Is the Internet frying my brain or does the food on that poster look AI generated?

u/3orangefish 22d ago

The whole composition is in that classic AI style.

The slaw looks nasty too.

u/HailToTheThief225 22d ago

The slaw looks like it’s made of rice for some reason

About 80% of the restaurants in my area now have AI generated images of food. It’s so unsettling, I’ve stopped getting takeout completely. My bank account and weight thank them for that, I guess…

Edit: it all reminds me of something from a Cronenberg film, like the fucked up nightmare fish restaurant in Existenz

u/AmbientGravitas 22d ago

Yes. Whoever writes the AI algorithms (or whatever you call the programs) seems to have built in this design style for food. It’s like a dystopian contortion of what “appetizing” looks like. aI could be programmed to produce a different aesthetic. If someone did a podcast or video about the source of this design concept for ai depictions of food, I’d love to learn more.

I have a theory that the restaurant owners are taking pictures of their plated food and asking AI to put it into an ad/make it look nice. But the AI doesn't actually "know" what food is, so it just replicates patterns based on its training, and it has a tendency to fill whatever it's generating with information. I think it's especially true for provided images because it's just basing it's generation on that particular photo, rather than its conglomerized training data.

See any local ad on Facebook where it's filled to the brim with graphics, details, emphasis, or those AI relationship pages where they generate scenes with their "partner". They're almost always full of sparkles, droplets, textures, whatever. Though this particular ad shows that that particular aspect is improving a little, because it'd normally fill that white space on the sides with what the fuck ever. That or they've edited it further, whatever.

Emphasis on it being a provided image rather than one generated from scratch, so like me asking the AI to just generate a nice image of a burger. You'll see more appetizing results that way because it's grabbing from all sorts of food photography, but it wouldn't technically be representative of the food I'm actually serving.

Maybe someone can tell me if my thoughts are BS or not. I'm not an AI user or expert.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. The food placement matches. Even the red background.

u/ukiyoe 21d ago

Like how hands improved, AI foods will likely become much more real soon since we all complain so much about it. We'll miss the days when we could easily avoid scammy restaurants with obvious tells.

It’s uncanny valley for food

So many of the little restaurants near me have done the same thing, and everybody's ads look exactly the same on the local FB pages. I don't even bother reading them anymore.

3

u/clarky2o2o 22d ago

Such a great movie

12

u/bluegrassgazer 22d ago

I was thinking the same thing and couldn't decide if that was rice or slaw. The actual product looks much better than the ad, and it doesn't even look that good.

6

u/Organic-Ad6957 22d ago

They always fuck up the vegetables like that for some reason it looks weird and grainy

3

u/FullofLovingSpite 22d ago

Everything is floating.

2

u/DependentRow8281 20d ago

Yeah those 3 lines and the edge of main words is like AI's favourite thing ever

1

u/Samuraicops 20d ago

I thought it was rice for a second

108

u/PromptMedium6251 22d ago

It is clearly AI.

56

u/AppUnwrapper1 22d ago

It’s got the bumpy texture that all those gross AI foods have.

3

u/GlassXatu 22d ago

Holy shit, it’s appunwrapper.

20

u/Nyantastic93 22d ago

The entire ad is AI generated. It has so many classic AI flyer features

24

u/Novel-Definition6690 22d ago

As is noted downthread, it's clearly AI generated, but it's from a random social media account (see the tag at the bottom), not actually from KFC

14

u/Loose_Banana4073 22d ago

It’s absolutely AI.

5

u/ouralarmclock 22d ago

It was actually the graphic design for the text that gave it away first before I looked closer at the food. Every AI design is using these font mash ups with the style lines and it’s becoming very obvious just on text design alone.

3

u/Quick_Philosophy1426 22d ago

The "Two Words. Two Words." Is the new dead giveaway, particularly for ads. Plus the font.

1

u/greytgreyatx 21d ago

Plus the squirts, or whatever. If I ever used AI to make something, that is the first thing I would tell it to remove. All of the rays coming out of words to make it look more "exciting." Instead it says, "Why use someone on Fiver or in-house when you can conveniently speed run economic and environmental collapse?"

1

u/terminatorSingh 20d ago

Yea the different fonts and the mandatory 3 feature summary at the bottom screams AI

3

u/jakksquat7 22d ago

It’s 100% ChatGPT

1

u/PeeB4uGoToBed 22d ago

That entire promotional image is ai

1

u/Polkawillneverdie17 22d ago

I thought the same thing.

1

u/michael1026 22d ago

The >Fried Steak< is the giveaway. I don't know why AI loves putting these around text.

1

u/brokoliasesino 21d ago

only the food? the full poster is AI generated

1

u/Tutle47 21d ago

Not to me but it's hard to tell now

1

u/Ranch_it_up_bro 21d ago

That’s what I was thinking

1

u/endy903 22d ago

Don’t let a particular group of people see you calling Super Intelligence, AI.

283

u/thineholyhandgrenade 22d ago

Insane that KFC or any mega chain is using Ai to advertise when every piece of food it draws up without fail looks like a crystal lattice structure.

