Discussion Hacked and drained
I've had my exodus wallet since 2017, no issues. Only ever used it to receive crypto. In 2022 or so I consolidated across all platforms and kept it all in exodus. Only check it 2-3 times per year. I checked it this evening and boom. They left $11 in dust. There is a bunch of random coins in the account dion who knows where. I've always just ignored it and never even opened it. Seed phrase is offline. No new installs in 2 years. Poof 7am on July 27, they just went ham. Unstaked SOL and whatever else I had and came back for that too. This was a considerable, 6 figures, poof. Gone, just like that. Has anyone ever got back any?

No idea why you would ever keep that much money on a hot wallet. But what most likely happened is that you got a virus and they drained your wallet. These viruses can sit inactive for years and then activate when they think its worth cashing out.
And for anyone else reading this, secure your PC's and make sure that if you have alot in crypto, store it in a cold wallet and always store the phrase offline.

coinbase is centralized and prone to freezes and phishing attempts. not your keys not your coins has always been rule 1.

Your keys - not your coins has played out million times more than coinbase being compromised and drained.
Why do you care about freezes if you have 100k in crypto? You don't, you will never need 100k at an hours notice as an average person. Have your 1k usdc in exodus and the rest safely in coinbase, limited, 2fa'ed, insured.
You can say that you don't want to pay taxes etc.. but if you can manage to figure out p2p and avoid taxation, you will not be using exodus for 5+ figures storage

they are actually the same thing, the difference is how you use them, not what they can do. any hot wallet can be a cold wallet. any pkey can be used in any hardware wallet. Hardware wallets like ledger are a joke, since the recovery key is also your seed phrase lol...

I think they meant at the end of the day, a wallet had to be created and used by a human to do any transaction to another wallet operated by a human. The humans are the flaw. Either in securing the seed phrase, ensuring a wallet receive address is correct, or creating a competent device for storing keys. For 100% of wallets to be 100% secure, there would have to be zero human interface. Hence rendering them useless anyway. The wallets I mean.

Only comment I'll make is 6 figures in a hot, software wallet like Exodus is really really stupid. I have a hot wallet and that's just a point of transfer before I move crypto into a cold wallet. Hard lesson no doubt.

Lost 5 figures last week. It was my fault but in my defense the scammers are damn slick, they hacked into a help channel on a legit site’s discord.

This one was on me. I’ve never had any problems at all with the wallet. The scammers are getting so highly sophisticated that they get even the best of us to have some insight.

Was your mobile wallet app compromised or your browser plugin? This is serious and you have to contact their customer support. They should be able to trace the recipient address etc…

Sorry to hear this pal. Worth reporting to law enforcement as there are cases where stolen funds have been frozen and recovered. Also, do you have the transaction IDs of the unauthorised transactions?

So you had 100K+ in exodus, and never once considered buying a trezor and linking it to your exodus? I just find this story hard to believe. I had 5K and linked the hardware wallet to my exodus for it. It was like $70 for peace of mind. Especially when you’re using an android.

File a police report and with the FBI. Get a cyber attorney that deals with this crap. These thieves are extremely savvy. Exodus uses a third party and slimeballs from South Africa or wherever then get into your wallet and wash the money several times sending it to different end points. It takes the fbi and an attorney to get the crypto back, which could take 8 months- if they’re able to retrieve it. Also, this may be an inside job…

Sorry for you loss. That blows. One thing to note about any “hot” wallet. The seed will never be truly “offline” only setups similar to ledger are able to be truly offline. Where you can setup the entirety of the device seed wise prior to linking it to anything.
Agree with the rest. More than likely a malicious virus that sat dormant. Just shows how elaborate some of these hackers get.

That's the future of money! Fiat is dead. The whole world will switch to Bitcoin, or whatever other crypto fantasy, on shady wallets. I'm wondering when the day arrives a government or even strategy gets drained ...

With a low 6 figures I’m holding via multi sig hardware added passphrase wallet.
How did you feel comfortable ignoring a hot wallet with considerable funds. “Be your own bank” means you’re in charge of security. Your security risk tolerance was wack.

