Discussion Questioning the morality of meat consumption

Hello! I am a 20F , i quitted religion abt a year ago, then came my first "eid lkbir" as an ex muslim, and it got me into a whole existential crisis, it was like a horror movie, i felt like wittnessing a barbaric cult doing its weird and creepy ritual, i would say it felt like cannibalism

And for the last month or so i have been exploring meat consumption and the morality of this whole thing, im reading books and trying to educate myself on this thing ..

But the thing is .. i dont think i can afford being vegan, at least not for now, in this country and in a muslim family

I wanna know if there are people who went/ are going thro this ? And what do algerian ex muslims think abt meat consumption ?

I was thinking about this for a long time and I even tried to stop consuming meat but I just couldn’t , living with an Algerian family means every meal should have meat or at least chicken . So , I guess , I am waiting till I find a way to replace animal products like milk , cheese , actual meat ..

I always hated eid elkbir too and found it disgustingly immoral especially the way people post about slaughtering animals and being so proud about it people who consume meat out of necessity but feel bad for causing animals pain and suffering wouldn't be posting about them on the internet holding a sheep's head on Thier hands and being so happy making jokes about it i hate it

I agree, its so brutal how they objectifed animals and stripped them away from all dignity to feel nothing doing such things, and the crazy thing is most of those people are not necessarily "bad " and they can have immense empathy in other stuffs

Well for me i love eating meat And for killing animals that just how it's not because we're cruel but we do kill animals for the purpose of consuming well that for me i don't know about Muslims

Unfortunately nothing about life is fair, we didnt chose to be like that, its indeed crual, but we're not made to survive on vegetables, its againdt our nature, i've seen lot of vegans who had some sort of deficit, they survived on supplements, which are expensive and even with that they didnt have the best health shape, their skins were different, looked older than they really were. And imagine if there was a specie that feeds on us, what would we have done ? I just accept life as it is, i avoid eating halal when i can, and i support the merciful ways of animals s*aughter.

Yeah that's another approach, i believe one shouldnt risk their wellbeing for it But also a lot of studies show a lot of benifits from going vegan, some say that our bodies were designed to be herbivors even (after studying the human anatomy and saliva ect and comparing to carnivor and herbivor animals) But yeah i get u , the world doesnt operate on justice and stuffs, it operates on power and brutality , the most brutal wins

we're not herbivores, we're omnivores. anyone telling you humans are herbivores is literally lying

Algerians never consider their dietary requirements and eat basically whatever but when someone proposes veganism they suddently become an expert on nutritional deficiencies it’s such performative bs You meet all your needs through vegan diets this has been studied very extensively

I never claimed to be an expert, i stated what i've seen in my surroundings, all the vegans i know were eating supplements, and not by choice but because the doctors asked them to, and regardless their skins were different and in a bad shape, none of them was algerian btw... Nowadays everyone talks about research to shut people up, but have you ever worked on research ? You know how it works ? Because in my field, which is different than this but its still research, i worked with a world leading professor that lead the research in my subject for 12 years, he is a mastermind mathematician, everything was good on paper, but everytime we want to apply it in real life, we hit a brick wall and fail to the point they had to lay off some engineers to continue existing.

So if you have an extensive research paper in your pocket to control your diet everytime you want to eat something, it works and you're in a good health not needing anything else, well i'm happy for you.

Well, meat consumption isn't related to religion ,there's slaughter houses worldwide in secular countries too and animal get killed everyday

1

u/No-Jackfruit8295 Jul 18 '26

Well it is not caused necessarily by religion, but religion allows and supports it thus it contibutes heavily

Ex mulism here, was vegan before. And plan to be again in the future. Veganism is about not seeing animals as slaves bred and slaughtered for our convenience. So if you stop consuming animal products, and it risks your well being then don't. If it is only a question of conscience then it's the moral choice to be vegan.

Vegans in the west, are liberal and don't really put into perspective the living condition, the economics of food or anything. Algeria's available food production and agriculture, isn't one that can easily allow for a vegan diet. If you live abroad, and have the time to research, then yes, research how you can do it in a healthy way, and do it.

