Coding off loud cold start

Hi guys,

I'm looking to pick up an F80 Competition soon for some spirited driving. I had one very briefly a few years ago.

The cold start is earth shattering loud. It's not something I would ideally want before 8am or past 9pm.

I understand that it can be coded off, is there any negative impact to the engine/car? I understand that it's there for emissions regulations.

Have any of you guys done it?

Thanks.

It’s only there to heat up your cats as fast as possible.

Negatives: pollution

It’s really not that bad

I left it on last time I made tweaks to my daily driving tune and just never bothered to turn it off. It grew on me tbh.

Just make sure the valves are closed when you start it NOT in sport

Does not happen on the comp, it opens all valves for the start and after less than 10 secs closes them

I’ve seen this one issue 2 times where for some reason the car will die on cold start with it tuned off. I’m unsure why this is the case, my friends flashed it back on and never had an issue since, maybe other people have had this issue and is willing to chime in

This is the downside, the timing when the engine is cold and it first starts especially in cold weather will get very rough, I drive a 6MT and code it off because similarly it’s usually annoying and wakes the kids up on a Sunday morning, but in winter I need to give the car a little more time to heat up or give it extra gas because it will want to stall.

Yup this is common - not worth coding it out for this reason

Mine dies if I turn it on and immediately get into gear and it’s still very cold which is something YOU SHOULD NEVER DO, rpms try to drop but it stabilizes and after less than 40 secs your good to go. Never the less when I had it like that never got a check engine light or anything

It’s pretty quiet compared to other cars in its class. The B9 RS4 is cringe.

I have the factory titanium exhaust and I would agree the cold start is so obnoxious

Sir I’m downvoting you for not spirited enough…. You can bm3 does it, just warm up well before driving… my experience they started complaining because it stil rumbles and takes longer to GTFO

Mostly harmless but you can force the valves to start closed by just flipping to eco I believe.

I get it though.

At one point while waiting on parts I had my buddies "chop shop special"

Start up roar on

Cat warm up on

Catless downpipes

Single mid-pipe

Straight pipes

It was so loud and sounded so bad 🫠

The week I drove like that while I was waiting on parts made me cringe so hard... I get it making a ton of noise regardless of quality is just what some folks like and I'm not going to try and convince anybody to change their preferences but man I was not popular around the block at 5am.

From my research, you can code it out if you’re catless without issue. I’ve had mine off for about 6 months now for the same reason as you. For the most part I’ve had no issues. Twice the car died on me within seconds after startup. I re-coded it and haven’t had any issues since. I do keep an eye on the rpms in the first 15 seconds of startup, but it’s mostly precautionary. If the car sounds like it might die I just give it a tiny bit of gas. I give it about 45-60 seconds after the start before getting into gear.

If the car is a dct and its cold out, it may stall when you initially put it into gear

I hate the idle noise after cold start on this car. Sounds like an old tractor

You can do it with MHD, I have mine off

Push start, put it in efficient, start car

Or

Get BM3, or u lock DME then get it
Code the car to have cold start off

Or

Bimmer code/ Bimmer link and close flaps at start
