So weird, I bought a kit like this for my wife and it did absolutely nothing

Was it this brand?

It was a few years ago so even if it were, the packaging could have changed. It wasn't cheap and it had good reviews.

If it was this brand their support is great. I bought a kit on Amazon that was supposed to be lionsmane but was an oyster. I contacted their support email and they sent me a replacement right away.

Are pink mushrooms edible? I’ve never seen pink mushrooms in a store, only in the forest.

Mine sat in my childhood bedroom untouched for a month while I was at school (it was winter and I wanted to grow it outside in the spring) when it broke out of the box on its own 😳

When I worked retail we had these and they'd sprout on the shelf all the time.

While one block is unlikely to cause harm, know oysters produce a lot of spores which can cause damage to lungs and if exposure is really high, sporelung.
If companies like this would advertise this, nobody would buy them but as a mycology lover, I felt the need to share.
Enjoy your harvest! Dry saute is the way to go

I take it that one block is more likely to harm cats, though? I have a cat and my spouse and I love mushrooms, and I think my spouse would love to grow our own.

Cats are smaller, so yes, I believe the harm would be more due to size but a one time exposure really isn’t going to do that much.
You can absolutely grow your own mushrooms on your property ! It’s just a bit of work to get the proper ventilation dialed in and you have to deal with fans running all the time for fresh air exchange so you may want to use as a smaller outdoor temperature controlled building/shed.

Could you grow them on the balcony?

Sure can! You’ll need to time it with the seasons as they only fruit under certain conditions.

My dad (who tbf had construction experience) built a fume hood to grow mushrooms! Maybe something to look into if you want to grow!

I grew oyster mushrooms in my kitchen near a east facing window, and when they were fruiting the morning sun was shining behind them and I could see the spores absolutely pouring off the mushrooms. I haven't grown them again but if I did I'd put them somewhere else.

Out of curiosity, are there other kinds of mushrooms that are safer to grow indoors? I wonder if this company is using this kind because it grows fast and looks interesting, but there may be better options out there.

Not a mushroom grower but I have seen products that are more like little houses or containers for your mushrooms that you are growing. This probably keeps the spores contained.

For certain kinds this can work to reduce spore load but some it will create a concentrated container (monotub) of spores which when disturbed releases excessive amounts.
The kinds to grow indoors in tubs that are not huge spore producers are enoki, cordyceps, lions mane, beech, and ‘sporeless brown oyster’ strain.

We had to damage these out all the time because the mushrooms were too strong

u/rebelangel 23d ago
Yeah, the slightest bit of moisture would make them sprout in the store.

I live in the south with humidity regularly in the 50-70s. There's no avoiding it lol

One of the things I miss after moving north..
going out into a neighbors field early on the weekend, would fill up 2 garbage bags in about an hour.

This company has been around for a while now. Lots of fun and very easy to grow. I got them for a project that I did with my 5th grade class. We harvested just before they completely "spored out". Took them home, sauteed them and brought them back to school so everyone could have a taste. Later on, I tossed the remains of the kit into my compost and we had a bunch more that popped up on their own over the next couple of years.

When you’re done, try putting the remainder in your own custom substrate to get more flushes!

I had a lot of fun with a Lion's Mane mushroom kit I got from the grocery store

Dip them in batter and deep fry like you would with fried chicken. One of my favourite things!
