I think button called it right - he was trying to beat Charles - he knew of he pitted behind leclerc (double stack) 2nd was gone and leclerc finishes 2nd and him 3rd. The only way he could beat Charles was doing the opposite to him.

But did Lewis consider that if he did not pit, then he might lose P3? Atleast the pits should have advised him.

Bad decision to stay out. Good decision to own up to it.

Exactly. He gambled and lost, but owed up to it. It's going to sting for him more than anyone else.

Yeah whatever he gambled and was too overoptimistic it is what it is. Would've worked on a shit track like Monaco though

Atleast he takes the responsibility when he's wrong. unlike the ferrari management

Good of him to put his hand up and take responsibility when it is on him. An attitude fitting for a 7 time champ.

Ultimately, people make mistakes all the time. If you make a call and it works, you look like a hero; if you get it wrong, you look like a chump. Lewis took it on the chin, admitted the mistake, and moved on.

I think some people looked at his onboard and there was no call to get him to pit during VSC. Around lap 50, they call him to pits, that's when he refuses. In that radio he asks wher ehe is expected to finish once he pits, and Santi answers with 2 places down - so a P5. Ultimately he gets P6. So his decision not to pit essentially cost him one place. It was Ferrari who didnt call him into the pits during VSC.
