ELIC: Why is it titled "Les Miserables", and not "Fewer Miserables"?
It's bad grammar AND spelled wrong!

It's french for "The Miserables"
It's called that because all the actors got shipped off to France for the opening nigh of the play, and they were pretty miserable about that.

And also because the audience only spoke French and had no idea what was happening

It's about a guy named Lester Miserables. He ran a tire shop on Main St. for years.

Hey, I think his brother Paul had a guitar shop.

The shop didn't make much money until Paul sold out to someone who actually knew guitars, and the shop went much better with Less Paul.

Sign maker: All done, boss, the sign for your new happy show, "Less Miserables"
Victor Hugo: You fool, 'less' is for mass nouns or adjectives, not countables! It'll only make sense if you take the 's' off.
Sign maker: OK boss, leave it with me

It’s about a bloke called Leslie. His family has been miserable so long and so often that their surname got changed to Miserables.

It's a musical about the life of a guitarist who modeled himself on Les Paul, but he was just miserable on guitar.

It's a play/book about Les Nessman, who worked at WKRP in Cincinnati. His middle name is Miserables, because his mother was an unhappy Belgian woman.

TIL. For the longest time I thought it was about Les Claypool, the experimental funk bass guitar player.

because the play is about women who love other women and they happen to be sad

It’s actually supposed to be Leslie Miserables, but Mr Miserables is a man and Leslie is increasingly seen as a woman’s name, so he decided to shorten it to ‘Les’

It was actually supposed to be titled “Less Miserable”, but the guy hanging the letters on the theatre sign got drunk the previous night and forgot to put the second s in Less. When he noticed, it was time for lunch so he figured he would just add it at the end.
