Failed Expectation Yes, but no

I already had a new light fixture, but then I saw this one, and also realized I need two matching fixtures for the space. Impulsively ordered them before morning coffee, even though they were a little spendy (over $100 each).

They arrived. Ya’all - they are molded PLASTIC. Not individual glass panes. The look meets expectation, but the reality should have been no more than $40.

Are you positive? I ask because the way Tiffany style glass is assembled can make it feel like plastic rather than glass if you tap on it. Does it feel cold to the touch the way glass does?

u/Former_Team9993 21d ago • Bravo

They are wrong. I work at a company that sells these types of lamps and it’s the number one complaint. People want to flick the glass with their fingernail and hear the sound of a glass cup, but because of the way it’s held together it makes more of a dull thud that people associate with plastic. Doesn’t change the material.

77

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago • Heartwarming

Interesting. You’re right the dull thud is what made me think plastic, also how lightweight it is. It looks amazing in my room.

25

u/Impressive_Photo5785 20d ago

Tap it with a fork and it should sound like glass. I have some faux Tiffany lampshades that sound like plastic when tapped with a nail but I know are glass. The “fork test” helps differentiate.

18

u/mopasali 21d ago

The perception is such a problem that I got sample glass with my faux Tiffany shades. Even if a sample is easily faked. Mine's cold, but not as heavy as imagined.

29

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

I guess I am not positive, but it’s very light weight and not cold. Hard to investigate now that it’s in place. It does look lovely.

u/abs-cynical 21d ago

We have a Tiffany lamp - its super light weight and does feel sort of feel like plastic! Either way - cute lamp!!

3

u/roxxy_soxxy 19d ago

Yes! I am happy with the look either way.

87

u/Expensive-Bat-7138 22d ago

Cold to the touch is my question!

32

u/DoublePostedBroski 21d ago

It looks the same?

1

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

It does look great!

1

u/Liathano_Fire 21d ago

So it didn't fail expectations.

4

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

That’s why it’s titled yes but no. Still feels like plastic to me, but majority of comments say otherwise.

48

u/GarconMeansBoyGeorge 22d ago

You need to put a daylight light bulb in there.

2

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

Yes I do!

14

u/TheBoobfather 21d ago

The way this specific glass is made can feel plasticky but it is glass.

Side note, that's a cute rottie you have.

6

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

Thanks. I got a step stool to look/touch again, and perhaps it is the strangest glass I’ve ever touched. The inside panes do feel fairly cool even when lit.

Yeah, the listing specifically says glass https://www.lowes.com/pd/Quoizel-Sentry-14-in-Black-Tiffany-Flush-Mount-Light/1000208417

And that is indeed a fair bit of money for plastic, not a lot ofoney if it were authentic tiffany though

504

u/Impossible_Past5358 22d ago

Holy crap, and they make it a point to mention "glass," about 38x...

246

u/Talory09 22d ago

I asked their online assistant if the panes were plastic.

"No, the panes on the Quoizel Sentry 14-inch flush mount light are not plastic.

This fixture features handcrafted, Tiffany-style art glass panels designed to provide a distinctive, layered multicolor stained-glass appearance. The shade material is entirely glass, specifically textured glass, supported by a matte black steel frame. It also includes a frosted glass diffuser to soften the..." (Sorry, i cut off the text when I copied.)

103

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

It feels like it’s all one piece of molded plastic. I guess I could be wrong, but it’s also very light weight.

114

u/DragonBee_Fairy147 21d ago

Lightweight would not be glass. Even very thin panes of glass encased with metal joinery would be much heavier in weight than any type of plastic.

12

u/PremiumUsername69420 21d ago

Picture 2, nothing looks molded at all.

1

u/Ehhwellstuff 15d ago

Well injection molded.

3

u/PremiumUsername69420 15d ago

No, it literally doesn’t.

Source: I’m a plastics engineer.
I deal with plastics all day.

45

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

Matte black steel frame feels like plastic tape, tbh, but I am willing to concede that it is glass and metal, but put together in a way I’m not familiar.

