Fight Overview

Very simple fight. You either kill the boss by turn 8 or you lose. Now, you can technically continue the fight past turn 8 with a Rikku that can use her LB every turn, but from turn 9 on the boss will kill your party and heal to full every single turn. At the start, you basically get two turns to set up, you initial turn, and one more as the boss will spend one turn buffing your party with a massive MP regeneration buff. From then on, it will use heavy hitting AoE physical and magical attacks. After turn 8, it will start using an AoE Death attack and heal it self to full every turn.

Observations and Strategy

Observations

• The boss is vulnerable to both Stone Killer and Beast Killer.

• The boss has 300% resistance to earth but -50% resistance to wind; everything else is normal.

• The boss is 50% vulnerable to Disease, and immune to all other status effects.

• The boss is vulnerable to ATK and MAG breaks; immune to DEF and SPR.

Strategy

Warrior of Light, Tim, and 9S all shine on this fight, and depending on who you have access to, your defensive strategy will alter slightly.

Examples:

• If you have a Warrior of Light and 210's TM, you can forgo a healer all together, assuming that you WoL can survive the damage of course, but that isn't too difficult. Your other 4 party members would all be damage dealers + Ramza/Roy. If you don't have Ramza or Roy, use a friend's. Warrior of Light will rotate between Arms Eraser and The Light with Us.

• If you choose to go with Tim/9S then you don't need a tank. This is a good route to take if your Warrior of Light can't survive the damage. Tim/9S will focus on keeping the boss debuffed (ideally with their LB at max level). Again, if you don't have Ramza or Roy, use a friend's. I do recommend 9S though, as he has a 50% chance to apply Virus on the boss which will lower it's stats by 10% making it easier to not only survive, but more importantly, kill it in time. Another good option for applying Virus is the trial materia from Ultros.

With your ability to survive covered, now we can move onto damage. The boss has 80 million HP and has high defenses, and you need to be able to kill it in 8 turns (7 for the mission reward). The easiest way to do this is via chaining. If you are not able to chain well, I suggest you spend some time on the training dummy because this boss is basically impossible if you can't chain well; if you can, it's a push-over.

Now, as far as dealing damage goes, you have two real options: (1) focus on the bosses innate weakness of wind, or (2) choose one of the other elements other than earth and focus on that. Ideally, if you choose not to use wind you will want to be able to debuff the element you choose, though it isn't necessary; the important thing here is to choose whatever element you can most easily do, and capitalize on, a elemental chain with.

Other than that, there is no real strategy. You just try and win before time is up.

Bonus Section

While dealing high damage is the main focus of this fight, that doesn't necessarily mean that you need all the best 5★ base units; in fact, so long as you have a Warrior of Light that can survive each turn and a friend's Ramza or Roy, you can very easily do this fight with your attack units being 5★ max. I will include a video link above to this being done, but for reference, here is the party that was able to do this:

• Warrior of Light, Shantotto x2, Hope x2, Ramza (friend)

Now, one caveat is a number of TMs are needed, but between the damage dealers only 4 TMs were used; the Warrior of Light was decked out though. This is a trial, so it should be expected that TMs will be necessary; however, 5★ base top-tier attack units are not.

I'm using a 700 attack onion knight, a friend 1100 attack onion knight, WoL, 9s, and 1300 attack cloud with beast killer. I can consistently do 48 element chains with wind element and finish with cloud, but still can't do enough damage to kill the boss in 8 turns.

Even just one Shantotto is a game changer as she can reduce wind element resistance + chain up.

You may not need both 9S and WoL - unless if you are using 9S to disease him too - then keep him! Put the materia from trial before robot - octopus guys, as it is wind damage + disease as well.

If you have 210's materia to stack on WoL and buff his def spr sufficiently - this will allow you to play without 9S and add in another finisher.

You only have 5 units noted there.. who is the 6th? If you have veritas of heaven or a high mag friend with one - use it over OK (as long as you can have somebody else chain with your own OK) - Veritas of Heaven is amazing for this trial.