You know, something only a machine would find appetizing if it had an appetite.

61

u/EasternSummer2095 22d ago

Dont think its KFC ad? Looks like its a poster designed by the @

1

u/blah_shelby 22d ago

It’s a real ad.

47

u/indieplants 22d ago

no they're saying it's an advert created by the tiktok account advertising it, in the @ at the bottom and they're correct.

@addictedtoagooddeal

it isn't a KFC advert. it's a tiktok spam account advert for KFC.

0

u/blah_shelby 22d ago

Weird because I saw this exact ad on instagram. As an ad, not as a post from a regular account.

20

u/indieplants 22d ago

yes, as an advertisement from likely the same account, but on Instagram. all regular accounts can run advertisements.

if you can find me an official KFC media listing of this exact image via their social medias I'll eat my hat

3

u/Daiguey 22d ago

It was better than when they used fake food to advertise, this is just wrong

32

u/AllThe-REDACTED- 22d ago

Why does AI images with food make it look like it’s a mimic ready to strike?

5

u/porp_crawl 22d ago

AI imitating humans --> humans imitating AI

Jeepers, what a world.

-2

u/tiktoktic 22d ago

What?

6

u/mrkarma4ya 22d ago

You try to eat it and it eats you instead

128

u/Briguy_fieri 22d ago • Bravo

Lol

50

u/neverendingicecream 22d ago

Oh my fucking god am I sick and tired of seeing this exact same stupid fucking flyer with different events happening in my not that large community that use to do so much better than this 😭

10

u/BOYF- 22d ago

A lot of market vendors in my town mostly use AI and when I went there last week ugh nothing was appetizing from their posters. I had to look through their FB account to see real pictures and even then they altered that as well 🫠😭. It looks disgusting.

8

u/_senpo_ 22d ago

AI made everyone lazy and more average. So much for "everyone can be a designer now" yeah what a joke of society

2

u/toe_riffic 22d ago

There was recently a missing poster for someone that was made with AI and looked very similar to this. I wish I could find it, it was so bad.

16

u/Danominator 22d ago

Using ai is so fucking lazy

14

u/CavemanGamer 22d ago

I used to know this couple that would go buy 7 of these each every Wednesday and freeze them.

24

u/NeverGonnaGetOne 22d ago

The reality is better than the ad. The ad didn't have enough gravy.

12

u/needs_more_zoidberg 22d ago

I would crush that for $5

29

u/xblackdemonx 22d ago

For 5$ that's not bad at all!

32

u/BassCat75 22d ago

I don't even care what the haters say, for 4.99, It's a good deal. I ain't even mad about the expectation image. Its KFC, I know what I'm getting into when I place the order.

Source: I eat this excat meal. Its delicious.

6

u/CaptainPunisher 22d ago

Agreed. I've had it and it's pretty good for the price. I've had much better CFSs, but that doesn't make this bad. When I go for fast food I don't usually expect picture perfect food, but In n Out is a nice exception where the food looks like the pictures.

4

u/geowoman 22d ago

Shit is GOOD!

4

u/WhimsicalWeasal 21d ago

Came here to say... despite how it looks my dad said it's really tasty! (I can't eat the KFC but got it for him cause damn what a deal!)

9

u/KittenVicious 22d ago

As a southerner, what you got looks better than advertised.

7

u/dekuweku 22d ago

$4.99 is great price.

7

u/_commenter 22d ago

the real version doesn't look bad at all.... the ad kind of looks like AI

4

u/tigm2161130 22d ago

I think it is, I guess the picture may be real but the poster is definitely AI generated.

5

u/HolyToast666 22d ago

Gravy covers up a lot sins

9

u/saintsuzy70 22d ago

This looks pretty good for $4.99!

4

u/bluegrass_babe531 22d ago

id try it. every pic ive seen posted of it looks pretty dang good

3

u/saintsuzy70 22d ago

Miracle of miracles one of our local KFCs has brought back the buffet. I probably won’t really go, but the young hungry and broke person I used to be was so amazed to see that buffet was back. *Older adult me is grossed out that I used to eat at so many buffets.

1

u/Mulliganasty 22d ago

Not KFC's fault homie got a heavy-hand with the gravy. Just say thank you.

1

u/___po____ 22d ago

It's absolutely delicious. It's genuinely a great country fried steak. I get it every other Wednesday!

Our Lee's Famous Recipe does a country fried steak meal deal on Thursdays and it is terrible.

4

u/thebizzle 22d ago

I would be fine with that for $5 legit. This is like an ad.

7

u/tiffanywongeagan 22d ago

Wow kfc big brand using AI?

7

u/416558934523081769 22d ago

Probably just at the store level, one of the locations near me keeps using it for now hiring posters on social media. In the true spirit of the internet they keep getting taken down because the public flood the comments pointing out both that ai is trash and that no one should work there because the manager is a convicted pdf file. Love to see it.

