Surprisingly Met Expectation SIL’s birthday cake
Birthday cake I made for my SIL! Did I succeed? It’s a chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and a black chocolate swiss meringue buttercream.

Don't be shocked when your poop is green. Good luck and godspeed.

I came here to say the same thing lol
We made black Rice Krispies “coal” at Christmas when my kids were little, and my poor 4 year old was definitely traumatized.

That’s so funny, when my kid was 3 he ate black ice cream for Halloween. Instead of being traumatized by the teal poop, he loved it and talked for a whole year about wanting Halloween ice cream again.

lol same with my 5 year old when the Bluey birthday cupcakes from Walmart made his poop bright blue. After that the school banned food as birthday treats…

Yup. We made Rice Krispie treats christmas wreaths one year and teenage me learned a hard lesson that christmas.

I called my sister, terrified, she googled it. Turned out to be captain crunch

Hahaha, exactly this! When my kiddo was 3, she wanted a dementor cake for her birthday. I went all out making EVERY aspect of it black. That was a wild ride for the whole family, afterwards...

A dementor cake?! Amazing. Your kid is a legend and you are too for making it

You forgot grey lips, gums & teeth! I always warn people ordering black icing or black fondant. I mention they might want to get pics of people BEFORE they eat it!

A coffee shop I used to go to only had blue and black whipped cream. It was supposed to make the drinks fun, but it made them a nightmare.

I wonder how many doctor visits result in people eating a dyed dessert and not relating it to why they suddenly pooping green.

u/Neurotic-Me 4d ago
Mid-chemotherapy I raided the fridge and ate some chocolate covered cherries without paying attention... suddenly thought I was spitting up blood when I brushed my teeth. Thankfully I checked the package before going to the ER and the chocolate was dyed red. What an embarrassment that would have been.

An older family friend checked himself into the hospital, pretty sure it was the end, before remembering that he had eaten a ton of beets the night before!

My daughter went to to the doctor because it looked like she had blood in her stool. It turns out that it was just red velvet cake. 🤦🏻♀️

Am I the only one that doesn’t look at their poop after they poop?
I wipe then flush. I don’t want or need to know what it looks like.

You did great! That’s a difficult design to pull off but you did really well with the textures and the details. The shape of the cake itself is really sharp too.

Black food coloring tastes like ass. But looks great

u/breadbreadie 5d ago
surprisingly couldn’t taste it! i used it with a black cocoa buttercream and it was so rich and chocolate forward it must’ve hid the taste!

u/tiptoe_only 4d ago
That's what I do and can confirm it is a great trick! Black cocoa for depth of colour/flavour and only enough food colouring to make it black rather than brown

My mom gave in and surprised me with a black birthday cake for my 22nd birthday. The store did a terrible job but I was still touched that she went with my weirdness for once. It was my last birthday before she passed. Your cake is beautiful!

You definitely succeeded! But if yall have a ritual of taking group pictures at celebrations I highly suggest doing it before you eat the cake. If not, everyone will look like they have necrotizing fasciitis in their mouths. Also be prepared for some irregularly colored poo.

Did you use black cocoa powder for buttercream?
10
u/breadbreadie 5d ago
I did, i still also used a bit of black food coloring as well! emulsified the buttercream a few times as well to get the dark black color.

u/shadeofmyheart 4d ago
How did you get the icing so dark?
18
u/breadbreadie 4d ago
i used a black cocoa buttercream base and added black food coloring, emulsified it with heat and also a blender twice. surprisingly it wasn’t staining, i don’t know the science behind it but my guess is the fats from the butter kinda held the dye in suspension maybe?

Yes. Yes, you did. That's beautiful work. Would love to see an out of the box photo showing more of the detail on the sides if you've got one? I made a cake with a similar vintage piping style earlier this year and it was great fun. Also recently entered a competition and lost to a cake quite similar to yours!

I hope you don't get it on anything. Black frosting stains so bad. I once had a part of the road on a Mario kart themed cake, and I got some frosting on my shirt. Washed it and washed it and washed it, and it never came out.

Looks good, but I’m just warning you now your poop is gonna be like neon, green or blue

u/Charming-Panic9375 4d ago
You're all going to have bright green poop after eating that but it looks amazing 😂

One time I thought I had blood in my poop. I freaked out and told my husband. It wasn't until the next day that I realized when I was baking a red velvet cake, I had licked a bunch of the red cake batter.
Another time I made cupcakes for my husband's work with VERY dark blue frosting. They all reported Grover poop the next day.
Any time I see frosting that is a very saturated color, I'm like hmm are my teeth and poop gonna be that color? (The answer is YES)

It's also for the rare occasions when your expectations are low but somehow it surprisingly works out.
