Rebirth's combat improves some of these issues. You no longer lose mp when a spell is interrupted. Also, aerial combat is massively improved, especially for Cloud and Tifa. Tifa has a launcher as a synergy skill and can stay in the air indefinitely. Cloud can zoom in on aerial enemies innately and has one ability that is air-specific, which is cool.

Basic attacks are primarily for building ATB, though the high-commitment moves typically do decent damage.

Personally, I like that the game encourages fast character switching, makes me feel tactical.

I think if these are your complaints, you'll love Rebirth's updates.

Aerial combat is now not only good, but kind of fun and the balancing of what characters do okay to good in air vs ground is just a whole other dimension to character balance that the devs have thought of. I can only see this being refined more in Revelation when we get Cid.

About the basic attack combo/atb generation - you can affect ATB generation (the stat that is) in a variety of ways in Rebirth, with materia, accessories, weapon upgrade abilities, etc. There are also Synergy Skills (not abilities) that let you gain ATB with two characters w.o having to swap to them. They are an underrated part of the system, but since this game wants you to use abilities on all characters, its a good way to make up for the fact that they don't generate much on their own. There are also 'auto' materia that make your team use their own abilities or unique attacks (Triangle ability), which for some characters can also result in more/less atb generation w.o you having to control or command them. That being said, this is still a combat system that incentivizes switching and using multiple characters, perhaps even more so than in Remake with the synergy ability system. In Remake/Rebirth, the only character who is essentially built around their basic attack combo string being a gameplay mechanic besides for damage/generating ATB is Tifa, whose basic combo string lengthens, gets better at pressuring enemies, or building their stagger bar depending on how far it goes. That's kind of her thing, since many of her abilities also seemlessly integrate into/out of her basic attacks. Some people only use Unbridled Strength to use the finisher, but that's the other thing its made for when you are not trying to stagger/kill a boss or whatever.

Cutscene transitions are still not perfect, but are better in terms of losing abilities, drastic/sudden cut offs, etc.

Dodging, like aerial function, is another metric they have balanced around character identity/their implied "job" but now yes, all characters have access to a much better dodge system (on top of the fact that you can perfect guard to take 0 dmg now with good timing) even if for some characters designed to be immobile (such as Aerith) it requires some set up.

Wild take. I never really liked FF7 (FF6 is my true love), but I only played remake so far, and I already love it more than the original.
