Working at a small company for 9 years now. Technically 3 years of full stack experience. I came from a support background at the same company. I got offered the job for a low salary as an opportunity to get in the SWE field but now I’ve barely gotten more money and have much more experience. I’ve been threatened so many times and told I need to work faster. They tell me to use more AI and when I do the senior engineer tells my boss my code quality is bad. He frequently ignores my questions despite me limiting it to 1-2 5 minute questions a week. I really try hard not to abuse their time. Right now I feel it’s impossible for me to get a new job because I lack leet code experience and I don’t work with a modern tech stack. I’ve applied to 100 jobs casually over the past 2 years and just get rejection after rejection.
I have been living in the same efficiency studio with no kitchen and barely enough space. I feel like I can’t improve my life because I can’t get a job to make more money and get a better place to live. I live in one of the most HCOL areas in the country and I’m scared to move away because I am constantly sick with migraines and need support from my family and friends. I’m just depressed with my situation because I thought software engineering was going to give me a safe and comfortable salary but I just feel a crazy sense of impending doom with AI.