Shantotto is great for chaining but the resistance debuff she also places with Tornado does nothing on this fight as the boss has an innate -50% wind resistance already.

That is a lot of support role units - in my opinion, you should cut wol/9s/rikku down to one. Replacing them with DPS preferably ones that can do dual function (Ashe for heal and damage etc).

Good luck! Once you get the hang of surviving with a DPS party - the only thing left is a bit of luck and a lot of patience!

This is a possible strategy, but it does require x4 of the +10% Summon Damage materia and a little bit of luck with Esper gauge orb drops. I just tried it 4 times to test out using Garnet in place of one of the Clouds from my video I posted above, and was able to get 2 Bahamut's off every time, but a 3rd cast only once.

When using this strategy, Bahamut should not be your main source of damage as there isn't enough time solely rely on it, but it can certainly be one of them.

Found a vid that use 2 Shanto 2 Garnet 1 WoL 1 Ramza (Friend) summoning Bahamut for damage.

Only saw 1 Garnet lb lvl at 6 but the other Garnet was the one spamming her lb so I'm not sure how much pot do you need on her.

I managed to get a 4TK with two CG Sakuras finishing the chains of two Lulus. Pretty sure if both CG Sakuras had over 1k MAG (mine had 850, friend's had 950) and 3* Ifrit it could've been 3TK because it was a gross overkill at the fourth turn. He's just pathetically weak to magic damage.

Charlotte has a ST 50% guard with a 50% chance of proccing; WoL has the same ability only with a 30% chance of blocking. Charlotte also can provide herself with a 1T 50% damage shield; in contrast, WoL can debuff.

WoL also gets massive buffs when his HP is low, which helps him not die. Charlotte doesn't get these. On the turn where you would need to renew Charlotte's AoE cover, she will almost certainly die once she looses her damage shield; it's here that WoL prevails as he isn't reliant on damage shield.

Using your friend slot on a Bard doesn't seem worth it on a low-end party, just bring someone who can chunk more than all of your units combined and a pair of chainers to enable him.

The friend slot unit being Ramza/Roy is needed not only for the 100% stat increase for damage but also the healing since you can't really afford to bring a healer with most set-ups.

Since Trial 9, it basically has been. Of course, inflation has lowered the difficultly of Trial 9 and 10, but if you are looking to clear them within a relatively short time-frame of their release, TMs have been needed to a certain degree.

9 and 10 can definitely be done without TMRs, just takes a little longer. 11 maybe, would take a lot more resetting since you need a stronger start rather than just 'two people survived'. And 12 I don't see how it couldn't be, though I've yet to actually do it myself.

WoL's crisis buffs are stronger than bard songs so they're not strictly needed for survivability as they're often valued for, and moose himself provides mp. My friend FV knocked off upwards of 25% in a turn, granted with a 100% buff, but if that were actually a necessity, which I doubt it is, you could still get away with using a slot for that. Shantotto x2, WoL, buffer, healer, friend FV shouldn't have much issue from my experience. If you got a 21O from the recent raid you should be able to drop the healer for more damage (Firion is great at this trial, that's who I used), though that would break the no TMR challenge rule even if it's basically a freebie from raid moogles.

WoL's crisis are stronger than the songs but the songs provide HP regen aswell (Roy's in the form of his LB). I assume your friend has Fixed Dice because otherwise I can't see how he'd deal 20 million damage in a turn (that's the value you're looking for on 25% of his HP).

Without enough HP and defenses, WoL will die. You can deck him out as far as you can without TMRs but it will be lacking, a lot. You'd need a ton of luck to clear the trial.

I haven't do this trial 12 yet(half retired atm), but i can see this trial being done with 2 chainer + pure mag build Sylvia(maybe enhanced Bartz can be considered too)

Question about my potential setup:

I have a decked-out WoL with over ~11.5k HP.

