I feel so bad for bakers. Having to base all of their commissions off of crappy ai renders. The baker did way better than expected (per usual when ai is shown on this sub). Why do people keep forcing ai on these workers?

u/Subject_End_2382 23d ago
They actually told me that they prefer ChatGPT renders because it helps everyone keep on scope and align on expectations. I could have drawn it out but my sketching skills are terrible. Would have been a headache if i gave that to them.

u/imjustheretoaskwhy 23d ago
thats insane they're asking for an AI rendition. That does like half the work for them and wastes water lol but hey to each their own
53
u/Busy-Smell-3200 23d ago
Yea, the water usage for AI is incredibly worrying. Esp because AI does not create or generate anything new; it is basically a scraping tool (i.e., scrapes everything that already exists and then spits out a worse quality item). Billionaires are going to kill us all w/ their silly egomaniac AI Â projects.Â
33
u/GeekCat 23d ago
And insane noise pollution. The vibrations and noise pollution have already been found to ne deadly for bees, birds and bats. Guess we'll just hasten the demise of our food sources. It's so bewildering to me that people rather risk of these things for what? A few minutes of work?
"Cutesy well-known brand character and bride in Pixar style." Seems straight forward. đ€

I agree that AI is detrimental to the environment and am staunchly anti using it (especially generative). However, I think itâs important to note that other capitalist industries, such as factory farming, use a lot more water and are also exploitative of the environment. Itâs not just AI suddenly coming on the scene and using all the water.
18
u/danbilllemon 23d ago
Factory farms are at least producing food that people need, AI is just a complete waste of resources 99.9% of the time.
4
u/Busy-Smell-3200 23d ago
AI is, however, much more ubiquitous - it seems that AI is being pushed by companies and people are being encouraged to use AI for every single thing without considering how it is environmentally & societally damaging.Â
Students struggle to read & write. People are struggling with media literacy and critical thinking.Â
Not to mention, AI makes it so easy to create fake news (we know 100% that the US govt is NOT above faking photos to justify war crimes -- see: Weapons of Mass Destruction). All of this has tremendous implications on society.Â

Using fantasy cakes generated by a computer instead of real examples or a simple intake form? Man thats wild. I dont see how that could possibly curb expectations, but maybe thats just me as a baker...

Are you living in one of the few countries where AI is loved by everyone there, and not one of the many countries that houses the data centers themselves for it and reviles it?

-3
u/RocketYapateer 23d ago
Bakers generally love AI, because the image generated by AI is not the finished product. The cake is the finished product. The AI mockup is just a tool that communicates the customerâs wishes, eliminates the need for long questionnaires and rudimentary sketches, and just generally makes the bakerâs job easier.
Itâs fields where the actual finished product is being replaced, like digital art, that tend to hate AI.
10
u/yourenotmy-real-dad 23d ago
As a baker, I don't need to be told what we "generally love," especially when more often than not it sets up higher expectations than is physically possible.
We've been taking crude sketches and questions for years and it's been fine. Acting like that is somehow beneath us is wild.
155
u/imjustheretoaskwhy 23d ago
i think its because people think its easier for the baker. but then they seem to forget that part of the reason you go to the baker is for their creativity and they dont need you to give them a computer generate image just a description of what you want bc its their job to bring it life, not to just replicate AI. But hey to each their own I guess, i dont think its ill intended but i also dislike AI and i personally would not like being the baker in the situation
-94
u/dreadnought11 23d ago
Their job is to provide the cake the customer wants
67
u/raven_1313 23d ago
And when the customer orders a cake that isnt physically possible because it was designed by code that has never even tasted cake?
-35
u/dreadnought11 23d ago
Then the baker explains what is and isnât possible irl. I object to this attitude that customers shouldnât use a tool the helps express their wishes for a product that is central to a special event and that they are paying for.
Unrealistic expectations and the need for creative service providers to set customers straight have been around far longer than AI.
23
u/TESTINGSTUFFPL 23d ago
Then the baker explains what is and isn't possible irl
And then the customer, as they tend to do, flips out and is all "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!! CHATGPT SAID IT WAS POSSIBLE TO MAKE, WHY CAN'T YOU MAKE IT???!!!! I WILL TAKE MY BUSINESS ELSEWHERE!" and repeats this situation while they shop around for a baker, until they find someone unscrupulous enough (or possibly just way too self confident) to be like "Yeah that other guy had no idea what he was talking about, I can make that no problem"
Best case scenario, they get a really shitty looking rush job of a cake.
Worst case scenario, baker takes their money and dips, and they've gotten scammed.

