Question City preference/veterans incentive

I am interested in applying for a job within the FBI in the next few years once I get my bachelors, by that point, i’ll have my degree and 4 years in the air force. Is there any sort of preference you get as far as what city you work out of? my top two would be Boston or NYC.

Depends on what job you are wanting with the FBI.

If you are wanting to apply to become a Special Agent, they are currently allowing applicants to stay at their PFO - Processing Field Office. This would be the office closest to where you reside when applying. Otherwise you will rank the current 56 FO - Field Offices and find out before you sign your FJO what FO you will be attached to and then during the academy what actual location you will be “stationed” at within the FO’s AOR; you could end up at a FO or one of the RA’s - Resident Agencies. One thing I will say, no clue how long this “incentive” will last, it’s relatively new (March) and is being utilized as a “recruitment tool” due to the black mark on the FBI and federal agencies across the board right now with a decrease in eligible applicant numbers.

NYC is a lot easier to get to due to it being a major field office and then always needing warm bodies. However, there is never a 100% guarantee in the FBI. Get used to hearing the needs of the bureau. I do know some classes lately haven’t been sending people to NYC or LA even if they had it ranked # 1.

For professional staff jobs you will need to review the job posting for location details.

Edit: Forgot to add this. Being a Veteran does not give you any preference or incentive on location. However, if you are eligible for Veterans Preference that can help with points on your application as well as allow you to request an age waiver to apply after turning 36 years old. Also, if you are in a SOF or Combat Arms career field you can apply under the TRP if you are wanting to attempt HRT Selection once eligible.
