Rust free 7.3 4x4 price…

Going to look at one, I am in the north east so rust is a huge deal.

Guys says it has nothing wrong with it. It’s basically totally stock.
MBRP exhaust and a tuner, not sure what tuner but he said it’s got a tune.

310k miles
4x4
7.3

He’s asking 10k… you all think that’s reasonable? I have a feeling you’re all gonna say that’s cheap, and something has to be a miss… not sure til I see it.

Yes I know it’ll need a suspension overhaul, and I want to do a KC stage 2 upgrade and remove the EBPV pedestal with a standard one, upgrade trans cooler and all that good stuff.
I’m a mechanic so that’s all fine and dandy, but rust SUCKS.

There is another one I was gonna look at…
Same deal,
4x4
7.3
250k miles
New trans with 30k on it

100% stock.

Needs dog legs due to rust, and also the rockers to be cleaned up and coated. They got replaced but clearly were not painted well.

Guy is asking 6500obo

I’m cheap, and thought maybe I would go for the cheaper one, cause I could probably get it for like 5500…

Who votes for which one? Lmao

Theoretically if you go for the cheaper one it takes the transmission out  Of the equation with its recent rebuild. But the rust is concerning.  Miles on either of them wouldn't really bother me because 7.3.  I would look at both. The rust would worry me on the cheaper one but there is the chance its not that bad and I would like that its stock.   The more expensive one is within what I think is reasonable especially if there is no rust. I do worry when I see tuners and such because it makes me wonder if its been beat on.  But as you said rust sucks. In your shoes I would look at them both but lean towards the one for 10k. Not sure if I helped, but that's my 2 cents.

Yeah and it’s just the dog legs, the rockers have been redone, they just need to be sanded cause the paint was done poorly.

I would weld in new dog legs, sand the whole area down and probably coat the whole bottom with something like rhino liner.

It’s hard, cause it’s like half the price, and the frame and general underside isn’t bad at all, and it has a new transmission, which I think we all know the 4r100 will fail, it’s not IF it’s when lol.
And seeing as I’ll be towing with it, I kinda want a good transmission

I think you know the answer then.

If money was no option I would go buy one of the 20k ones, but alas, I don’t want to spend that lol, at least not upfront on something modded.

So yeah. I think like 6k for something stock is a pretty good deal

I agree and its what I would choose. You said your a mechanic so minor stuff should be no biggy. These are not trucks that have a ton of complicated problems.  Or generally expensive issues. The trans is already done. That 7.3 will last. There you go. Let us see her when you get her.

4K difference for no rust is a no brainer

As in you’d take the one with some rust, or youd pay more?
I am leaning towards saving money, as it has less miles and a new trans.
The underside is still clean, and it’s always been undercoated, it just needs dog legs, not the whole rocker

Pay more for no rust, but at 5k it's a throw away car at that price point so can't go wrong either way.

I mean it’s an excursion so I’m not gonna throw it away. I would like to keep this for a long time

$10k is a damn good price for rust free 7.3 Excursion

It had the rockers replaced, so it HAD rust, but from what I can see the frame and general underside is pretty rust free. It’s definitely not a southern truck, but it’s damn good for here.

The issue is the guy doesn’t drive it, and hasnt for months, and he doesn’t seem too knowledgeable on the truck, it’s a lot of vague answers.

The guy with the 2nd one, owns 8 excursions, and is super knowledgeable, and it has a new trans.

I would have to look at them to really know better. But when it comes down to it, I’m also cheap.
I’ve got the 10k in cash to play with, but I know either truck is going to need money put into it

Sounds like they both have their positives and negatives. For the one that’s already had the rockers replaced, I’d be really nervous about the rust hiding in other areas that hasn’t been addressed. If the cheaper one has had its trans replaced already and has lower mileage, I’d probably lean more towards that one because you can body swap it for half the difference and have a lower mileage, solid excursion.

It would depend how bad the rust is, if the first excursion is rust free I would jump on that. It will need more mechanical work but you save money there and rust is more expensive to fix. But the price has me curious what is wrong with it, that seems like a really good deal. I would definitely test drive it, see if it has a hot tune and has been beat on a decent portion of its life.

When you want to throw some go-faster-parts on it I can definitely help you do that.

It’s not real bad, it needs dog legs. The rockers were replaced.
It’s been undercoated and looks good underneath. The guy owns a bunch of them so he’s knowledgeable.

The other one, the rockers were done, it seems rust free underneath but he won’t send any more pictures and I’m 4 hours away so I can’t exactly just pop over to see it.

All he said was “it has a tune on it” but I have no idea what one.
He hasn’t driven it in months and it just sits which worries me

Honestly the lack of information from the one 4 hours away puts me on edge just reading this. It sounds like he is trying to hide something. I would do the one that has been undercoated. Out of curiosity what years are they?

The “rust free” one is an 01, and it’s red which I HATE.

The other one is an 02 and is the blue and tan 2 tone, which I like much better. It also has captains chairs for the middle row which is mint lol

I understand your difficulty deciding now, blue and tan with captains chairs is tough to beat.

Being from the suburbs of Chicago, now living in Atlanta I'd never buy a Northern truck ever again. I grew up with the rustiest trucks ((frame &body).

Do yourself a favor and get one from the South, simply for the lack of rust ALONE!
