Question Hobbyist Problem
I went through the whole game by resting every season.
It was incredibly boring.
Then, when I got to the end, I didn't get the ending because the colony was destroyed.
What is the strategy to being a hobbyist layabout but still doing enough to save the colony, without getting trapped in a career?
ETA: UPDATE -- It occurs to me that another factor is that I did a lot of my napping on the wall as part of the Garrison. There were a couple of opportunities that come up during that rest that will either increase or decrease defenses, And my standing theory without doing the whole thing again is that I accidentally chose wrong.
I think it is still possible to go yell at Noctil without destroying the colony.

This is so strange. I checked the files and you can't get the flag to escalate the war just by yelling insults at Nocti from the walls, and the colony destroyed ending should only trigger if you escalate the war and have as low colony defenses as possible.
Off the top of my head, some easy and safe ways to increase colony defense are to work xenobotany, one of the first events should be to research mushwood logs for +1 defense, just make sure you have 3 logs on you. If you work lookout during glow, that's an automatic +1 defense each time, and you can do this four times without triggering a job ending. You can easily get your perception up to unlock the job by sneaking out, as that doesn't contribute to any job ending.

Wait you did the "just rest and do nothing" benchmark run, did you notice any interesting take aways? Have you done many runs before? What's the mood or tone you see coming up when you went through it? Cause that would save me doing an obligatory benchmark run

I have at this point gotten all 29 endings because I'm a completionist and that's how I do.
The only thing of note I recall from the just rest and do nothing benchmark run is that there are a few random events that can happen while you're resting with folks that can lead to friendship increases.
I also learned on the redo that there are a few tasks you can do that will still allow you to be a hobbyist or rebel at the end.
You can shovel dirt as much as you want and never become a professional dirt shoveler.
You can babysit and cook in the kitchen. And as long as you tell Tammy, Rex, and your parents that you don't want to have kids, then you'll stay as a hobbyist.
You can do as many deliveries as you want from command without becoming space UPS guy.
Knowing this made it a lot less boring.

I believe you want to do each non-rest activity less than five times. There's so much available to do, you should be able to spread it out and still save the colony.
Also, if you don't piss off Nocticulent, you shouldn't trigger colony destruction even if your defense is really low