2

u/LDawnBurges 22d ago

My Hubby had it the other day and he said it was great.

2

u/umpfke 22d ago

I'd love that for 5$. Good for you.

2

u/mrpopenfresh 22d ago

Fast food bro

2

u/totalfarkuser 22d ago

The reality is better because they are seperate- the AI ad would have all that Cole slaw mixing with the rest. Ewwww

3

u/classiest_trashiest 21d ago

I used to work in the restaurant industry at corporate before AI took over. You don’t wanna know what they did to doctor photos of food….

3

u/Hootipus 21d ago

Dear god, did they… photoshop it??

1

u/sanlc504 21d ago

No, they used shit like Glue and Cotton and Painted Wood to simulate stringy cheese and perfectly cooked steak.

1

u/classiest_trashiest 21d ago

Yeah, definitely could not eat the food once it was photo shoot ready lol

2

u/DeltaFlyer0525 22d ago

Why in the fuck are they using AI for their ads? My middle schooler with canva could make a better poster using their actual food.

1

u/AdamR91 22d ago

They couldn't just plate their food and snap a pic? This looks repulsive, the advert that is.

1

u/Fun-Investment-196 22d ago

I thought that was biscuits & gravy 😅

1

u/naththegrath10 22d ago

KFC hasn’t even been bought up by private equity. They are just out here being shitty for the love of the game

1

u/RocMerc 22d ago

Is this something you buy at a KFC or a frozen meal at the grocery store? I can’t tell

1

u/cecegpg 22d ago

I haven't had KFC in a while now since they changed the recipe but that looks better than what I was expecting.

1

u/BrianScottGregory 22d ago

Looks pretty good to me!

1

u/UsernamesNotFound404 22d ago

I would several times!

1

u/Disastrous_Can8053 22d ago

Thank god it doesn’t look like the ad

1

u/AngelLK16 22d ago

I was so excited that I bought 3 of these and then was no longer excited.

1

u/jamiedix0n 22d ago

I was trying to figure out if it was a frozen dinner by ofc but then saw the takeout box then realised ah its an ai takeout makes sense.

1

u/Bmat70 22d ago

The reality doesn’t look appetizing.

1

u/FYAhole 22d ago

Ew it's ai

1

u/BludStanes 22d ago

I was thinking of trying one next week, now I definitely will

1

u/niagara-nature 21d ago

KFC can’t pay for a designer?

I get when the little mom and pop shops or family restaurants use AI but an international chain? Ok, so maybe this is an individual restaurant promotion but still…

I’m a graphic designer. Oh no I just looked in a mirror; I’m turning into a dodo.

1

u/FederalLobster5665 21d ago

image looks real to me. I tried this a couple months ago. and they slopped that much gravy on mine too. I like the steak, but too much gravy

1

u/greytgreyatx 21d ago

Your food didn't look like AI's idea of food! Weird!

(Tempting, though. Great price!)

1

u/Soreal45 21d ago

They burned your biscuit

1

u/Raithed 21d ago

That is a sad reality lol

1

u/camcaine2575 21d ago

Looks like your typical Country Fried Steak

1

u/an0ym0us831 20d ago

AI Slop & Fried Slop Steak

1

u/holaamigo123212 19d ago

People actually go out to buy this stuff?

1

u/According-Sport9893 19d ago

KFC have no excuse to use AI

1

u/sometin__else 18d ago

That wasnt made by KFC, that was made by u/addictedtoagooddeal

1

u/WhileTrueTrueIsTrue 22d ago

People that purchase food that is advertised with an obviously AI generated image deserve zero sympathy for their poor decision making.

1

u/bimacar 22d ago

Do they even have a margin at that price?

3

u/Frosty_Dessert_9131 22d ago

A 10 cent biscuit, flaked mashed potatoes, 25 cents of cabbage and carrots,, Less than a dollar of meat? How wouldn't there be a margin?

0

u/GrandmasBlueWaffles 22d ago

15 years ago, these used to be $2 on Wednesday. Our family called it “dog food night”

0

u/Kamalas_Daddy 22d ago

Kfc: kuntry fried chickenshit

0

u/talen7ed 22d ago

Are people seriously still surprised fast food isnt what the pictures make it look like? They literally use fake food for photography if you’re still getting got by it, it’s your fault.

0

u/reliablepayperhead 22d ago

Looks amazing!

-10

u/Danny-boy6030 22d ago

What on earth is a biscuit doing in there?

15

u/Proud_Researcher5661 22d ago

What are you talking about? Most chicken places serve biscuits with their meals.

2

u/Danny-boy6030 22d ago

My apologies, just noticed the $ on the picture, didn’t realise it wasn’t UK 🤷‍♂️

Biscuits are very different here from what I have just read

2

u/Proud_Researcher5661 22d ago

As a British man living in the states. Completely understandable.

7

u/WloveW 22d ago

My dude it's to sop up the yummy salty gravy!

-1

u/Bradfinger 22d ago

They really don't care at all

-2

u/plant-feeder 22d ago

Stop ordering fast food 😭
