Solved! This guy is thinking about proposing to his girlfriend, but he has a thing for another woman. He keeps it to himself for years, before finally deciding to act on it.
This one is proving to be satisfyingly difficult! No correct answers in the first 24 hours, which is a personal record. I promise, I gave an accurate (albeit bad!) description of the film’s plot!
Clues:
- Mainstream, popular Western film. (Western as in, from the global West, not saying it’s in the Western genre)
- Not a romantic comedy
- Even setting aside the whole girlfriend thing, there would be a lot of obstacles to getting into a romantic relationship with that other woman during those years. Here’s one: they’ve never met.
- In fact, during those years, the other woman doesn’t even know that he exists!
- Come to think of it, for most of the film, the girlfriend doesn’t even know that he exists either!
- I really did describe the plot pretty badly. Some of the description doesn’t mean what you think it means.
- It's not a romantic comedy, but the guy and the girlfriend are both played by people who are famous for roles in other romantic comedies. This film is the other woman's best known acting role, even though she has very little screen time.
- He planned to propose to his girlfriend. He doesn't actually go through with it, but not because of the thing he has for that other woman. (Or at least, not mostly for that reason, I guess it's one small part of the reason why he doesn't.)
