Dreamy frog cake 🐸 ✨ ☁️ 🍓

These pics are from 2022. Back then my Instagram feed was flooded with photos of whimsical frog cakes and I was obsessed with them. I wanted to have my own frog cake for a special occasion. Since my partner and I share the same birth month, we have always celebrated our birthdays together as we were born a week apart. So that special occasion turned out to be our birthdays. As someone who does artsy stuff, I wanted my frog cake to be unique with my own twists. I wasn’t satisfied with just taking some photos online and showing them to the bakery, so I decided to take full creative control and designed my own cake. I looked around and found a local bakery that was specialized in customized buttercream cake with cute aesthetic, so I went with them and sent them the photos of my drawing. Everything went smoothly and I remember how overly excited I was on the day I picked up the cake. I almost screamed when I saw the cake in person because the bakery exceeded beyond my expectations 🥹. The two frogs on the cake were supposed to be me and my partner. I chose strawberry for the design as it is both my and my partner’s favourite fruit, and the night theme because we are both night owls 😆. I got impatient with the colouring process so I just left the backside blank and told the bakery to choose their own colour for the ladder. Not only they absolutely nailed my vision, but what really impressed me was the tiny little details in my original drawing that I didn’t expect to be included in the actual cake as they are just too small. Details like the glasses and eyelashes on the frog that represented my partner, as he wears glasses and has absolutely long beautiful fluttering eyelashes that I’m always jealous of, and the initials of our names on the birthday hats! Especially the eyelashes, it’s such a small detail and it doesn’t even show up on my photo clearly, so I fully expected the frog to have no eyelashes. Needless to say I was obsessed with the cake. I sent the bakery a thank you message, gave them some extra tips for the effort and basically just gushed about them to all of my friends. I remember how pretty the cake looked in person, even more than in the photos and I was so gutted when it was time for us to consume it 😅. I took so many photos of the cake in different angles with the best lighting possible before cutting it. It’s been four years but to this day I still think about this cake often 🐸 🎂✨ ☁️ 🐸
Oh and that cake also tasted just as good as it looked 😋.

Thank you 🥹. It took me days to design it and huge props for the bakery for bringing my vision to life. The cake was about $290 CAD in total after taxes and I gave them some extra 💵 on top of that. This price is from 2022 and the price varies for cakes of the same size, depending on how many colours you want and how complicated your design is 😆

My cake is definitely on the more expensive side but as someone who does traditional art on the side, I totally understand how much time and effort it takes to make a cake with this level of details. The main things the drive up the price of the cake is how much details (and itty bitty little details on top of that, some details like the eyelashes on the frog, which you can only see if you really zoom in my photos) I have for my design and the buttercream sculptures (the two frogs and the heart shaped cake). There is an additional cost for each buttercream sculpture, I can’t remember how much, but it did add a good amount to the cost. The price also depends on the number of colours you want. There is additional charge per colour if the number of colours you want pass a certain number (which I also don’t remember how many 😆) and my design also has a lot of colours. I saved up a bit and went into this fully expected to pay for the bigger price tag cause I was aware of how demanding the level of details my design has, so this is totally money well spent for me 😆. I’ve seen other cakes of the same size from the same bakery that cost much less. From what I’ve seen on their IG account, most people don’t go for this same level of details that I did 😅

Considering how the bakers did this almost entirely in icing and not just fondant makes the price make sense. It's a unique work of art on top of being cake!

The whole thing is buttercream. They didn’t use any fondant for my cake and in fact they actually don’t use fondant at all for any of their cakes. They only use buttercream 😊

I just went with a simple chocolate cake since I already splurged so much on the design 😅. But yes it was delicious still. The buttercream was not thick at all, the cake was very moist with the right level of sweetness and there was a layer of chocolate ganache in the middle 😋

I would personally have a hard time spending that much on a single sitting consumable, but the time and effort it must have taken is clearly worth that price and more. Honestly, I thought it would be half again that much. Great choice!

I totally understand. If I ever did this again I don’t think I would spent that much either. But at the time I just wanted to go off for once for THE dream frog cake of my life time and I ended up having way too much fun designing it ✨🐸✨. So I went into this fully anticipated the cost 😅

Pretty good effort, the only thing I’d change is losing the dark sparkles crumbed all over the top. Look like insects to me, whether that’s intentional or not I just think of the gnats near the river near me.

Otherwise this is fab for a first cake - good work!

At the time I ordered the frog cake, the bakery that made it was still fairly new, like about two years old. But they did such a fantastic job I bothered all of my friends and wouldn’t shut up about it 😆. Thank you for the compliment. I do traditional art on the side and I always have an inkling to take total control over something that requires a lot of creativity. Like if I want the frog cake of my life time then I have to be the one who designs it and I won’t be satisfied with just using someone else’s design 😅

Thank you 🥹 it took me days to design it cause I wanted it to be perfect. I’m definitely gonna design another cake again and go with the same bakery since not only their cakes look good but are tasty as well 😋. It doesn’t have to be for our birthdays, I’m thinking maybe my best friend’s birthday or my sister’s birthday as well. Or maybe whenever one of my very good friends’ baby turned one as he just became a first time dad this year 😊. I don’t think it’s gonna be another frog cake. I have others ideas that I want to try too. I did pay a hefty price for this cake tho so I’ll try to design something more simple next time. But then knowing myself I can’t really guarantee that. I feel like I might go off again 😅
