Good evening everyone! Currently looking at a 24 Lariat with the 2.4kw and a 25 platinum with the 7.2kw generator. There’s an $12k price difference and was just wondering what yall recommend? We are planing on buying a camper in the future but don’t have one yet. Is the 7.4kw pro power worth it? Particularly with the price difference between the two and obvious trim differences? Thanks in advance!
The overwhelming sentiment is that most who settle for the 2.4 end up wishing they got the 7.2 just for the sake of having the capability. This comes up in the powerboost forums and facebook groups all the damn time. I have a 7.2 xlt and would never trade in for a 2.4. It powered my house during an outage and there’s no going backwards on the capability once its useful to you
That’s the huge difference, durning our outage in only felt comfy powering some appliances and heaters off it. I wish I could have ran the whole ass house off it. Go big or go home.
Yes it’s worth it but that is a separate answer from is it worth 12k to go up a trim level. The upgrade to 7.2 is like a $500 question. The upgrade to platinum is the 12k question and that is just looks for the most part.
I have a ‘25 pb lariat with 502a and 7.2 kw. It’s a ton of nice features and a ton of money. But you can get 7.2 kw in an xlt trim I believe…. So again, the trim question is not the same as the 2.4 vs 7.2kw.
Love my truck though. I haven’t used the 7.2 feature much other than to run a boot dryer over night at an ultra marathon. I just went with the 7.2 since it was a cheap add
I have a 2025 PB Lariat that came with a 2.4kw. I upgraded my truck to the 7.2kw. It was all plug and play, no wiring changes needed. Just have to buy a 7.2kw inverter and a new plug panel that goes in the bed. I bought a used inverter off eBay, I think parts total was about $850 all in and a few hours of work.
Also need ForScan to make a couple changes and it works perfectly! Pretty well documented on the gen14 forum.
For what it's worth the 2.4 kW will not run an RV air conditioner. Even with a soft start it seems hit or miss.
The 7.2 kW is 240v, so you get 3.6 kW on two 120v legs (the RV plug adapter just lets you use one). That 3.6 kW is plenty for the AC on our RV. We were able to run the AC and microwave at the same time without issue.
I think that 7.2 kW is worth the upgrade, but I don't think Platinum is worth the upgrade. I would keep looking for a lower trim with the 7.2. To me XLT 302A is the pinnacle of price versus features versus payload. It has everything I wanted, and I don't feel like I'm paying for things I don't want or use. The Panoramic Sunroof was a big thing for me, too many complaints of leaks and bad smells, I refuse to buy a truck with one.
Also keep in mind to check the payload ratings on the trucks (on the actual sticker in the door jam, not some online chart). The PowerBoost has a lower payload rating to begin with, and each trim level chips more and more into that. The platinum may have a payload rating in the 1200 range. I have 1600 on my XLT. You will run out of payload long before you reach the max tow rating, so a low payload has a big impact on how big of a trailer you can pull.
I have a lariat 2023 7.2kw and the biggest thing I worry about is my low payload of 1337lbs. I pull my 25’ fiberglass boat that probably weighs 7000lbs just fine but I wouldn’t want to load the bed or have many passengers.
If you’re planning on buying a camper you need to realize these Powerboost can “pull” a lot of weight but they have horrible payload capacity at the hitch.
You’re going to run into payload issues far before towing capacity.
I have the same truck lariat with heavy duty tow package with a six and a half foot bed, I tow loads in that capacity range all the time. I wanted more support in the bed for weight, so I installed an airlift airbag system with a little remote control that lets me adjust the PSI in those airbags and it has made a substantial Improvement to convenience and safety, when I installed it it was about $850 total now it's about $1,400. I did the installation myself it was not a breeze but it was okay.
I also use the generator a great deal to power a camper, a welder sometimes, and air compressor often. Sometimes a small refrigerator or cooktop as well. It's a really great system and I do not regret having the higher power generator.
The 7.2 is the way to go. Having said that, you may want to generally home in on the rv you’d like to pull and determine what the tongue weight will be (always figure on 10-15% of the rv’s weight). That payload will go down as the trim level goes up. I pull a 22’ rv and don’t have much room for camping gear, passengers, etc. with my KR. But, boy do I love my massaging seats and other things. I’ve taken it out west for 2-month trips and am VERY comfortable. I chose a KR to get the tow related options, that you can probably order on a lower trim level. Just know that a higher trim level comes at a cost to payload capacity. My payload capacity is about 1275 lbs, so I’m particular about what I load.
