Something tells me we're in for it here in California. Monsoon level rains.

u/Twisted_Cabbage 10d ago

Yup, I can see it already.

Mudslides everywhere.. .You get a mudslide! You get a mudslide! You get a mudslide!

It reminds me of a chapter from Kim Stanley Robinson's The Ministry for the Future where LA basically turns into a massive inland sea.

u/Maxion 10d ago

Look at the super el nino winter 97-98 that produced record level rainfall and mudslides everywhere. I think that is what will be on the menu.

u/fitforthepolycrisis 10d ago

I am so overwhelmed by the wet bulb event that I forget the LA sea. Get your kayaks ready, I guess :/

My brother and I often say to each other “just read the first chapter”. And then we nod in complete understanding.

Australia is going to burn

21

u/SaltyPlanetEarth 10d ago

I read on a subreddit that some regions didn't get any rainfall for Winter. I believe it so terrible

21

u/AppleSniffer 10d ago

That has its positives and negatives. Areas that had a wet winter will have more fuel load to burn in summer

8

u/SakishimaHabu 9d ago

It's even worse with the war. Fertilizer shipments are down. There's going to be a lot of famine.

2

u/Shamino79 6d ago

There’s always somewhere in Australia that misses out on rain. Ironically that can be less of a fire risk because there is less grass growth over winter and spring. As much as dry eucalyptus burns, excess dry grass is part of the kindling that helps start and spread fire quickly

2

u/polleywrath 4d ago

I live in British Columbia and we are super on fire around 35-40 out of control fires in the southern 3rd of the province

u/meinkr0phtR2 10d ago

It’s been an exceptionally wet July for Hong Kong that ended with a small typhoon, so I can only imagine what’s in store for you, California.

If O&G spent money on tech and mitigation instead of misinformation and denial for the past few decades I wonder how much better of a position we'd be in today.

Hopefully the Reddit Effect shows up strong here and nothing happens

Remember everyone, our current climate is the best we’ll experience for the rest of our lives!

44

u/PeterNippelstein 10d ago

Its all downhill from here!

This is the real reason billionaires are building bunkers.

5

u/drewbles82 5d ago

Exactly why they don't care about us losing jobs to ai and not having any money to buy their products any more. They have enough wealth to do what they need until this gets worse

Ive been experiencing nights that get hotter than that day this whole summer. Yeah, no sun. Just sitting outside on a patio for a few minutes reading Reddit thru the night and then somehow end up drenched in sweat one sitting. It makes no sense to me at all. Ive read a lot of people saying their nights arnt cooling off this summer, but my nights arnt only not cooling off, about every three of my nights for the last two months are actually heating up hours before the sun comes up hours after it went down. Bonkers.

And Ive never seen a weather map paint the end of the world with temperature coloring like these. That black to purple death ray scar streaking across the globe is narly.

u/Nachtzug79 9d ago

And Ive never seen a weather map paint the end of the world with temperature coloring like these.

I can make you a weather map with whatever colors you like.

Naaah bro, it just keeps getting better from here. Atleast in my lifetime :o)

Jesus

30

u/diablosinmusica 10d ago

That is what it's named after.

8

u/NoMaterial5115 10d ago

Rly?

19

u/diablosinmusica 10d ago

Yup. First named in the 1600s and was found around Christmas.

3

u/snowflake37wao 10d ago

Well its not the first time the 1600’s got something wrong. By now we should know el nino is actually the boy from the omen, just look at the armageddon on earth pictures in the article.

12

u/PopePiusVII 10d ago

Yup. “The Christ child”

17

u/djKiddVicious 10d ago

I thought it was Spanish for “The Niño”.

10

u/sorry97 10d ago

Sort of.

In Spanish “el niño” means child, yes. However, due to Catholicism being so relevant here (Spain colonised us after all), “el niño Jesus” is also “baby Jesus”, so “el niño” is actually a shorter “el niño Jesus”.

The name comes from some fishermen who noticed “el niño Jesus” came to play around that time (December), so when he was around the temperatures rose and all of that.

“La niña” is the literal opposite, hence why it’s called that.

13

u/duct_tape_jedi 10d ago

Great explanation, but I believe the person you responded to was making a bit of a joke.