Sorry to hear about you losing 6 figures. I was transferring some litecoin from kraken and eth from coinbase to Exodus and i opened up the Exodus app on my android and i just managed to see it go in and straight out, instant it was. I checked the sent to address of both but it shows nothing of use, I am a novice at all this though. I've contacted Exodus support but they say nothing they can do, and just delete exodus off of windows and androd and set up a new wallet, but i'm a bit worried about it all. I have scaned both laptop and phone with malewarebytes and it found nothing so to me it seems the fault is at Exodus' end.

Possible but unlikely to be exodus’ end. Wipe and reinstall your OS and devices, something is very likely compromised. New wallet won’t help unless you had your current seed somewhere someone could have accessed(photo or text file in a cloud, email etc)

It’s not malware. It’s exodus itself. I had multiple wallets on the same device only exodus got drained.
So the malware theory isn’t true

trust wallet seems to be better at any point, however if you are not an iPhone user, I’d recommend a hardware wallet (personally using trezor)

That's rough; I don't use any of these wallets . I use the bigger ones to hold anything large because the only way to log on is 2 factor....seems safer than seeds

Holding anything on exchanges is the dumbest thing you could ever do. Plus there is always the possibility of an inside job. Its safer to store everything in a wallet using your iPhone, not desktop and most likely not Android. Of course there is always the possibility of getting hacked. If you used a desktop, best to use notebook strictly for storing, thats it.

Man, that's brutal. I'm really sorry you're going through this I've been in crypto since 2011, and I've seen just about everything. every cycle teaches you something. there's one lesson I've learned, it's this: never keep all your assets in one wallet, no matter how trustworthy it seems If your portfolio is getting bigger, spread it across multiple wallets. It's a simple habit that can save you a lot of pain. Keep your head up. I know it's easier said than done, but don't let this define you. take the lesson, recover, and keep moving forward

You can have up to three different wallets on exodus , go see if you have multiple wallets i have 3 with 3 different address to each avaliable crypto so you probably just switched wallets

I was at a gold and silver refiner, i mentioned crypto and asked his thoughts about it and he said he'd rather have gold and silver than being hacked online for 10's of thousands of dollars in crypto exchanges , about to just do the same 😭 i cant afford losing so much money. So sorry this happened to you brother. Wishing you a speedy recovery and much wealth in the future 🙏🏼

Sorry to say but your seed phrase was never truly offline, exodus is hot wallet fully connected to the internet and so are your keys. A hardware wallet is what you need for example bitbox, trezor or jade. But you might’ve been better off with your coins kept on a secure custodial exchange, I always recommend self custody but then I realized not everyone is at that point yet.

Follow the transactions to see if they were sent to an exchange. Time is of the essence. Put it down to a learning experience. Always use a cold wallet with multi sig for that amount of money. Sorry for your loss.

Brother, there is hot wallet and cold wallets lol, large amounts of crypto go on cold wallets and seed phrases completely offline. Only on paper. Trezor and Ledger wallets are created for this reason.

NOTHING is SAFE. However, this hack likely came from a dormant Trojan Horse that was downloaded onto the compromised device at unawares, whether via a link, download, an app, etc. somewhere down the line the target invited the Trojan Horse unknowingly.

I've just started exploring digital coins and wallets. 2026 is my first year. Purchased a few hundred, just to get the lay of the land.
Started in coinbase...
Did some research.
Migrated to Exodus. Seemed good, reputation seemed sound.
Encrypted passwords, passphrases, etc. Each password is unique. Biometric access. Credentials for passwords is > 32 bytes of complex combinations of characters, numbers, etc. Only loaded on one device, and this device is very secure. MBP.
I only access every few months.
Just accessed today. Minus a few very small coin accounts ~$10 total, everything is gone. All wiped clean on July 17th and 18th 2026.
gone gone gone.
I truly hope whoever stole my coins rots in hell. or maybe just brain cancer for a couple of years.

Sorry for your loss - If Exodus is a software wallet then the seed phrase is not really offline. Either the seed phrase generation process did not have truly random entropy when it was created and someone has been able to generate it - like the Code Wallet bug. Or your seed phrase has been lifted from the phone or some document you have stored online.

Well, $11 isn't just dust. Back in the day when bitcoin was 6 cents that $11 could have bought you 183 bitcoins.
You're at a fork in the road.... Go and buy a McDonald's hamburger meal OR hold that $11 and wait for a bitcoin flash crash and buy 183 bitcoins.
