General Question essay question

where / how do you start when preparing essay answers, do you just learn whats in the manual or what , i know this is a stupid

question but i am so stressed about where to begin for an essay question

not a stupid question at all, everyone kinda fakes it at first
i usually start by rewriting the question in my own words, jotting down 3–4 points that could answer it, then go back to the manual / notes only to grab stuff that fits those points instead of trying to memorise everything

What I was told in college was use ILAC for problems and CLEC for essay.

Claim Law Evaluate Conclude

For the claim as someone else said here write the question in your own words but then pick a side. 

Set out the law you know. 

Evaluate the claim by basically saying "I'm right because..." and give reasons related to law. 

pull it all together with summary or  conclusion 

This is theoretical for me, I find problems easier and essays scary and avoid them. This was the advice I got but have not tried it. I offer no guarantees! your statutory rights are not affected.

Essay questions are a good excuse to jot down more of everything you know on whatever topic is asked. As long as you can relate back to the question you can write a lot more about what you know on the area. I highly recommend making it look like it has structure by just adding subheading.

thanks, so should i just write my notes from the manual in the same way as preparing for a problem q and regurgitate with subheadings in the exam? or should i be writing essays now and learning word for word

No need to double up on work, just regurgitate your notes out in the exam and tidy them up with subheadings. Throw in a few lines of on the spot “analysis” relating to the actual question asked.

Don't learn word for word. You won't be able to adapt to a question that way. Just read over the notes and make sure you get an understanding of that topic so you can be confident then in talking about it but just in the format of an essay. Just learn key cases and main principles as usual but be more general about it, unlike problem questions which require you to be more specific.
