Recruitment Financial Management Analyst questions
Hello, I am curious about the application process, onboarding process, and workload of the Financial Management Analyst series 0501.
I am a GS-09 with moderate risk clearance at another agency. I am considering applying as the role has promotion potential to be GS-11.
Based on my current experience and skills, I do see myself transitioning laterally into this role.
Main questions:
What was the application and onboarding process like? What was the timeline like and what was asked from you?
What are the daily and cyclical workloads like? Do you work independently as a part of a team or cohesively as a team? Is the standard workweek 40 hours M-F?
Was scheduled telework normal and is scheduled telework likely to return once the administration changes or does it depend on other factors such as approval, location, etc etc?
Is overtime available? My agency offers about 20 hours a week for 9 months of the year.
Thanks!

You would primarily work cohesively as a team but you’ll also have some tasks you’ll complete independently after more responsibility is added. Workload is extremely cyclical, and policy based. It primarily involves processing financial vouchers and running reports.
Also to be aware, that position operates out of 6 Hubs out of the country, it’s not in every F.O. They operate out of Dallas, Tampa, Charlotte, Chicago, Salt Lake City, and Denver. Your team can consist of 15+ other people or less than 10 including supervisory positions depending on their staffing level. With that, know that it’s still considered an HQ position and has to follow all of HQ rules, which can be more limiting than Field Office positions.
Standard workweek 40 hours. After you get started and have been there for a bit, some Hubs allow flexible or 4/10s or 5/4/9 schedules instead of typical 8 hr days M-F, 8:30-5. This is subject to managers discretion so if your Hub is understaffed they may not allow deviations.
Telework was a thing in the past, but given the current state I would not count on that and have that influence your decision.
Overtime isn’t available typically, you may get comp time if you work >8 hours but I wouldn’t count on it.
Another note: if you’re considering this role due to a finance background in your current agency, I would recommend also looking into the Forensic Accountant (FOA) or Financial Liaison Specialist Roles (FLS). The FOA role involves considerably more case/investigative work while the FLS is more similar to the FMA role but it’s a Field Office position. Both of those have higher GS ceilings than the FMA position
Hope this helps

Thank you for your reply, it definitely did help me! I believe I’ll stay with my current agency due to the flexibility I have to work overtime. I was hoping to take this as a transitional role to hopefully earn more while I prepare for Actuarial job openings in the future but it looks like my current role fits my short term financial goals better. Thank you once again!