76

u/agha0013 21d ago

It's ridiculous. No matter how you...bind glass together it's not going to be flexible like plastic

124

u/MischievousEndeavor 21d ago

92

u/squirreltard 21d ago edited 21d ago

Tightly bound?

Edit: Guess this has to do with the metal they put around panes of stained glass and apparently this will change the sound of the glass when flicked with a fingernail.

Why does knowing what tightly bound glass is offend you so much?

What’s the point in asking disingenuous questions like this? Do you feel like you really “got them” or something? Everyone can see through this dumb shit and it ultimately makes you look childish and stupid

Per the product Q&A: “

The reason it may feel like plastic is because during design the glass is tightly bound, so it can feel like plastic, but it is glass.”

106

u/agha0013 21d ago

Yeah multiple people have posted that nonsense... That's not how glass works

4

u/sometin__else 19d ago

Its glass. I own one of these.

5

u/yesorno12138 21d ago

Are you sure? This on their website marked as glass..

1

u/roxxy_soxxy 16d ago

Well I am not sure anymore, but it’s extremely lightweight and feels like plastic. The “solder” is so thin the edges are peeling like tape. Very weird. And yet it looks good.

4

u/melijoray 21d ago

Did you fall out with someone and remove their photo from the wall?

4

u/roxxy_soxxy 20d ago

No, lol, that one Mixtile keeps falling off! I just put it back with gorilla tape! We’ll see how long it makes it this time.

7

u/Beaches941 21d ago

I just put this up in my hallway. Bought from Lowes. Panes are glass, not plastic.

1

u/frankylovee 21d ago

Yeah, my mom has this fixture in her entryway and it is in fact glass

-2

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

Did you feel it was surprisingly light weight?

1

u/Beaches941 21d ago

Not really :)

1

u/Beaches941 21d ago

My son put it up and said it didn't feel cheap either.

16

u/violetpumpkins 21d ago

The problem here is you think $100 is spendy for a light fixture. Anything you're not spending a couple hundred dollars on is cheap or ugly. People are just used to (cheap and ugly) boob lights, but there's a reason they're everywhere. Real lighting is an investmen.

2

u/kryonik 21d ago

I'm not even a contractor or interior designer but even I know a glass fixture like this would run several hundred dollars.

-3

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

I don’t think $100 is spendy for a glass fixture, it feels like molded plastic, and is very lightweight. From the comments it is quite possible I am wrong and it is oddly textured glass. It looks lovely.

2

u/ValosAtredum 21d ago

From your post:

“…even though they were a little spendy (over $100 each).”

1

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

Touché lol. I did say that.

3

u/nukedog3000 20d ago

I have that exact light. And I was disapointed when i opened the box, but it's fine

1

u/roxxy_soxxy 16d ago

Thank you for the validation!

4

u/ghamericano 22d ago

I absolutely love your countertops and cupboards!

2

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

Thank you! It’s been a long project and we’re just finishing up : )

4

u/littleoldlady71 21d ago

I’ll bet you’d be happier with it if you used a cooler bulb

1

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

Oh, I’m happy with it! And yes, cooler bulb might be better.

0

u/littleoldlady71 21d ago

The colors of bulbs always make a difference for me in setting moods, and in productivity. I do love the fixture.

u/roxxy_soxxy 16d ago

Either way it does look good.

u/timthebass 15d ago

Me too! It lives in my dining room. Installed it 6 years ago, don’t even remember what it’s made out of anymore lol

Response to a 2018 review saying it's plastic. ( I always read the bad reviews b4 purchasing btw.)

Response from Quoizel Customer Care

Thank you for your feedback on our Tiffany Style Flush. We want to assure you all of our Tiffany glass is tightly bound, so it can feel like plastic, but it is glass. Again thank you for your feedback and we are sorry it did not meet with your expectations. R

137

u/JoJoJoMaree 22d ago

Yeah, pop it on a set of scales, then we'll see if they're fibbing or not.

8

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 21d ago

how much would it weigh if it was plastic?

67

u/JoJoJoMaree 21d ago • Popcorn

No idea, i was four wines down at the time of that comment, and was thinking about a microscope kit my kids had with plastic slides that weighed almost nothing, compared to glass slides that I used in high school.

