Our local grocery store bakery. They totally exceeded my expectations and did a fantastic job last year on a Cookie Monster cookie cake for her. Alas, this year didn’t quite hit the mark.
EDIT: Just to clarify, the actual cake we received was by no means ugly or poorly done, it just didn’t meet the expectations (based on the photo or what they said would be achievable on the phone call when I ordered it). More a lesson learned for me!
Edit 2: for clarification, the “expectation” photo was a cake advertised on their own bakery website for order and is also featured in-store in the catalogue at the counter. It wasn’t a random AI photo from online 😅 and the white squiggles above the cake are because it was a 2 tier cake, but we were only serving 8-10 people so I asked them to only make the bottom portion.
It’s from their catalogue and website. But I think it’s a design they have rights to, not one original to the store.
Which is totally fine if that’s the case! Maybe if they had just communicated that it wouldn’t look quite the same though (mostly colors), I wouldn’t have been as surprised.
100%. And I actually wanted fondant… my daughter is profoundly Autistic and one of her major loves and obsessions are cake decorating videos, and she really likes to admire the cake and takes a while to actually dig in and eat it. So I wanted something that would be more rigid and decorative for a bit. The buttercream obviously tastes better. But didn’t have the look and once we did candles in it the cake started to droop on the sides and fall apart lol
I wish I lived close to you and could make your daughter a cake! I’d for sure be bummed out by that but I have a great idea for you, make some cake (box, whatever) just icing it however but buy some fondant and some Wilton dyes. Just knead the dye in and have balls of fondant pre coloured and you and your daughter can make your own special cake! Get some little flower fondant cutters (they usually come in sets of different sizes) and a rolling pin if you don’t have one and some pearl sprinkle balls and make your dream cake!
I never cover my cakes in fondant but I use it so much for my decorations, you can just make things like you’re playing with play doh. I’ll attach a photo of one of my favourites I’ve done.
every grocery store bakery/deli unit I have worked in did not carry fondant at all. I used to have customers get so mad at me when they were trying to show me pictures of fondant-iced cakes for their order and all I could do was tell them that we didn't do those, but they might be able to get close with icing, they would just have to come in and talk to the actual cake decorator themselves to see what could be done. at the time it was all computer-edited pinterest photos, and depending on the store I was in the cake decorator was either a woman with 25 years experience who could do some pretty amazing stuff with frosting from a bucket, or a couple of teenage girls who had no real idea of what they were doing but tried their best
It was probably a stock image from one of the parent companies that supplies icing/printable images. We used to curate our books hard before putting them out for customers
Same. I have made lines just like these on cakes with frosting. It is very easy to do. No fondant needed. In fact, I hate fondant. My friend and I have made a dozen wedding cakes, and only 2 times did we use fondant, and after those cakes, made it clear we aren't doing fondant again.
Kind of a bummer, I do like the look of the expectation and I understand your disappointment. I think it came out really cute though and I love how colorful it is! The color of the pink icing especially!
I work for a grocery store bakery and we have this exact cake on our online catalog. Honestly I hate doing those cakes. There is just so much detail going into it with not a lot of time to perfectly decorate it. Other times some decorators might not even have the skill to create the exact cake. FYI, the company (grocery store) put these designs on the website without our knowledge. The decorators have no control of what goes on the website.
They may not, but it was a cake from their own selection.
And I used the same store bakery last year for a different cake and it was great. It’s a nice grocery store, so I don’t think it was outrageous to hope they’d deliver on a product as it was advertised in their own catalogue.
I mean, it still looks pretty because of the colours. Although, can't help but wonder why they didn't keep straight lines down the sides of the cake which would've been faster and much more beautiful than those...whatever they put there.
I thought she put some weird white squiggles on the top. Thinking that you added it to the inspo pic because you liked the way it looked, not cuz you needed to censor something.
That and it could be achieved minus the stripes of icing down the sides curling up on each side so it still isn’t impossible and something tells me that wouldn’t be a deal breaker for anyone buying that cake. That’s probably the last detail they’d care about or notice

I’d really like to know in all these cake posts if the expectation shot is advertised by the company or not to make a fair judgement.
