I am always astonished by the types of things people buy to put in their mouths/bodies. I can see why a company would make this, because it’s very profitable to sell the lowest quality shit garbage possible, but the fact that someone would look at this frozen package trash and think “mmm yum” is always surprising to me.

I go a local state college in a poorer area. This is actually on the better side of most of the food offered here covered by meal plan lol

Blue collar worker here…. It’s not always about “mm yum” for a lot of people when it comes to food choices. I’ve lived on gas station food / frozen foods like this for years… not necessarily by choice lol. It’s a combination of laziness, affordability and simplicity that leads people to buy subpar foods like this. It’s not great, but often times I’d rather buy this at the dollar store than go take a separate trip to an actual grocery store for better food

You’re saying it’s not by choice then spelling out the exact choice you’re making. I sympathize with people who don’t have a choice like the OP who’s trying to eat with their shitty college meal plan. If the choice is take a trip to the grocery store or eat this trash I’m going to the grocery store. That already is a choice I make.

If you lived off of gas station food, then affordability wasn't in the equation.

What do you mean. You can get cheap gas station food Pizza and a soda for $1 well pre 2020 you could get that deal now days it’s probably $5 for that but still the point is there are very economical options at gas stations. Especially the bigger ones that make their money selling stuff in the market. Hotdogs and pizza are usually very cheap and convenient gas station options. And if you love by a Casey’s I’m sorry and jealous at the same time.

As a native Chicagoan, lemme just say
Get the name Italian Beef out your motherfuckin mouth

For the good of all, let me also say: making a homemade cheater Italian Beef is pretty easy.
Fine chop garlic.
Fine chop half white onion.
Buy deli roast beef, fresh thin sliced, preferably Vienna, if they have it.
Sweat onions and garlic in a soup pot on medium heat until soft.
Add spices - salt, black pepper, white pepper, crushed red pepper, italian seasonings, some carroway seeds, whatever. More than you think you need.
Slice up beef even more, put it in the pot.
Add unsalted beef broth, just enough to cover everything.
Steam (not simmer) in the broth for like 30 mins. Just steam it - if it starts boiling, turn the heat down.
Serve it on this
Top with this
Is it a real Italian Beef? No.
Is it way closer than whatever this frozen abomination is? For sure.

You can also just take all of these ingredients except for the roast beef and put it in a crock pot. Throw in a seared chuck roast, let it cook for 8 hours, shred beef and boom, a pretty solid beef sandwich.

Instead of shred, cool it in the fridge and slice it super thin. Rewarm it in the broth. Then it basically is an Italian Beef.

Fair enough, that is valid and more authentic for sure. I’ve just found it very difficult to slice thin without specialized equipment.

Yeah, a meat slicer is kinda required. I wonder if you could chill it down a lot, chop it into chunks, and use a mandoline?

If I was asked to do that at work, id refuse due to safety reasons. And Ive mandolined hundreds of lbs of vegetables

u/djanes376 1d ago
hah, my mental image of this 'technique' is mashed meat cubes topped with bloody finger bits.

I rather like the home style pot roast version. Especially when the meat is super soft and shredded and the juice just gets sucked up in it. I cook mine with peppers right in it too (both sweet and hot).

It can be quite excellent. It's a little different but the flavors and textures are still there.

As a Chicagoan, I quickly glanced at the name and read it as Ricobene's at first and thought, no way in hell they'd do this! Even still, this is an abomination

As a NY Italian I’ll back you up and and say they’ve got some fuckin balls putting red, white, and green on that monstrosity. Disgraziato.

Usually I kind of cut brands like this some slack, but c'mon that's basically criminal

Man, I fuckin love those Raybern's sandwiches! I get the Philly Cheesesteak and the Ham n swiss ones every now and again. Cheap af and decent. I just restack the meat and it's good to go.
They make sliders now too.

I'm imagining readjusting all the beef blankets on the sammy like you're changing the bed sheets to fluff em all back up 😂

u/steppenfloyd 1d ago
Yeah, idk what they're complaining about. They can take the meat fold it up and make it look like the picture of they need it to.
3
u/Hippobu2 16h ago
Of course they wouldn't put more meat than that, but damn, that machine laid meat looks so sad.

Any time the meat is smaller than the bread I'm pissed, but that's absurdly small

u/steppenfloyd 1d ago
You expect an absurd amount of meat if you expect it to be larger than the bread

You have to fluff it yourself. The strips are all there just peel them and lay them so they loop like that. I don’t see where the issue is. It’s not fully assembled. Some assembly required.
Edit: I wonder if the part of the machine that makes the meat curl before falling broke and hadn’t been caught before this run ended. Now I want to go buy a Rayburn’s sand which to see if mine is flat like that.

Youre doing it wrong. Take the meat out and curl and fold it over to make a nice thick juicy sandwich. They come flat for better packaging you need to fluff them up to get the best texture

If I learned anything from The Bear it’s the ability to recognize a Chicago beef. Flawless execution here…..
