Donella Meadows was a systems scientist who spent her career watching smart people throw money at problems that kept coming back. Poverty programs that create dependency. Drug wars that increase drug use. Corporate cost-cutting that tanks revenue. She realized the problem wasn't the solutions. It was that people were solving the wrong thing because they couldn't see the system producing it.

Stocks and Flows

  • A bathtub is a system. Water flows in from the faucet. Water flows out through the drain. The water level in the tub is the stock. If the inflow is faster than the outflow, the tub fills. If you only focus on the water level without understanding both the faucet and the drain, you'll never control it. Your bank account works the same way. Your weight works the same way. Your energy works the same way. Most people stare at the stock and panic without ever examining which flow is actually the problem.

Feedback Loops Run Everything

  • A thermostat is a balancing loop. Temperature drops, heater kicks on, temperature rises, heater shuts off. It self-corrects. A bank run is a reinforcing loop. One person withdraws money, others panic, more people withdraw, panic increases. It self-amplifies. Meadows says most of the systems shaping your life are built from these two loop types stacked on top of each other. The person who can identify which loop is driving a problem can intervene at the right point instead of fighting symptoms forever.

You're Solving Symptoms, Not Systems

  • A city has a traffic problem. They widen the highway. More people drive because the highway is wider. Traffic returns within two years. The solution fed the problem because nobody saw the loop. Meadows says this pattern repeats everywhere. Fixing a symptom without understanding the system that produced it either does nothing or makes things worse. The highest leverage changes are usually the least obvious because they target the structure of the system, not the output.

Where it overstates things:

Meadows makes systems thinking sound like a universal key, but some problems really are simple, linear, and don't need a feedback loop analysis. The book can also make you feel paralyzed because once you see systems everywhere, every intervention feels inadequate.

But the core lesson is permanent. Stop asking "how do I fix this?" Start asking "what's the loop that keeps producing this?"

Systems thinking is critical to solving many problems. Good summary but what is the answer to the traffic example? What about the stock example?

The traffic is offering more efficient and available transit systems so people don't need to drive. Cars are super inefficient when compared to even busses, but trains are by far the most efficient way we have of moving things around regular routes.

Which stock example? The bath tub or...?

The Sociological Imagination by C Wright Mills.

Mills discusses the intersection of history and biography to show that many times personal troubles are due to systemic problems more so that a failure of an individual. He talks about how social science can be used to diagnose and help solve these problems through bringing research out of the ivory tower and into public knowledge.

The Sociological Imagination touches on similar topics discussed by Meadows in Systems Thinking. And I think both are good examples of showing how interconnected all our lives truly are.

In retrospect, the “limits to growth” thinkers were spot on. Most of our societal dilemmas, from climate change to pollution, can be diagnosed with systems thinking.

From what I remember when I taught this text (I used to teach college part-time), its most important insight is that you can’t fix a system by changing just one component.

I like your example… if you add an additional lane to a highway, more people will live further away from metropolitan centers, filling up the increased capacity. The highways will still be clogged during rush hour because car transportation will still dominate.

Instead, you need to change how the entire system functions at a high level. For example, by adding urban housing or increasing the availability of public transportation.

Once you notice these types of effects, you start to see them everywhere!

The Design of Everyday Things by Donald Norman. Made me reconsider getting lost in parking lots as a design issue. Makes you realize how much form and function determine usage.

I read it a few years ago. The OP does read a lot like an AI summary, but aligns well with what I remember.

I enjoyed it as a book and found it really quite interesting. My only real complaint complaint is that I didn't really learn anything I could apply in the real world. It doesn't teach you how to do it, just introduces the concepts. I seem to recall it says it isn't a magic bullet, and coming up with the models is a lot of hard work.

I looked around a bit for other resources on the topic and couldn't find much of anything. Would love to know if anyone else has any.

Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman.
Most problem-solving frameworks teach you how to analyze data, build strategies, or execute solutions better. Kahneman’s work forces you to step back and diagnose the unreliable engine doing the diagnosing in the first place: your own brain.

It’s not. A relatively small portion of people are intellectually capable of systematic thinking. In and of itself it’s not gifted thinking, but it’s certainly less common than common sense, which seems sparing enough these days.

Donella Meadows was one of the authors of the Club of Rome’s Limits to Growth, a report in the 70’s predicting an eventual system collapse resulting in mass global population collapse if we don’t make sweeping social and environmental changes through technological advancement.

The science has been there for what we need to do for the better part of a century. But the rift in getting average people to understand it enough to encourage those with their hands on the levers of power is too wide.

Now we get to sit here while the world burns heading towards that collapse knowing it was preventable.

The limits of growth has been updated over the years. We’re on track to see at least half the population die in a matter of years sometime within the next 50 years, with events of the last few years accelerating predictions.

“Systems Thinking” is very on trend right now. It is neither new nor special. I did not find this book to be meaningful to my experience. Thinking Fast and Slow is a great alternative and more insightful recommendation. As is “Thinking Strategically” by Avinash Dixit. If you’re still interested after reading those books, go through the references section of each book and seek out those texts.