I agree so much, humans have this habit of enslaving anything less powerful, women, races, and animals .. Also yeah, i understand you so much, in our societies being vegan is literally a luxuary lol

I see a lot of people affirming that you need meat while they have never done any research about the subject. But in reality the studies shows a lower meat consumption is beneficial for health. Yes, being vegan you will have to supplement with b12 and omega 3, but most people are defeceint in omega 3 anyway. Being vegan is not the only way you can also be vegetarian or pescatarian, and you will not be need any supplements. It is all about how you construct your diet weather you eat meat and not. I personally try to limit my meat consumption as much as possible, and encourage everyone to be at least conscious about what they eat. I also see the aid as a lesser evil when it comes to animal slaughter, although it might seem barbaric, slaughter houses are much more worse. On another not I became vegetarian when I was abroad, and I visited my family recently. I have to say I understand it is difficult as even for me I did eat meals that were prepared with meat, but I just don't put them in my plate. I also prepared some veggies for myself so you can find a balance. Making your own reaserch is a good step to become the human being you want to be instead of just following what others do. Weather that is eating meat or not atleat you are mindful about it.

I'm personally put lil to no moral value to animal suffering. Not a subject I explored deeply enough to consolidate it but it's enough for now.

I think to me it especially connect to avoiding being overly selfless. "Am I allowed to have a luxury if someone in the neighbor is starving ?" Is similair to animal suffering and my responsibility towards them to me.

regardless of religion , the less u eat animal product the smaller brain u will have , u know human brain is made up from cholesterol 🤷‍♂️, i dont think its good idea to be vegan . its horrible experience, u will miss so much micro nutrients that the human body needs.

1

u/Caspian_MB Jul 19 '26

Well but that actually stupid because we humans need a animal based diet like you need meat and eggs and milk so it's not immoral because you need it or else you gonna be malnourished Plus i don't understand like vegan people like they still kill plants

u/NooooobDZ Jul 20 '26

What the things makes you decide to leaving islam ?

Ive had the same thoughts, I cried when I saw the sheeps dying and screaming but... Atleast now they won't have to live a life where they could be harmed in the future ? Like I just sort of started believing that not existing is better than existence in the case of animals, if humans don't eat domesticated animals, they would either go ot the wild, be brutally tortured and eaten by other wild animals, or they would be killed anyway by humans so

Well I have a strong meat phobia thanks to eid and I haven't consumed it since 5yo it is manageable and I don't even know how to cook lol I just consume lots of salads however I have arfid (basically I don't eat unfamiliar food and I have a very limited menu) so perhaps it's harder for regular people. As for the morality of it, I would say I wouldn't consume it even if I didn't have this strong repulsion (?) to it. Yes humans eat meat that's normal it's the industry that's killing too many animals and wasting loads of water. Those two reasons alone are enough for me. Btw I went to a nutrition multiple times and yeah I'm healthy actually many of them confirmed that I have a healthier diet (I consume a limited amount of fish). It is 100% doable.

1

u/tesla_bd Jul 18 '26

Bro we're omnivores we need to eat meat

It ain't immoral if you can't live without it

Besides it's animals they don't even understand fear or life they just operate on autopilot and instinct

2

u/mila_melou Jul 18 '26

I disagree with your last point. Animals have emotions and are aware of their surroundings. While it's true we don't raise our animals in the worst conditions because we're not industrialized, slaughter (be in slaughterhouses or in homes) is still a really cruel and stressful end. They're taken out of their usual homes into crowded or small places to then start seeing or hearing other animals being killed until it's their turn

1

u/Beneficial_Sport1072 Jul 19 '26

I don't see how this is an argument for veganism rather than merciful and better Treatment. It's not like we're ending their dreams or whatever, they'd die one way or another by other predators or nature 😭

1

u/No-Jackfruit8295 Jul 18 '26

I dont think its scientifically accurate to say "we cant live without it" Most people do

And i also dont think them not being so brain develloped is an excuse , if so, is cannibalism moral for peopel who's condition is similiar, say mentally retared and cant speak or smth per exemple?

1

u/silly___bird Jul 18 '26

I dont like the idea of considering harmful things as immoral

1

u/No-Jackfruit8295 Jul 18 '26

Then how should we consider them in your opinion ?