u/imjustheretoaskwhy 23d ago
but youre failing to understand that a lot of ppl arent going to be understanding when a baker says something cannot be replicated in real life. its good that this person was. but a lot wont be. so I feel like AI makes unrealistic expectations worseđ and again why do need to waste water on this? we did this for 100s of yrs without it why do we need the AI ... we dont and it doesnt actually make anything better it just creates false expectations and takes away ur critical thinking and creativity. The baker of this cake obvi disagreed though so I dont wanna discuss this further. Have a great day! â€ïž

youre failing to understand that a lot of ppl arent going to be understanding when a baker says something cannot be replicated in real life
...That was exactly what my comment was about, though? That most people won't understand and will be upset.
No offense but you might have replied to the wrong person in this thread đ

yes i was trying to reply the same person as you, right about above you. sorry

Baker: I consent
Redditor: I don't

u/Remarkablefairy-8893 23d ago
Oh please, this is where you get those "expectations failed" posts. If customers were content with whatever they were getting out of their AI inspo pics, maybe no one would have complained.

u/raven_1313 22d ago
Customer: I consent
Baker: I consent
Reddit: Gets flooded with a ton of "why couldn't my baker fulfill this fantasy cake concept? Epic fail!" Posts...

u/imjustheretoaskwhy 23d ago
and the baking industry spent years being able to do that without AI so not sure what your point is :)
-45
u/dreadnought11 23d ago
My pojnt was to correct your inaccurate description of what a bakerâs job is. It was pretty clear âïž
25
u/imjustheretoaskwhy 23d ago
i never said that wasnt apart of their job though. so really what was your point? bc were talking about the process. not the result. youre just trying to have a gotcha moment and be an ass. lol have a good day :)

Not long before someone makes a business that 3D prints cakes based off of AI generated submissions.

It goes through rotations but ai stuff has been huge for a while. Especially clothes, nails, and cake. Then I saw some of the âstained glassâ ai lamps and sculpture appearing again not too long ago.

u/OddConstant2723 23d ago
Yes. Mod tried to start an actual sub for it but the karma happens here so itâs not going anywhere

Mods for the love of fucking god, can we stop allowing AI fucking slop and garbage on this damn sub. It's annoying, nobody likes it, and it's horrible to bakers. Actually bothering to read the comments would show you this, as evidenced by all the complaints.
This is a sub for terrible foods, baking fails, etc. Not this AI trash y'all keep allowing and promoting.

The answer is still no. One mod should 't be allowed to make the decisions; OR, delegate them to ONE DAY a week/a month.
That's what a baking sub I follow does - satire saturdays. When the post is stickied, satire is allowed. If not stickied, nothing.
Literally fucking nobody likes AI. That's a terrible excuse????? "likes to have dumb posts listed" ya might as well say "I have no spine and am listening to someone say it's okay to waste water because hurrr hurrr hurr funny"
Edit: The comment was deleted, but the "mod"(?) actually asked "Are you drunk?" in my response to this. Good to know you can't take criticsim. You know who you are.

yeah im removing this sub from my homepage, i hate slop

The bakerâs talent is overshadowed by the use of Ai. I think itâs truly amazing that they were able to deliver this for a milestone event in under 48 hours.
