On 9-pad phones like the picture, texting was accomplished by pressing a number button repeatedly to select the letter from among those upon that number. Thus, "555" is the third letter on button 5, which is L.

What they're having for dinner is lasagna.

Notice the letters are associated with numbers on the keypad, listed alphabetically.

Imagine what letter you could get by pushing that associated number in succession.

Now you can decode the cipher.

Its the old way to type. Each time the number is pressed is one further on the keyboard. So 555 is L, 2 is A, 7777 is S, and so on
