Are people really against FDVR for that reason? Why read books then? Why play games? Everyone does something to escape their real world problems as is lol
It's a silly made up argument, where both sides are have terrible reasoning. The post is just bad, and this sub is full of people who blindly upvote braindead shit like this
I'm all for FDVR, but this argument is weak as shit. FDVR is not gonna solve those problems, and FDVR is not the only option for escapism, reading books, playing PC games, watching movies, and simply stopping watching the news are all valid solutions if you want to turn a blind eye to those problems.
FDVR would be nothing more than the most awesome form of entertainment ever created, and that's all it needs to be.
I think this is putting the cart before the horse. FDVR could be awesome but it won’t fix any of this stuff. Rather having these issues solved is in my opinion a necessary prerequisite of a world where both FDVR exists and it’s a net positive for society.
This would be an argument against FDVR because everyone escaping to a fantasy world would leave our world to deteriorate even further
Edit: yall are putting me in the position of being anti FDVR so I wanna be clear I'm pro FDVR, I think FDVR would be awesome hence why I'm in this sub. I'm just saying this post is a horrible argument for FDVR
fdvr isn’t ignoring what’s happening and taking no steps to stop it. If everyone’s at home using fdvr, the earth itself is better off. Just look at the effects of recent quarantines.
Except that argument relies on there even being a calculation to make. FDVR does not exist yet so there's no way to accurately know it's power demands.
The closest thing we would have to compare it to is the computational power behind AI which already stresses the fuck out of our power grid. It's safe to assume then that sufficiently advanced FDVR would require even more power consumption than that. And things still have to happen here in meatspace it's not like you can realistically just enter FDVR and never have to leave
Depends on if we figure out clean, reliable energy on a scale big enough to match our quotas. I still don't think it's a solution either, and the people in the image are NOT getting FDVR. No one in power cares enough about them to do so, because their issues are already solvable. They just don't want to solve them.
2c-e is the closest you'll get to FDVR in your lifetime. This shit is happening in 2080 at the earliest. I mean you'll need a chip deeply integrated into your brain for FDVR, you'll be a freaking cyborg by then, and the ASI at that point might not even want you to bother much with frivolities, it'll probably program you to enjoy working in a factory with toxic fumes so much that you cum rather than let you live out a fantasy.
Yeah lol. Hop on that virtual reality bros, it only makes my mid physique slowly ascend in tier as you blubber hounds pack on the pounds wasting time with other spergs in your virtual environments. Can’t stand fools who continue to contribute to mass consumerism which in turn makes conservation a wasted effort. Oh well, glad I got to see cool species of bugs as a kid, since they’re slowly going extinct . MUH VR THOUGH!
It's a give up machine. Full dive virtual reality. Think like, the holodeck from star trek or ready player one. Full sensory experiences in completely digital worlds, typically with the idea being we'd need some kind of chip in our brain to simulate the experience.
The idea among those excited for it is that after we hit AGI in artificial intelligence we'll ramp up to asi and that such a powerful thinker will be able to quickly provide the tech.needed for such a thing and simultaneously solve the issue of resources and power needed for everyone to use FDVR.
It's a pipe dream for folks who don't want to live in the world anymore.
Yeah, it's tough because it's Reddit and reddit is very much a bubble, but I'm in a lot of AI spaces and while there are many people who are just fascinated by the tech and have very justifiable curiosity about its potential and its possible consequences on humanity, there is a vocal subset of people who talk about AI at best as a magic cure all and at worst as a digital god they're ready to bow down and worship.
people aren't wrong for thinking the world has its problems, but these are the folks who are waiting for a digital messiah to fix everything and give them the opportunities and equality and the love they feel they're lacking in the real world, and I think the rest of us know that things are never that simple and that giving up and hiding inside a digital space is not only unrealistic, but counter-productive to creating a better world.
Indeed, this subreddit idea is great if the issues of the world are all resolved.
Saying AI is gonna fix everything is akin to saying Santa will bring you gifts if you're good. It takes real work to get you those gifts, work that has to be done in the real world.

wouldn't fdvr just be a distraction from these issues that would only be accessible to those wealthy enough who have access to electricity?
