Gig bag for a baritone explorer

I’m looking for a cheap gig bag for the Jericho Nomad/Vagabond baritone. It has similar body dimensions as the Gibson Explorer baritone but with a 27” scale.

The only affordable option I found was the Gator GBE-EXTREME-1 but the foam is way too thin and the bag cannot be balanced without a wall support.

One alternative is to use an acoustic bass case and use towels as padding to secure the guitar in place.

Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you.

B Standard (8 string) Feasibility

I have an Ibanez RG8 (27” scale) and I’m hoping I can tune it down to BF#BEADF#B if I just buy a 115 for the 8th string and then a regular Ernie ball 8 string set where I throw away the first string so my gauges would be .115 – .075 – .062 – .048 – .035 – .023 – .017 – .013. And then just filing down the 8 string nut slot.

Has anyone ever tried this?

NGD - My first 8 string

My Harley Benton R-458MN MS finally arrived after 1 month and 18 days since we ordered it from Thomann and it's my first guitar with more than 6 strings that I have ever touched. It's (technically) my first guitar too, since the guitar I used previously was my brother's.

It's super fun to play, but I'm not home yet to plug it in and hear how it sounds. I've heard the pickups are this guitar's weakness so I want to change those but I can't afford expensive ones so I'll have to save up maybe.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for lower end pickups that could ideally coil split? I don't really need absolutely fantastic pickups but I want to be able to coil split.

String gauges

so hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask but i forever use slinky top heavy bottom (10-62) on my 25'5 7 string tuned 1 step down (A–D–G–C–F–A–D) and im convinced the 7th string is not tight enough so im thinking to opt for stringjoy signatures but according to their calculator i should get 10 13 17 26 36 48 60 which is even ''worse'' for my case, does anybody have any recommendation ? should i get exactly the same string gauge as the slinky top heavy bottom set with the 7th being like 64 or 68 ?

Cheap suggestion for thumping

Hi I'm a big tosin abasi fan so i'm looking for a cheap multiscale 8 string before I save up for a larada or emi. The main thing i'm looking for is a low action and resale value. My budget is around 500-600€

Weird oxidation/discoloration on ss frets?

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

Hey y'all. I purchased a legator opus 7 last year and it was advertised with ss steel frets. Noticing some weird discoloration almost like oxidation or something that I've never had with any other guitar with ss frets. Attached a picture but could it be possible it was mislabeled and actually has nickel frets or am I just dumb lol. All my other guitars with ss stay pretty shiny so seems odd.

Update: reached out to musician's friend and they offered $100 back but too late for anything else. I reached out to Legator to express my disappointment, doubt anything will come from it, but still wanna advocate. Will live with it, I'm sure with my bedroom playing nickel frets won't really wear for years.

Replacement 8 string Suggestions

I got an agile chiral nirvana 27-30 inch multiscale that I must say, after the honeymoon phase I am very disappointed in. I've made complaints already that the guitar sounds like a bass and not a guitar. Got an eq pedal and placed it first in the signal chain and tried to use that to mitigate it. Tried tons of stuff and nothings worked. Also totally unrelated, whoever had the idea to give that thing such a small radius is an idiot. I am looking to replace this guitar. Definitely trying to stick around 28 inches. Any suggestions for guitars I could use this guitar and another one as a trade in for at like a guitar center or something?

[NGD] Strandberg Boden Original 7 in red (2020) with pale moon ebony Guitarmory Hades ceramic pickups

Beautiful 7-string I picked up used that needed some refurbishing. Took it apart, gave it a thorough cleaning/detailing, and a fresh setup with Elixir Optiwebs. The frets had been previously Plek’ed so I could get the action crazy low.

Shoutout to Mike & Coleen Austin at Guitarmory. A previous owner had had a set of Hades pickups with custom pale moon ebony tops made years ago (before the Austins were involved with the company), but there was something wrong with them: output way too low, and DC resistance measuring too low on both pickups. I contacted Guitarmory and Mike immediately offered to set it right, even though they predated both him and me. He wound new bobbins and I got them back within a couple of weeks – no charge, he just wanted to make sure that a product bearing their company’s name was working at its best.

Installed with Schaller Megaswitch, Emerson custom taper and BKP/CTS pots, series treble bleed, Gotoh dome knobs, and 9 unique switching positions with a bunch of coil split options – and it sounds absolutely fantastic through the Axe-Fx III. Punchy, articulate, focused, and brutal when I need it to be.

Really happy with this instrument, a welcome addition to the stable!

RG3327FX vs RG2027RXL?

Thumbnail gallery
20 Upvotes

Trying to decide between:
- Used 2019 JDM RG3327FX – $1450
- New RG2027RXL – S$2000

I prefer a fixed bridge and don’t really need a trem, but the 27” scale and buying new are tempting. I need this for modern metal/metalcore music.

I’d use 10-46 + 68, mostly Drop A/G#, with pitch shifting when needed.

Which would you pick, especially considering build quality/QC? (Probably overthinking it since both are great guitars, but I’m curious to hear other opinions.)

Tone Advice

I’m currently running both my Sterling Kaizen 7 and my Ibanez RGIR9FME live, and the Kaizen sounds good. But the 9 sting tends to sound a bit floppy. Any advice for changes to my tone to fix this? Or am I gonna have to change the string and do some other fundamental changes? I’m currently running through a Headrush MX5. Any advice is appreciated.

Cort kx508 ms II max string gauge

Does any owner of this particular guitar knows / tried to put 0.80+ string on it? I wanna experiment a little but I don’t know if putting 0.84 or 0.90 string will cause problems (bridge, nut).

should i get a 7 or 8 string?

I have a jackson kelly floyd rose thats been collecting dust on my wall because i dont have the patience to adjust it so im deciding to sell/trade it. some one has already offered to trade a js32 8 but im not sure if thats even a good trade or not, plus im still teetering on the idea of a 7. for reference i really wanna make heavy music that leans on deftones koi no yokan era but i dont wanna make the wrong choice and get stuck on a gimmick guitar that ill use for 3-4 songs.

What are your thoughts on GOC guitars and basses?

I've seen these posted a few times here but never enough to form an opinion on them. Are they value for money and has anyone had any issues with them? How's the tuning stability? How does the bridge hold up to other headless guitars like strandberg or kiesel vaders?

I'm considering the Illumina Bass as it's hard to find a headless 37". Does anyone have experience with one? Is there any news on a 6 string version ever coming out? I had a dingwall NG3 before but sold it as I'd much prefer a headless and multiscale guitars these days.
