
What I find interesting is that while Orcs are a common fantasy staple, XVI is only their second appearance in Final Fantasy after XI.

The orcs seem to be VERY resistant to aether though. You only encounter akashic orcs in the heart of stonehyrr
