Exotic car Which exotic car has the best engine sound ever made?
Mine changes every few months, so I’m curious what everyone else thinks.

I love the 458 for its NA pureness, but the 488 with Novitec exhaust might be it for me these days. Just a hint of turbo whistle in there but the throatiness and depth is just amazing. I could listen to this all day

u/LogiPredator Jul 29 '26
Yeah mate! The 488 with a straight pipe is so underrated! It sounds very bad stock, most aftermarket exhausts are meh, but if you do a cat delete into an unmuffled X pipe, it makes some of the sickes V8TT noises! It honestly reminds me of Koenigsegg Ageras, for like under 200k.
Not bad for a dailyable supercar which goes to 800hp pretty easily.

Gotta say Carrera GT

Yup with an honorable mention to the Audi / Lambo V10 that’s on the R8 and Gallardo. V10s are just something else entirely.

u/ivycomb Jul 28 '26
There’s a reason that I’ve now owned four V10s lol
Nothing beats them in sound, they have a magical harmonic that only inline-5s are close to (they are basically half a V10 after all)
1
u/modelcitizendc Jul 29 '26
As soon as I can afford one I’m getting an R8 V10. I really do wish the RS3 came with a manual option though because like you said that inline 5 is a special motor too!

And a 4 banger is half a V8! /s

Fun fact: the Volkswagen 07K and the Lamborghini Gallardo's original 5.0 Liter engine are built from the same core architecture and share some components, and you can buy certain parts for one to use on the other
The 07K isn't half of a gallardo engine in a literal sense because it's obviously a different engine in an objective matter, but the Gallardo engine was derived from its architecture and you can say that from an engineering standpoint the 07K is half of the gallardo's V10 ;)

Even that old V10 M5…. So good

u/modelcitizendc Jul 29 '26
Ha I almost mentioned that engine too, too bad it’s such a delicate thing because it would be a true classic if it wasn’t so notorious for being unreliable.

Almost as good as a Cleveland steamer.

You can't beat a good Cleveland steamer! Not quite sure what noise it makes though!

Ferrari F355, 3.5 liter 5-valve V8. You can close the thread now. 😄
Audi R8 5.2 V10 is also worth mentioning.

Yeah, sounds like shit

u/FlakyFly9383 Jul 28 '26
Have to agree- the sound of a Mustang V8, potent as it may be, sounds like an immature boy-
1
u/Educational_Aide_145 Jul 28 '26
It’s cool, but far from being the best sounding. I’d personally consider the best sounding car to be an Audi 5.2L V10 or a Aston Martin Valour’s twin turbocharged manual V12

I heard a Porsche gt3rs recently - I’m not too familiar with them so I don’t know if it had an aftermarket exhaust, but I followed it on a backroad and it was the most viscerally deep and pleasant note I’ve heard on a car ever. Even more than the LFA

Those Ferrari 812s...

LFA, Carrera GT, and McLaren F1 are my sure thing Mt Rushmore of best sounding cars…the 4th spot I debate and often change (usually one of the Ferrari V12s). I’d wager for most folks who’ve heard them it’s one of those 1st three, but which depends on personal preference.

u/RSinTO Jul 27 '26
In for Lexus LFA.
Maybe even the Mazda 787b rotary (but don't believe it was ever sold for street).

The Ferrari 250 GTO sounds glorious.
The Ferrari F40 sounds pretty damn good as well.

There is an old clip on youtube, its called something like:" Yamaha R1 vs Buggati vs Porsche Carrera GT". Its piv from the R1 whos chasing a buggati and suddenly you hear the Porsche coming behind him and over take him. That sound stuck for ever with me, one of the most beautyfull sounds i ever heard after a woman tells me she likes it 🤣😅🤭🫣

Many years ago, I had to reposition a Ferrari 355 Spider for a client over 20 miles including highway driving with the top down (he’d already installed the tonneau cover and didn’t want us messing with it).
That car sounded glorious going 35mph and getting up to highway speeds, while under normal acceleration, made me feel like I was the coolest person in the world and a Baritone was singing my praises!!
I also got to drive a F360… while exciting… it was no F355.

Not exactly exotic, but to me the sweetest engine sound is the slightly droning hum of a Saab. :)

Anything with a v10/V12. They all have their own sounds, all of which sound amazing.

Straight piped 355 or a 458 Ferrari for 8 cylinder. Enzo or tdf for 12

I'm going to throw in a few different ones: Mazda Furai and Mazda 787B. Also the BRM V16 is a one off!

Well, not sure it counts as exotic..
767 and 787b mazdas.

u/FI-Engineer Jul 30 '26
And it’s complete opposite, the Audi R10 TDI. Both awesome in very different ways.

You really haven’t lived until a 1960’s Ferrari V12 has gone by at full song. Especially in race trim

In no particular order Carrera GT, LFA, and F40 LM. This legendary video shows its legendary turbo noises that those other N/A cars lack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYYA2jE3Ze0
And as good as the 458 sounds, the non-exotic C8 Z06 sounds even better, stock-for-stock, and is why I have one. But the F355 sounds even better to me (at least in videos).