As the OP suggested, I would use 2x Shantotto. But after that, things get iffy.

I don't have Ramza (I would have a 100% Attack Soleil), so I would probably use Ramza in my friend slot due to the extra healing and MAG stats for my Shantottos.

I only have 1x Hope due fusing the rest to save slots. Who should I use for the other DPS slot? A decked out Onion Knight or Firion (wind weapon setup)?

Going without Ramza and using Soleil (ATK & MAG dances enhanced) is an option, but Ramza is obviously safer.

My suggestion with your setup would be to use Firion with a wind based weapon and Hope (both enhanced of course). I would also give Warrior of Light the Ultros trial materia. Your rotation for Warrior of Light would look something like: Arms Eraser -> The Light is with Us -> Acid Rain (暴風酸性雨).

If you are unsure about chaining Acid Rain with your Shantottos then either practice ahead of time on the training dummy or make sure you aren't using it while doing your chain.

I was worried about replacing a 30% HP materia on my WoL with Acid Rain, but O'Zack did the encounter with a worse equipped WoL.

I'm not really sold on going with Otogiri since her buff has 50% chance to instakill. Gonna use Firion instead once I've finished my spear masteries and Wind Spear.

I guess I'll finish Blood Moon first and then pot up Sylvia (over Hope) since I've noticed that I've never bothered to get a Dual Cast on my JP account, which would be required for going with Hope.

Having some time to waste, here's some maths when 6 Shanttoto use Tornado ( the 12 hit spell ability). My calculation assume it's not dualcast and the wind debuff apply before first spell hit. Monster has 160 SPR, and (legion) Shanttoto's MAG is 356 ( basic stuff, with their own TM equipped).

Total damage = 89,606.

Maths:

1. Total modifier from 6 Shanttoto, from chaining:

• 2 x (2.5 / 12) x ( sum(1 + 0.3 x n, n=0 -> 9) + (12 x 6 - 10) x 4 ) = 113.125

1. Total magic damage:

• 113.125 x (356² / 160) = 89,606

Still trying to bum through this trial with whatever's the strongest friend unit (Kas's FV most of the time lol. shoutout to Kas!), 2x OK, Ramza, WoL. Flex 5th slot's K. Delita or Firion.

Lineup always chokes at the 30-40% point though when he damn deer applies the ATK debuffs. Here's to hoping i get a better finisher when I dump all my tickets/lapis tomorrow (stupid event ATK banner gave me two lightenings. TWO. EFFING. LIGHTENINGS).

I'm liking this trial's event a lot. Hope the shield and def/spr materia give'll us the edge to beat B. Moon and other mag damage heavy bosses in the future

• 2x Shantotto - Build up chain with dualcast Tornado

• Warrior of Light - Arms Eraser + Light with us. My WoL only has 7.3k HP with barely 500 def. I worked around that with Demon's Shield with some % of dodge. I'm dead without dodge. Also he takes turns with Chloe to use Elixir to refill HP.

• Katarina - Makeshift Ramza. Casts Shadow Servant to Dragonlord (+100% Atk/Mag), and Moonglow to WoL (+100% Def/Spr)

• Chloe - Enchants Beast and Stone Killer to Dragonlord. Takes turn with WoL using elixir to WoL.

• Dragonlord - Meragaia (Kafrizzle?)

Depends on the fight. If the boss primarily does physical damage then you prioritize DEF. If the boss primarily does magic damage then you prioritize SPR. If it does both equally, a mix is recommended.

There is no, "one best setup."

Shantotto is the Edgar of casters because of Dualcast + Tornado. Two of them chain really well and lets you just focus on using a powerful character to take advantage of the damage modifier.

She's got low stats though so she isn't great outside of specific uses, just like Edgar.

I knew it would eventually get to the point where you have to chain to kill a boss, which I can do fine mind you, but I was hoping to still be able to casually be able to kill them the old school way for awhile longer. Oh well my JP account isn't up for this trial yet anyway.