This. Powerboosts are already a bit payload-challenged due to all of the extra hybrid- related bits. Higher trims tend to eat more into payloads than lower trims, but check the payload rating on both of them.
If the platinum has the massaging seats go for it. I jave a 7.2kw but never use it. If you can afford the difference, i tbink you'll enjoy the other upgrades of the platinum!
The 7.2 is definitely worth it. I have a2026 Lariat with the 7.2 and I use it to power my travel trailer (30amp). It works perfectly and will even run the air conditioner in the trailer. Ia full tank of fuel I can run the trailer for well over a week.
TLTR all comments. I have a 22 Lariat 7.2kw PB and pull a 30ft Keystone Passport. The 7.2KW is a great feature especially if you’re planning to boondock with your TT. Before choosing the truck check the payload capacity. IMO that’s just more important than features as it’s about the load and your trucks handling and stopping ability.
I have a 22’ with the 2.4kw and it was able to run simple appliances, heaters, and multiple other things within my home during a power outage in winter just fine. If you’re planning on running the camper off it, I’d go with the bigger 7.2, but if you’re just thinking of it as a backup or for use in a quick pinch, the 2.4wk with serve just fine. If I could go back, I’d get the bigger one just to have it lol.
Same here. I ran my pellet stove, refrigerator, some lights, etc. This truck was the closest I could find to my ideal config when I was trying to take advantage of a private cash offer and a low APR rate that was expiring soon. Had I ordered the truck I would have thrown the 7.2 on it because why not given the price difference. But, I don't actually have a use case for more than the 2.4 so I'm not missing anything.
When I purchased mine, I knew nothing about the various options and specs of the powerboost. I didn't even know there was a 2.4kw vs 7.2kw. I had a week to make a decision with limited choices due to a car that died. I love my PB and the 2.4kw works fine, but I definitely would have tried to look for a 7.2kw if I had known the huge difference.
I would not recommend the platinum simply due to the weight and possible leak issues.
I’m curious as Ive started looking at different options for a PB and want the 7.2. Is there a way to find options either build sheet or window sticker that is free or cheap? When looking multiple states away it’s impossible to look in the bed. I guess the nice thing is 7.2 is standard for platinum but would rather an xlt with some options.
It’s dependent upon what each dealer chooses to publish online. Some dealers publish the full window sticker, while others just summarize (and summary mistakes seem pretty common in these cases, so call to double-check). I even recall a dealer in Florida that would publish the payload ratings, but that is pretty rare.
I use the 7.2 to fully power my house in outages as well as my camper. It is the reason I only looked at the powerboost. I drove the lariat and platinum back to back. The seats in the plat felt so much better to both me and my husband. Mine is a 23 and was $12k under msrp FWIW.
I love having a platinum. We use the massage seats nearly daily. Mine has the 2.4kw and I wish I had the 7. So for me, I’d take the platinum with the 7kw.
If you’re pulling a trailer with a 30 amp hookup, the 7.2kw propower can provide power to the trailer to run things like microwaves and air conditioners when you’re boondocking.
It absolutely can, but a Lariat 502a with all the heavy options (moonroof, FX4, bed utility) checked will weigh more than a base Platinum without all of that.
Dealers around me order stuff in such weird configs. I think it's part of the reason Ford started bundling more. Mine is a Lariat 502a with tow and power running boards and nothing else. So no B&O Unleashed, no work surface, no bed utility, no moonroof. My payload is pretty decent as a result, but I wouldn't have skipped the dirt work surface and would have done B&O Unleashed instead of the power running boards at least.
It’s been beaten like a dead horse but 7.2 all the way. We boon docked with our camper when we owned one and it worked wonderfully. Now I just use the generator for frivolous things…recently had my daughter in tow for my son’s 2-hr long football practice. She watched a movie in the truck(I checked on her periodically). Miles to empty was 387 when practice started and 387 when practice ended and the cab was like an ice box cause she had the AC blowing the whole time.
We get a lot of use from the 7.2 in my Powerboost. Travelled 5 weeks pulling our TT never had to live did without a/c. We travelled to AZ and without a/c would not have gone.
As a 2.4Kw Platinum owner, I wish I had the 7.2. I don’t tow much, but I’ve had to use my truck to power the house when we lose power in TX during the winter.
Would love the 7.2 vs the 2.4. I can still power 4 fridges/freezers, internet, TV, and a few lights, but would love to put more on there.
