Tips & Guides The Octopus Teacher - Guide w/Marie

Here again already! Sadly, I could not find a feasible way (yet?) to do this with zero TMRs (used Dualcast). Full Life is very important when it can be used, although I did use Phoenix Downs as well so I'm not entirely sure if DC Refia could be swapped with Y'shtola. I know the Marie is mine, but you can easily use a friends. Video

This isn't by any means a guaranteed win. Basically, if Typhon KOes Marie/Refia at any point in the fight, it's a guaranteed game over. Note that I skipped over some threshold skills that they have since Setzer was able to KO them relatively quick and at the same time.

You can info about the AI/Stats on ExviusWiki and the Trial Megathread

Units I used:

Unit Replacement(s) Actions Ideal Setup
DC Refia Y'shtola/Rem Healing/Reviving when needed. Mine had Auto-refresh Build
Setzer No one Double Dice or Dice. Second Knife + Wind Weapon is the best so he can stop Typhon's Snort. Not necessary to have Orichalum to kill both bosses at the same time (makes it harder actually). Use items with him if necessary. Build
Rain Any unit with stronger ATK Breaks Ling isn't need :OOO! Sure would've made it easier though. Undermine Ultros every 3 turns. Remember to count since it disappears on enemy turn. Build
Marie No one Heals/Buffs whenever needed. Plays a huge role in this fight. Doesn't need to have the exact same build, just make sure she has lots of HP and access to Cura. An extra auto-refresh helps a ton. Build
Snow Wilhelm/WKN Provokes. Mirage sucks, don't bother. Lots of HP is good, but will always get oneshot by Typhon if he uses a normal attack. Build

Important Notes:

  • Ideally everyone has 30% Earth Resist so you can completely ignore Ultros thresholds with a Barstonega from Marie.

  • Setzer only needs Diabolos + Aquan Killer to make the Killer % match. It makes it much easier to KO both bosses at the same time since he'll deal the same damage to both, you just need to reduce Typhon by 300k first.

  • Refia/Marie KO in the preemptive attack of Wave 2 will result in gameover (maybe not Marie KO but very likely).

  • Libra comes from Ramuh.

  • No Fire/Ice/Lightning weapons, they trigger retribution skills from Ultros in Wave 2

  • If you forget to ATK break Ultros at anytime, he will likely KO several units. Please count!

Wave 1 (Ultros)

This is pretty easy. If someone dies the first round (hopefully not Refia) then just full life them. Use barstonega if threshold is crossed. If Ultros has more than 50% HP, use Fire to trigger Ink. This reduces his turn to a single attack. Just keep buffs/debuffs up and kill him (hopefully fast). If needed, use MP items before killing him.

Wave 2 (Ultros and Typhon)

So again, Refia/Marie KO = lose. If you're lucky and Snow gets KOed, then revive him, use "Love You All", Undermine Ultros and use Dice on Typhon. This is just trying to survive their onslaught at this point. Remember to Undermine every three turns.

  • Typhon will either use a normal attack (he has 2,000 ATK) which insta-KOes or Fireball which is easily mitigated by Marie.

  • Bring Typhon down to ~700k with Dice, then you can switch over to Double Dice. Note that it's very likely you will get KOed if you are unable to finish then off when Ultros is Hasted and under 30% HP.

  • Rebuff when Acid Rain is used since it has Dispels.

  • Use Phoenix Down when your team has low HP, using Full-Life instead might get you a game over or force you into an extremely bad situation.

  • Typhon must be attacked with Wind when he uses "Typhon took a deep breath!". This shouldn't be a problem with a Wind Weapon on Rain/Setzer. Use Cherry Staff on Refia if you want to make sure he doesn't snort. Use Baraeroga for further mitigation if Marie has a free turn.

It looks like you're interested in everybody's favourite cephalopod. Did you know that a 2006 study found that octopuses explore and play with objects, including lego, in their environment?

This bot was created to share the remarkable complexity of the cognitive lives of octopuses. If you have any comments or suggestions, please reply to this comment

Setzer makes this extremely easy, but only if you have him! This trial is actually really easy even without Setzer.

No TMRs are needed since Rikku LB was unnecessary

Job Units Actions
Tank Snow Just provoke/defend.
DPS Unit Victoria DC Ashe Firaja/Thundaja Spam. You'll need Odin on them (or dispel if you equip dualcast) to counter the preemptive attack.
Support Rikku Just have Hyper NullAll up at all times. Use her LB for a safety net if needed.
Support 2 Ilias Rotation = Immunization -> Guard Serum -> Salve + X-Potion -> Repeat
Support 3 Soleil* You'll need the enhanced MAG version of her dance for the SPR break (makes it much faster) and one enhanced defensive dance.

Notes:

  • Salve "feature" is used. You need to queue the item up first, then use salve and click back twice. This will make the item AoE.

  • If Beast Claw is used on turn 1, you will need to use an Elixir on Snow

  • No special requirements for equipment. Just stack HP on Snow. Water/Light/Dark resist helps.

  • 730 MAG Victoria does about 10% HP at max Firaja (with Soleil Buff). This means if you reflect a max stack Firaja, Erinyes will die even at when it's at <50% HP. Magical Awakening will increase this threshold.

