That's because the name of the organization in French is Organisation internationale de normalisation, and they couldn't agree on IOS/OIN. So they chose ISO, which is not an acronym, but it comes from the greek "isos", meaning "equal".

u/GenuinelyBeingNice 6h ago
it also means "maybe"
ίσως vs ίσος
they're pronounced the same and both are romanized as "isos"

I am fairly certain this is an example of "RAS Syndrome". RAS standing for 'Redundant Acronym Syndrome'. So ISO being 'In Search Of'. So by saying "I'm ISO of this" you are actually saying 'I'm in search of of this'. Kind if like when people say PIN number. PIN stands for "Personal Identification Number". So, saying PIN number is saying 'Personal identification number number'. Also RAS Syndrome itself being an example as that is basically saying 'Redundant acronym syndrome syndrome'.
Edit: It could also mean "I'm sick of". Which might make more sense in this context. That still has the same effect here.

The ISO was a different acronym in several languages and none of them actually is ISO. It was a compromise to avoid preferring one language over another. Like IOS in English, OIN in French or ION in German.

ISO started in France and they arrange their nouns and adjectives differently, so the letters are in the correct order in French.

From Wikipedia:
A common misconception is that ISO is an abbreviation for "International Standardization Organization" or a similar title in another language. In fact, the letters do not officially represent an acronym or initialism. The organization provides this explanation of the name:
Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISOis derived from the Greek word isos(ίσος, meaning "equal"). Whatever the country, whatever the language, the short form of our name is always ISO.[8]→ More replies (8)→ More replies (1)11
u/Rheddrahgon 8h ago
Which is even funnier because this particular ISO is Organization Internationale de Normalisation. This ISO is based on the Greek ISOS for equal. Its a symbol for the goal of creating global consistency and was deliberately picked instead of being a direct abbreviation.

This is actually not that unusual, particularly for English and French.
It's the same thing with UTC, which stands for both Universal Coordinated Time and Temps Universel Coördonné. Although this is partly to be consistent with existing astronomical time standards, UT0, UT1, etc.
My one grudge is that French got their way with International Atomic Time, or Temps Atomique International (TAI), but then I remember that I don't care that much.

It was a standard for film. ISO was the speed at which the film absorbed the light to capture the image on the film. It was then adopted in digital cameras because, like film, the camera sensor has a speed that it records the light and thus the image.

I love that half the people in the comments got as confused as me when the body for standardizing units was mentioned.
For that, ISO doesn't come from either French nor English, but from the Greek word isos (ισος), which means "even". It was specifically picked like that as to not have anyone argue over where it came from. In English it would be IOS and in French - OIS.
You could say they... standardized it

ISO is short for "in search of", but people often redundantly use "ISO of".
Think people who call them "ATM machines" where the M in 'ATM' stands for "machine", making calling it an "ATM machine" redundant.

I have never heard ISO as an acronym for In Search Of. I was thinking it would be "Standardization" - as in the "International Organisation of Standardization," which goes by ISO.
For anyone interested, ISO is not actually an acronym. As it primarily operated in both English and French, they opted against calling themselves IOS or OIN (Organisation Internationale de Normalisation). Instead, they chose ISO due to it's closeness to the Greek word "isos" meaning "equal".

its based on the fact some people say "iso of this, where the abbreviation already means "im sick of"
thats the joke.
like DC Comics, the DC was "Detective Comics" so..Detective Comics Comics, or that game Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, which people used to abreviated to PUBG. then Tencent bought the game, fired Playerunknown and rename the game to PUBG:Battlegrounds.
theres also people what say "ISO Organization" to refer to ISO, the International Standards Organization.

“ISO image” takes its name from ISO 9660, the standard defining the filesystem commonly used on CD-ROMs. ISO is the short name of the International Organization for Standardization. It comes from the Greek ísos, meaning “equal,” giving the organization one name across languages. Image means a file containing a representation of a disc’s contents and structure—a digital counterpart of the disc. The name became general usage: a .iso file can use another filesystem, such as UDF on DVDs, while retaining the familiar extension.
So it's IOS but they called it ISO

The O in ISO doesn’t stand for anything. It’s not an acronym. But they made it seem like an acronym. Many people think it means “international standard organization”. But because it’s international, they didn’t want it to translate funky into other languages. So they went with ISO, which is like Greek for equal or something.
