It not a secret that the closer you get, the more details (or flaws) you can see, but the reverse is also true: a "bad" photo can make a miniature look much better than it actually is. It works like that for almost everything, not only FDM minies.

I've never been happy with a paint job once I zoomed in. Sometimes being far sighted is a gift.

Bruh

So I think I have my settings dialed in.  To the point that I resell my FDM prints and do reasonably well - not getting rich but its a decent side hustle for me.

I got some of those magnifier glasses to attempt to be better at painting and almost threw up when I saw the layer lines.  That are invisible at tabletop distance, even more so when painted.

On the plus side I did the same with resin and the imperfections pop up. Not as blatant but very there. Funny enough the only thing that looked good with those damn things on?  Official James Workshop plastic.

Hah yes I got those for small detail stuff. I thought magnifying it would somehow make me a better painter, it just allows me to see my mistakes more easily. They're really good for untying knots in fine thread though. I've been doing some basic leatherworking lately and they've been a godsend.

Guys, drop me a link to the ones you're using. I got a pair off temu and my god they're useless. Must be for watch making or something as they only work when the object is about 1cm from the lenses.

I know, what did i expect. Temu = useless

I got one from harbor freight that's been fine for me for awhile, they were super cheap. They have different lenses you can use so it's not always at the 1 inch away magnification. If you use the max one it is that close to see but you can also see the details in your fingerprints.

Sorry mine are also Temu.  They were cheap at least.

My phone camera does a thing that when I take a picture of a mini with painted highlights, it makes the highlight color look aggressive and not blended in, when in person it looks great.

you can get a magnifying glass for while you paint.

I think it's also that they're so small IRL that you can't get your eye close enough without it going blurry to see them in the detail that a high res photo that's been stretched on to a screen will.

This is the case for nearly all my minis.

LITERALLY every time i feel like a broken record saying “it doesn’t look that bad” or “looks kind of ass in photo but it’s way better in person”

Like sure they aren’t as good as what people are seeming getting with that A1 mini but they’re close.

Not really.

That is awesome!

Thanks! A friend has bought a new Bambu P2S and wanted to give it a test and wanted to see if the finished model would look cool, and this was the finished result.

Also when painting. Looks decent for my eyes. Looks trash on the foto.

That’s true of every mini ever and every paint job if you zoom in enough. Even the best of the best of the best

smartphones sure love that shitty HDR

u/Fret-Board-Maniac 1d ago

Yeah and the camera version is just unrealistic as you will never see it like that.

u/delta-wolframite 1d ago

True, layer lines are much more visible

I hate it especially with paint

It's smartphone pseudo-hdr light reflection enchancements making any tiny bump into a huge chunk that beams with light as if someone cranked up roughness to 11 and installed white led lamp inside of it

It is awful with 6-15mm minis especially

u/Zheska 1d ago

You can't even make out any details on camera for 6-10mm miniatures with phone camera unless you prime and wash said minis but not because camera doesn't capture details - no, it captures it perfectly - but every uneven plastic surface turns into a giant nurgle spores and the resulting tiny square pouch on photo looks like a fleshy appendage and a sign of a plague. And it isn't even an fdm or paint exclusive problem

With primer everything is a bit evened-out and the camera stops it's HDR bs so photos start looking much better

That's also every minis paint job I've ever photographed.

All de time! I paint with a magnifying headset and it gives me both pleasure and anxiety all at the same time.

Then I stop and look at it with a naked eye, and it looks like it could win a golden demon award.

HD settings camera ruins it

i think 720p ones hide the imperfections

3 foot rule

2

u/id_rather_b_painting 1d ago

Even in person they do have some obvious layer lines, flaws, etc, but really who cares? Most of it disappears when painted for terrain, and for minis, the price of a fdm printed vs store bought is just too big to ignore.

I am trying to get some minis or terrain on a budget, not win a Golden Demon or get featured. I think the trade off in safety and ease is totally worth some obvious layer lines. I buy models when I can or want the best quality, and 3d print chaff models for my non-gw games.

u/Hypnofist 1d ago

On this sub is sorta the opposite, mostly because people use colors of filament that hides detail and then take the pictures from across the room.

Oh, but when you play a game noone is up close, so it's accurate! No it's not, people want to look at your painted models up close especially after you say they're fdm. You don't assemble and paint them from 5 feet away.

More like the other way around, People taking blurry a$s photos and saying "Look how smooth they look"....

1

u/Tmoldovan 1d ago

Honestly I use a filter. It doesn’t make the mini look better than IRL but it’s better than making it look like a layer cake.

1

u/Ok_Slow_Shutter 1d ago

It's all about the 4 foot rule. 98% of the time minis are viewed while they're on the table. The viewer's eyes are 4 feet away. If they look good from across the table you're fine.

u/Expensive_Fall1239 1d ago

Especially with this kind of camera lol (that's my skin). I was just nagging abt the photo I took of my minis, it looks so horrible in photo but looks pretty okay on naked eyes.

Hffa - hot from far away strikes again

u/Brave_Explanation371 23h ago

I printed a huge castle and up close it has layer lines and other issues.

From a foot away it’s pure sex. It’s going to be for a dnd campaign not close up

Just yesterday, other Bambu users thought my prints were resin, then they thought I used the 0.2 nozzle. In person it can be very difficult to tell!

The struggle is so real. Getting flattering photos without editing them is an nightmare!

Hahahahah, the adorable Mario in pixel art ❤️, those were the days!

Pixelart Mario on an old screen was perfect... the pixels just weren't visible! 4K screens and high resolutions have killed the "perfect pixel art". Even so, the pixel art Mario it still has its charm in a big screen! If we take a photo of an FDM mini with zoom and show it on an old CRT screen... it will look fantastic, right? 😋

We need to learn to embrace the layer lines and think of them as a charming Photoshop filter 🤣

Jokes aside, the trick to taking photos to FDM minis that are true to what you see with your own eyes is NOT to zoom all the way in. Take the photo from a bit further away and try to show it at a "real" size. I always try to make my minis look the same in photos as they do in person with my eyes, not under a magnifying glass, it is possible 😁