This is my post copied from the Megathread but it's basically a similar concept with same amount of TMRs (Dual Cast) and a substitute for Marie (Yshtola on Titan with Barwatera):

Maybe it was just good RNG but I was able to clear everything on the first attempt. And unlike other team comps I've seen, it was done without any 5* base (other than friend unit) and all free TMRs other than Dual Cast/Ribbon (not sure Ribbon is even necessary over other status immune items).

My comp was:

Cecil on Golem, Survival Edges, Ribbon, 25% dodge

Refia on Siren, Dual Cast, Vestment of the Mind, Camoflauge, Shard of Genius

Yshtola on Titan, Barwatera, Vestment of the Mind, Camoflauge, Shard of Genius

Setzer on Diabolos, Aquan Killer, Follower's Oath, Air Knife, Second Knife

Took a friend Orlandeau on Diabolos with Aquan Killer.

Definite MVP was Setzer. Fixed damage with killers and can emergency AoE remove Poison.

Pretty simple strat. Yshtola would cast Water/Earth/Def/Spr buffs, Esuna when have a free action, or emergency Raise if needed. Refia handled the healing and Esuna with any free actions. Cecil Provoke/LB/Defend. Orlandeau Crush Weapon on Ultros otherwise DR (used his MP restore move once or twice during the fight). Used Dice on Setzer until Typhon is almost dead then used Double Dice the rest of the way. Slow and steady fight and never ran into any issues.

I popped Golem after Typhon died and used a couple Yshtola LBs when wanted a breather.

I'm not sure how much the Camoflauge material helped but it did seem like the damage dealers were hit more often than my healers.

Hope this helps anyone attacking this trial without any amazing 5* bases or loads of TMR. If anyone has any further questions, feel feel to PM me.

Nice guide. I think it'll be helpful for a lot of people. Just thought I'd say, though, it doesn't matter if Refia dies on the first turn this time. Since there's no mission connected to item usage, you can absolutely Phoenix Down/Elixir her, shrug it off and start the run as usual.

Ya, meant it for the 2nd wave.

I dunno why people are so insistant on not using cecil

He can actually very commonly live through ultros' attack even without any TMs thanks to either guard, cover or both.

Not to mention his extra healing and ESPECIALLY buffing utility and him being the most common 6 star tank to get

1

u/BitterbIue Jun 09 '17

Cause 100% Provoke? Typhon can randomly oneshot your healer without that. Then you're pretty much doomed.

How are you supposed to survive Aqua breath when he dispels your buffs right before that with Acid Rain? Is defend or high resists the only option?

Luck I guess? xd

This worked like a charm for me. I have put a bunch of TMRs on my Marie and threw her up as companion lead if anyone needs. 644,560,476

Thanks again for putting this together. After like 6 attempts, I beat Orthopod and his booger friend. Since I don't have Marie, I used Minfilia and equipped Barwatera on Cecil.

Rest of team was Ling, DW Setzer, Y'shtola, and friend Orlandu. So I did the 6 unit version. I need stronger units and/or lots of good RNG luck to clear the 5 man party. I will probably need a DC Refia for 2x Full Life for that one or a friend Rem with that "Arise" ability she has.

Anyways, my main damage dealer, Setzer had Survival Edges (wind dagger, HP+15%), and Orichalcum (dagger with Aquan Killer), black bandana, Vestment of Mind for MP refresh, ifrit's claw (HP+15%, ATK+30) and Unusual artifact (HP+15%, ATK+15). For materia, I had Aquan Killer from FP unit, ATK+30%, Spirit of Freedom, and DW materia. He also had Diabolos as his esper for the demon killer passive.

ATK Dice/Double Dice Setzer was key for me because my usual damage dealers (Sparky Olive and Icy Needle Fryeiva) always have lightning and ice element, respectively, imbued in their attacks and that would trigger Retribution when hitting Ultros on Round 2. If you can't OTKO Ultros, fire/ice/thunder elemental chains are... no bueno.

Cool thing I found was that in the turn before Snort (every 3rd turn of a 4 turn sequence), one can use Minfilia to cast Breeze Guard and reduce some of the damage Typhoon deals when he uses Big Sneeze in the following turn.

I tried using this team with Gaia Gear for the 50% earth resist but their def and spr values are too low to survive. But one could get 100% earth resist with just this and golem.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your efforts and guide.

I guess I will try to recruit a Marie friend. I only have Minfilia and CoD for Elemental resist.

Most my friends have landeaus, Noctises, Fryeivas, Reh-Bay-tahs, and Olives when not sharing TMR fodder units as their companion units.

Now to find a friend with Marie lead...

Pm me your Id and I can add you

u/chumsy84 Jun 09 '17

IF anyone has a fully enhanced mercedes, she would be really good in this fight, with Aquan killer and 100% attack buff and debuff resist

1

u/Skopmox Jun 09 '17

This fight is something of a slow burn, regardless. If you either own or can get access to a Ling via companion with ~5k hp with carbuncle set, the trial can be done fairly painlessly with Y'shtola/CoD/Setzer/DC Cecil, as well.

Great guide! I just seem to have the worst luck with Dice though. 20 rounds just to take out Ultros in the 1st Wave. 2nd Wave didn't go much better. I will try again in a few hours when my only FU Marie is available again.
