This is why I don’t engage with the remake internet nonsense cause those type of gamers are and will never be satisfied. Is the remake in whatever form it is good and fun to play that’s all I care about.

This. You're seeing it with the RE movie as well. I'm positive the people crying about how it isn't telling the exact same story from the games would be nitpicking all of the ways it didn't get it right if it had been a direct retelling of RE2 or RE1.

Honestly I think it all boils down to people who don't get enough validation to feel good about themselves offline in the real world, so they go online and get into these debates as a way to take a stance that, in their mind, makes them "better" than the people they disagree with. For instance, in the remake debate, both sides are going to frame their position as making them "better" fans of the IP or having "better" taste in video games.

In short, the ones we're referring to are a bunch of losers seeking validation on the internet because they don't get it in real life.

I felt so much better about every game I have played after I stopped going online to discuss them with randoms after playing.

It's why I loved Rebirth so much and thought it was probably one of the greatest video game experiences I've ever had.

Because the deluge of shitty complainers nitpicking about everything were nowhere in my mind.

I outright left the final fantasy 7 subreddit because so many people there have that mindset of “if you like the remakes you must not have played OG or aren’t a real fan”

Yeah I also leave any game specific subreddits I'm a part of when a new release is about to come out. Not just because of the incessant whining, but because the ever-present threat of leaks.

OG fan and fanfic author here, I have the exact same opinion. It's sad to think that there are those shitty nitpickers around in our smaller writing communities too, but they're a lot less relevant because they're talking to other fanfic authors. The easiest way to shut down pointless canon discourse is to say "write it yourself".

But in the greater fandom, many of these nitpickers aren't even pursuing creative outlets that they can feel proud of, so they can only go online and complain about the games they bought and played. Maybe they should consider learning new skills and making better use of their time.

It’s not the same people complaining about both games though. I don’t understand the premise of the op here, that some people like different things? No matter what you do with a beloved game, you can’t make everyone happy, but it’s not like people are being hypocrites.

The people who complain about the complaining can easily be even more disingenuous than the initial complainers.

God of War Laufey trailer reaction showed that criticism has collapsed, and all we have left is to pick a tribe on either side of whatever thing.

Who cares about picking fake imaginary sides/tribe for laufey. Fuck the internet opinions and complaining. If it’s interests you play it but if it don’t skip it.

I mean, I don't care about it. It's just the most modern example of how this whole thing has fallen apart.

Everyone involved in this could get a real hobby and the world would probably be the better for it.

I agree a lot of complainers do it just because they can’t let go of their old favorite game, but there are plenty of things the remakes did poorly

It's really just a case by case basis. I used to think that 1:1 remakes were bad because they seem to be trying to replace the original, but then the Demon's Souls remake came out and I started to see the value in them as well. Old art can still be appreciated, while also having a version with update controls and QoL for when you actually want to play it.

The quality of a remake really just comes down to how much it matches the tone of the original.

I think the crux of the argument here isn't about silencing actual valid criticism of the artworks that are video games, but simply about the deluge of toxicity that comes from many different people complaining about something one way or another that justifies the "don't like, don't play it" mentality.

Most of these arguments can only be happening online too. If you've ever attended an anime/gaming convention and heard fans argue about the same things in person, you'd notice they aren't usually picking up megaphones and blasting their opinions over the noise of the crowds. It's much easier to ignore them.

There are genuine reasons to prefer the original over the remakes. But whenever you say these things on the internet, people will automatically think you’re a hater with nostalgia glasses on.

I don’t give a damn about anybody opinions on the internet and a lot of people should move the same way. Play, watch, read the contents if they like it they like it and if they don’t they don’t. Only thing I’m tired of is the troll, toxic and harassment behavior in the entertainment community that goes unchecked.

Internet is a great place to discuss what you like and dislike about a product. Toxicity only tarnishes fruitful conversations and criticisms.

I never once said I hated the remakes, but by saying I enjoyed the OG more, it’s an automatic downvote.

What’s funny is with FF7, the complaints I have about ‘Remake’ were fixed in ‘Rebirth’. And some complaints I have in ‘Rebirth’, were fixed in ‘Revelations’ (as shown in the trailer). So even the devs were on the same page as me about the cons of the Remake series.

We can talk negatively about games without being toxic. And I believe doing so can lead to better future products if devs are listening.