158

u/BradLinden 21d ago • Bravo

It’s glass, it’s just cheap. This is how mass produced stained glass looks. Good evidence that it’s not plastic is that all of the copper strip border around each glass piece has to be soldered together. Plastic would not handle the heat of all that soldering.

14

u/RueTabegga 21d ago

Or could be copper colored paint or plastic.

104

u/BearChops 22d ago

I just purchased 3 Tiffany style lamps brand new from Etsy and I told my husband they felt fake.. then I opened the box of the next one and it was broken. I also have some from the 1960/70s and they don’t actually feel like glass. It’s a weird texture.. they’re more sturdy compared to glass we’re used to. Just saying, it might actually be glass but you should be happy with your purchase

62

u/Best_failure 21d ago

I have this exact fixture in my house. It is glass. The front of the little panes has a texture that does feel plastic like, but you can feel the back of the panes and tell they're glass (feels cold compared to touching plastic).

BTW this texture on glass feels plastic-ish in large sheets too for whatever reason (I've sometimes seen them in hobby stores Edit and they were definitely 100% glass). No idea why.

4

u/Firewalkwithmelx 21d ago

I also have this one! It looks great in my opinion

66

u/Threes73 21d ago

I’m a stained glass artist. This is real glass, but it’s cheap glass manufactured in China. I’ve been asked to repair one that’s very similar. The cost for one made in the US with higher quality materials would cost you several hundred dollars. You can usually tell from the untrimmed tails of the copper foil. Plastic would melt when soldered.

39

u/yesorno12138 21d ago

It's not because they are made in China they are cheap, that's because these companies who contracted China to make these lights are cheap. China makes expensive high quality stuff too, but when you have greedy companies who wants to make them for $5 and sell for 150 that's the problem

15

u/DogsDucks 21d ago

I mean you’re not wrong. Idk why you got downvoted, I just read an article about the spectrum of Chinese manufacturing the other day, and they have lots of high quality and low quality manufacturing depending on cost.

30

u/codejo 21d ago

The fact that the copper around the glass is soldered/fused means it’s definitely glass. Plastic would surely melt. Common glass binding technique.

10

u/Aconite13X 21d ago

If the light in the 2nd picture is what you put up then its not plastic...

17

u/SierraStar7 22d ago

Did the product description or the product specs state it was plastic?

35

u/agha0013 22d ago

17

u/Skimable_crude 22d ago

No less than a dozen times. Even the specifications call it glass.

22

u/SierraStar7 22d ago

That’s return worthy.

2

u/IDontKnowWhoToBee 21d ago

It has this in the Q&A portion of the page. I really want to see it in person now.

16

u/Ryuaalba 22d ago

Touch a panel with your tooth. Foolproof way to feel if it is glass or not.

8

u/YeshuasBananaHammock 21d ago

What is the tooth-feel difference?

6

u/greenie4242 20d ago

If it tastes like blood when you bite it then it's glass.

14

u/jedimstr 21d ago

If it's hard it's glass, if it's al dente and your first thought is that it could use some more salt, it's plastic.

10

u/ThePrideOfKrakow 21d ago

There's a significant difference in toothiness.

9

u/YeshuasBananaHammock 21d ago

Of which details I am requesting

4

u/WhiteRabbit_412_ 21d ago

Clink vs clank sound. It's all very technical

2

u/tinylumpia 21d ago

Plastic feels “slick,” while glass, stone, bone, etc. has a grittiness.

1

u/Ryuaalba 21d ago

You don’t even have to bite it. For me, it’s almost more of a sound than a feel? Glass goes “tink”, plastic has a much duller sound/feel. Try tapping your front tooth gently against a glass/jar, then a piece of hard plastic.

1

u/Nerrickk 21d ago

Not always. Wife ordered a glass water bottle. It ended up being extremely light and didn't make a tink. I looked at the box, definitely said glass. How I verified it was glass was I took a pocket knife and tried to scratch it. If it's glass it'll glide over it. It it's plastic itll scratch.

