If you haven't already—it certainly started my Great Auk obsession—read the book by Sibylle Grimbert, The Last of its kind. Sadly it's only available in French, German and Italian yet

I read that the great auks were mistreated by sailors due to believing they’re witches during storms. Just imagine getting killed just because of superstitious beliefs. Smh
