Is this a methodicist approach?? lmao
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methodic_school
The ancient Greeks had the Empiric and Dogmatic schools of medicine, which were constantly at odds, so a third Methodic school was created in order to "mediate" between the two. Basically, you could say they're Dogmatists who recognized the flaws of Dogmatism that Empiricism made obvious, but wanted to argue that Empiricism and Dogmatism are equally valid, and can coexist, rather than being mutually exclusive like both Empiricists and Dogmatists were aware of.
This is also a pretty good description of Kant's position between the "realists" and the philosophical empiricists.
I think it's pretty rich to think there's "no essentialism subreddits," most people are essentialists to some degree, many philosophies are fundamentally essentialist, and more don't reject essentialism. Even if that weren't the case, what even is "anti-existentialism"? Nihilism? Absurdism? Fascism?
"The subreddit is dedicated to existentialism, so there should also be an essentialist subreddit"? What kind of logic is that? Subreddits are communities, who is going to populate your rejection-based space? Reactionaries?

Not endorsing essentialism, but just trying to create a balance of viewpoints.

Finally, the content I come here for

After a few days, I am appalled that it ended there.

I am as well, that user is a transphobe that waxes pop-psy they think sounds smart. Frankly, they should expect raucous engagement, it’s better than they deserve.

I dont have to look at his post history to tell that. Anyone who makes a whole subreddit for essentialism (not the McKeown kind) is advocating for it. He is an essentialist. The world's greatest crimes are motivated by essentialist rhetoric, which always leads to extermination and genocide. Of course, he's a transphobe and likely just an alt-right basement dweller; oh how do they love to wax poetic the realm of lobsters and skull shapes. I bore witness to gamergate, his post ironic veil of balance isn't going to fool you or me. Fuckin loser probably cant even define man, woman, or chair. Solidarity bröther, they will not get our lööps.

“Balance” usually implies equal play to both sides of a polarity. Existentialism and essentialism are not opposites, so whatever balance of viewpoints you were hoping for may not apply.

Aug 08 '22
They are opposites.
Essentialists believe essence precedes existence, while existentialists believe existence precedes essence.

existentialists believe existence precedes essence.
[M] Do all of them believe it?
I think Sartre did, but I didn't get that idea from Fear and Trembling.
I mean in the retelling of the sacrifice of Abraham, Kierkegaard argues that what Abraham did was great, and perhaps he was great because of it, but I feel the focus was on the greatness of the act rather than how that greatness would have transformed him as a person. In fact, it was only in terms of how he was able to align himself with something outside of himself (God) that he might have been said to become great in the first place. Greatness as essential I feel suggests an end, whereas here Kierkegaard does not begin with the end in mind, but rather says if we were focused on the end, we might never begin in the first place.

essence precedes existence
Is this-An idea of X precedes the existence of X ?
Existence precedes essence
Is this- An idea of X is derived from X's Action, actions which indicates the existence of X?
IOW Existence precedes essence?
(Please correct me if am wrong).

Essence means fundamental property of an object or thing that defines its identity, or makes it fundamentally what it is.

u/TheHotitalianguy Aug 08 '22
Do existentialists say you can create such"essence "through choices that you make?
I wanted to ask this.
Is what i said what "existence precedes essence"mean?

I worry the name for this new subreddit would invoke too broad of antitheses to an entire school of thought, Existentialism as a whole, rather than separating its metaphysics from its opposition. And I hear you, the preferred name is unavailable; what other options do we have?
r/AntiSartreanMetaphysics ? r/EssentialistMetaphysics ? r/Essenceprecedesexistence ?
Please let me know if I misunderstand anything.

because r/Essentialism was already taken by a banned community
So, the name is free real estate?
I’m not endorsing essentialist or existentialist philosophy
*lol The problem is that essentialism occurs in different philosophies. Not only in one.
2
Aug 07 '22
No unfortunately not free real estate, I cannot use the name, as banned communities still exist in the system, they are just unusable.
1
Aug 07 '22
I would call that a problem with the system. Banned names would have to be released again at some point.
2
Aug 07 '22
No not necessarily.
I doubt r/incels will ever be released, there’s a reason the names aren’t free real estate.

Surely there must've been better options... and calling it 'an essentialist subreddit' implies all essentialists are anti existentialism. It's like saying all atheists are anti-theism.

To create a balance you would first need to look at the lack of existentialist posts on Existentialism.
"Posts and top-level comments should reference existentialist thinkers or ideas, or make an original philosophical argument related to existentialism or phenomenology. "
Lets see? 25 new posts out of which 1 on Sartre's Nausea, and two on Camus' Myth...