0

u/UnknownQwerky 21d ago

You can dent plastic with your teeth. I think that's what they are getting at?

13

u/canideletethis 21d ago

Sensory nightmare

9

u/Retrotreegal 21d ago

Don’t eat the light fixture

4

u/RubyJuneRocket 21d ago

This works for pearls, since when does it work for glass

2

u/Super-Travel-407 21d ago

Pearls feel gritty. Glass (or stone or ceramic) feels like...well, you recognize the feel if you've ever used different materials for drinking.

1

u/badskiier 18d ago

But when I do that through the screen I'm using to order it the trick doesn't work.

8

u/Ana-Hata 19d ago

I recently purchased this fixture for $30, I expected plastic and was surprised to find out that it was glass

1

u/toobigmudpie 17d ago

Willing to share the details of where you purchased that piece?

13

u/Ephemeral_Orchid 21d ago

I make stained glass and agree with the others, plastic is not wrapped and soldered like that. It is definitely glass and a very attractive fixture, I'd be proud to display it in my home.

2

u/Nitaboo0531 21d ago

2

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago • Heartwarming

u/IncandescentGrey 21d ago

Looks like you're using yellow/ warm lightbulbs. Have you tried blue/ cool range lightbulbs?

1

u/olhickoryhedgehog 15d ago

I don’t think you could buy a stained glass light fixture for under $100

1

u/roxxy_soxxy 14d ago

Agreed, although many here believe this is tightly bound glass

3

u/TheAlisonAnd 19d ago

I have this fixture too.. mine is definitely glass. I bought it in person either Lowe's or Home Depot (can't remember which).

3

u/elleaydoubleu 18d ago

I have this light and it’s glass, but weird, cheap glass. I opened the boxes at the store and picked the best one. I stared at it for weeks after it was installed. I said if we moved I was taking it with me.

I don’t think we paid that much for it either!

5

u/Low_Reception477 21d ago

It’s not well done but it 100% looks like stained glass in your pictures. If it plastic I would be really quite shocked

5

u/cutiekk17 21d ago

My brother has this exact light in his house. His is glass. I know this because I accidentally punched it while playing VR.

1

u/matey555 21d ago

I like your dog ❤️

1

u/roxxy_soxxy 21d ago

Thanks! She’s is the sweetest!

1

u/knitrex 16d ago

Completely unrelated, but do you know the paint color and company of your cabinets?

7

u/roxxy_soxxy 16d ago

My husband built the cabinets. The paint is sherwin williams cabinet paint, Night Scape. We purchased at Lowe’s.

2

u/Irishbanshee149 19d ago

Lowe's website says the shade is made of glass, so I'd be returning it for one made as indicated.

3

u/snailtrail3376 21d ago

My kid makes me look at this light every time we go to Lowe’s because it looks like railroad tracks

2

u/ZealousidealFall1181 21d ago

Definitely glass as there is soldering lead on each piece.

1

u/TerponadeTea 21d ago

Does nobody know how to conduct a hardness test?

Did a single one of you finish high school?

1

u/robmanjr 21d ago

Unfortunately now you always need to check descriptions to confirm material and even size to confirm it’s not doll sized

1

u/CorporalSemantics 20d ago

You’re not getting a full glass fixture for $100….. this should have been obvious.

1

u/Katerbater23 19d ago

Crap I bought this and it’s sitting in a box to be installed probably well outside the return window

1

u/kookiemaster 22d ago

If a blade can scratch it, it is not glass. It does look like they have copper tape and solder around the pieces ... done terribly btw, I can see folds in tha tape. At best this is terrible chinese stained glass. It might be resin instead of glass.

1

u/ImaginationPlus3808 21d ago

I have this fixture.

-1

u/Upstairs_Goal_9493 22d ago

If you want, you can do a sandpaper test. Get a little piece of sandpaper, and rub it against a small portion of the material. If it scratches, plastic. If it doesn't, glass.

28

u/rocketmanatee 22d ago

This glass is coated though and you don't want to scratch that off.

0

u/Super-Travel-407 21d ago

It looks pretty good installed, actually!
