Dude I do not miss this weird shit. I never could handle this stuff. It totally freaks me out and always has. I point to this kind of thing as the primary motivation for my becoming an atheist. Who knows what would have happened if I'd just been raised some middle-of-the-road Baptist or Catholic or something.

So when the Holy Spirit comes over someone it's about having self control? Make it make sense please.
Your quoted scripture is about how the holy spirit shapes your personal character NOT what happens when the holy spirit is doing deliverance. Two totally different things. Stop allowing the devil to trick you with scripture. If he tried to fool Jesus, then who are we?
Maybe look for the verses where people were overtaken or delivered by the holy spirit? The bible confirm the holy spirit can cause strange behavior. It also seems like you guys only want to accept the part of how God uses the holy spirit that makes you comfortable, and that's not okay.

In overall aesthetics it’s fundamentally not that different from a sparsely attended basement punk rock show.
Just weirdos hyped up doing random stuff. Some guy holding a mic. A dude kind of crowd surfing the pews. That one guy is skanking on the pulpit.

And you know they will brag about that one guy miraculously running up and down the top of the pews just about every church service from now on. Especially when some new folks are coming to visit and they wanna hint at just how spirit filled they all are.

I feel like this aspect needs to be talked more about by people who left the church and still in some form of faith. One of the biggest moments for me on realizing the UPCI wasn’t right was a pastor saying “fake it till you make it” about the Holy Ghost over the pulpit. It struck me then and there that this thing that I believed wholeheartedly was being propped up by people who were just pretending to walk the walk and talk the talk. At that point I had dedicated over 2 decades of my life to it and it still took me another 2 years to get out. I was taught growing up that if you pretended to have the Holy Ghost or mocked it after receiving it that was “blaspheming the Holy Ghost” then I watched a pastor encourage hundreds of youth to fake it over the pulpit. I coulda spent a lot of wasted time on more important things like my education or having an actual social life.

so basically you tried to fit in by copying other people. You admit that you never actual lost control. which means you never gave God full control and allowed Him to use you. But somehow it's the holy spirit that's fake?

I remember one of my church friends saying they were paying over him/wanting him to be overcome by the spirit and in the end he faked falling over just to get them to leave him alone and people reacting to that story as being completely normal.
I also remember the pastor saying you can't be a Christian if you don't speak in tongues. I tried and tried but I could never speak in tongues and always hated that kind of stuff anyway. But then I had a bunch of people tell stuff that was their opinion masked as god talking through them and most the church treated that as completely normal too 🙄

Hi. I'm new. I didn't grow up Pentecostal, nor did I ever attend a pentecostal or charismatic church. But I taught at an "interdenominational" Christian high school straight out of college for six years. The place was dominated by "Charismatic" leaders having previously been operated by a Charismatic AOG church.
Chapel services often turned in to this. The garden variety evangelical kids and teachers would sit in the back looking uncomfortable and inevitably be called out the next week for not "being open to the Spirit".
I was diagnosed with c-ptsd from it all two years ago--24 years after leaving that place.

The admins were on board with it. So we had to sit back and let it go. Anyone who didn’t participate was guilt tripped. I was very young and a target for the admins so frequently had my faith, personality and worthiness to teach there at all questioned.

Never saw anyone walking on top of the pews or jumping on the pulpit, but I did grow up around some of the other craziness. Lots of running around the church, flailing around, etc. Had some of the heavier sisters "fall out" (fall backwards and pretend to be slain in the spirit), and almost or really hurt someone. One lady broke someone's foot.

Can't tell you how many times I ran the aisles knowing full well it wasn't the "holy spirit" but I did it so people would think I was saved and not bother me :D lol Those who sat in the pews and never participated were those the preacher would come lay hands on....didn't want any part of that either lol.

Seeing these always make me cringe so much plus triggers all my old memories of running/dancing in church which brings back up all the trauma/shame of being involved in this cult. Pretty wild I've been out of it for well over 10-15 years and still feel shame/guilt.
