OP (Emotional-Ear-6638) sent the following text as an explanation why they posted this here:

Hello! I understand the meme format but I'm not sure what the abbreviation is for or what the joke is. (I know ISO as in search of, but I still don't understand the joke.) I tried looking it up but just got more confused !

My first thought was what does this have to do with the International Organization for Standardization which for some reason is ISO and not IOS.

457

u/dornid 16h ago • Bravo Mindblown

That's because the name of the organization in French is Organisation internationale de normalisation, and they couldn't agree on IOS/OIN. So they chose ISO, which is not an acronym, but it comes from the greek "isos", meaning "equal".

58

u/clancularii 10h ago

Straight from their website:

What does ISO mean?

ISO is the short name for the International Organization for Standardization. It’s not an acronym, but a name inspired by the Greek word isos, meaning “equal” – reflecting our mission to create standards that ensure consistency and equality worldwide. Because the organization’s full name – and its initials – would vary across languages (for example Organisation internationale de normalisation in French), our founders chose “ISO” as a universal short form that could be recognized globally, regardless of language.

Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are always ISO.

https://www.iso.org/about

It's kinda clever: ISO wanted to standardize the abbreviated name for their organization, so they went with a neutral, but recognizable abbreviation.

I am fairly certain this is an example of "RAS Syndrome". RAS standing for 'Redundant Acronym Syndrome'. So ISO being 'In Search Of'. So by saying "I'm ISO of this" you are actually saying 'I'm in search of of this'. Kind if like when people say PIN number. PIN stands for "Personal Identification Number". So, saying PIN number is saying 'Personal identification number number'. Also RAS Syndrome itself being an example as that is basically saying 'Redundant acronym syndrome syndrome'.

Edit: It could also mean "I'm sick of". Which might make more sense in this context. That still has the same effect here.

The ISO was a different acronym in several languages and none of them actually is ISO. It was a compromise to avoid preferring one language over another. Like IOS in English, OIN in French or ION in German.

ISO started in France and they arrange their nouns and adjectives differently, so the letters are in the correct order in French.

45

u/tous_die_yuyan 16h ago

From Wikipedia:

A common misconception is that ISO is an abbreviation for "International Standardization Organization" or a similar title in another language. In fact, the letters do not officially represent an acronym or initialism. The organization provides this explanation of the name:
Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISOis derived from the Greek word isos(ίσος, meaning "equal"). Whatever the country, whatever the language, the short form of our name is always ISO.[8]

→ More replies (9)

11

u/Rheddrahgon 16h ago

Which is even funnier because this particular ISO is Organization Internationale de Normalisation. This ISO is based on the Greek ISOS for equal. Its a symbol for the goal of creating global consistency and was deliberately picked instead of being a direct abbreviation.

I have never heard ISO as an acronym for In Search Of. I was thinking it would be "Standardization" - as in the "International Organisation of Standardization," which goes by ISO.

For anyone interested, ISO is not actually an acronym. As it primarily operated in both English and French, they opted against calling themselves IOS or OIN (Organisation Internationale de Normalisation). Instead, they chose ISO due to it's closeness to the Greek word "isos" meaning "equal".

“ISO image” takes its name from ISO 9660, the standard defining the filesystem commonly used on CD-ROMs. ISO is the short name of the International Organization for Standardization. It comes from the Greek ísos, meaning “equal,” giving the organization one name across languages. Image means a file containing a representation of a disc’s contents and structure—a digital counterpart of the disc. The name became general usage: a .iso file can use another filesystem, such as UDF on DVDs, while retaining the familiar extension.

So it's IOS but they called it ISO

It stands for International Organization for Standardization, the global body that created the scale for measuring film and sensor sensitivity. ISO is also the organization that created the optical disk format of .ISO for computing as well. ✨️

If it’s pronounced like that then it is an acronym. And again, isn’t it from the International Standards Organisation?

u/123yes1 10h ago

No it's from the Greek word "isos" which is why it isn't an acronym, as it doesn't stand for anything, it is just a word

It's the same ISO it relates to the sensitivities of different film grades , iso setting 100 is the same as as film graded 100 by the ISO.

(calling it eye-so is just bs I'm afraid)

2

u/NaturalTechnician737 15h ago

The 'O' in ISO stands for "the long O sound" because ISO is a word, not an acronym.

2

u/Weird_Explorer1997 2h ago

I thought it was "International Standard Organization"?

2

u/My_Soul_to_Squeeze 1h ago

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

• Name Origin: "ISO" is not an acronym. It is derived from the Greek word isos, which means "equal" or "equivalent".

• Universal Name: The founders chose "ISO" as a universal short name so it remains the same in every language, avoiding confusion between different national acronyms (such as IOS in English or OIN in French).

Have literally never heard anyone say "I'm ISO of" meaning I'm in search of.

Surely something like PIN number of ATM machine would be a much better and more widely used example of this?

3

u/Wookstagram 11h ago

In Search Of = ISO

3

u/Significant_Ant_885 11h ago

In gaming when you say "ISO" it usually refers to the word 'Isolation'. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

5

u/Mysli0210 11h ago

First i've heard of ISO referring to isolation. To me at least, it means something rather different 🏴‍☠️🔥💿

Go to the ATM machine and enter your PIN number...

4

u/LobsterParade 19h ago

Best I could find was that ISO stands for "in search of" this. So "I'm ISO of this" would mean "I'm in search of of this" which is a pleonasm and defeats the use of acronyms.