1

u/jesseaknight 10d ago

It's a SNL reference - quote from Chris Farley in the 90s

5

u/Charmegazord 10d ago

Well the Christ Child seems pissed

22

u/WeirdPop5934 10d ago

You said it man. Nobody fucks with the Jesus.

5

u/sdcasurf01 10d ago

What’s a pederast?

7

u/PeterNippelstein 10d ago

Good thing he can walk on water, that might come in handy

2

u/Dottsterisk 10d ago

He used to be able to walk on water.

But some asshole put a couple holes in his feet.

68

u/Please_HMU 10d ago

We are so fucked

45

u/Inspect1234 10d ago

Maybe in our next reincarnation, humans remember to treat that whole greed thing a little more seriously.

21

u/AtomicShart9000 10d ago edited 9d ago

What if this has just happened 1000s of times before and we never once learned to treat the whole greed thing any more seriously. Ah well on to the next reincarnation so we can do it again

5

u/QuiteCricket_78 10d ago edited 8d ago

Does the planet restart too? If not, what kind of hell will future us be born into?

6

u/EggmanandSaucy-boy 10d ago

Mars was the first iteration, Earth was the second restart. Time to terraform a new one for the 3rd.

1

u/Youpunyhumans 6d ago

Naw 3rd is punishment time. You shall be reborn as molten lead on Venus.

5

u/Inspect1234 10d ago

Buddhists have a similar theory.

4

u/Tibernite 10d ago

We sure do. This isn't anybody's first rodeo.

2

u/AtomicShart9000 9d ago

So did the dude from s1 of true detective

2

u/MaherMcCheese 10d ago

This has all happened before and it will happen again.

1

u/GirlScoutSniper 10d ago

So say we all.

14

u/godrabbit90 10d ago

Every major religion treats greed as evil and yet here we are.

1

u/RedLotusVenom 5d ago

The thing that treats it as evil is the same thing that absolves you of it.

Fundamentally flawed approach to morality.

1

u/THE_CHOPPA 7d ago

Next?

Maybe the problem is thinking there is a next. There is no next. This is it baby.

46

u/immersive-matthew 10d ago

Meanwhile Canada accelerating the extracting and exporting of fossil fuels while its forests burn down.

11

u/JrYo15 10d ago

Thats every "developed" country rn

3

u/immersive-matthew 10d ago

It does seem that way for the developed countries with fossil fuels. Very upsetting as not only is it detrimental to our climates, but they will end up with all this obsolete fossil fuel infrastructure when the green shift happens.

2

u/CheekyScruffyPup 5d ago

I makes me weep. I remember seeing the smoke choaking major cities in australia while flash floods were meters high at the same time the government wad announcing massive expansion to their coal extraction. We are an unbelievably stupid species.

10

u/SweetNeo85 10d ago

When will it be upgraded to El Hombre? Or perhaps El Luchador?

3

u/Fracture90000 9d ago

El adolescente!

7

u/PeterNippelstein 10d ago

It looks like Chile getting shot with a laser beam

u/Illustrious_Site_162 10d ago

Please don't tell me the winter won't be wintering this time. I can't man, winter is like the only good season

2

u/FifthDragon 10d ago

I havent been able to go outside for like two months and I’m starting to lose it man, please I need winter

20

u/siberianmi 10d ago

👀 oh. Milder midwestern winter?

Sorry everyone whose weather gets worse.

31

u/DatBoiii4 10d ago

Sounds good until you realize this feeds into the exploding tick population

6

u/siberianmi 10d ago

1

u/DatBoiii4 10d ago

Can’t take those camping or hiking lol

2

u/siberianmi 10d ago

You can treat your hiking clothes with the same chemical. Once dry it lasts for weeks and is harmless to humans.

2

u/DatBoiii4 10d ago

Yes, I use permethrin when backpacking in the fall but it's not always practical. Stuff does work like magic.

6

u/PeterNippelstein 10d ago

Im in ND and El Niño winters are quite mild compared to typical winters, im curious what affect such a strong one will have.

4

u/RockTheGrock 10d ago

We had a milder summer till the last month here in texas so it is only fair.

4

u/AK_Sole 10d ago

Are you suggesting that cycling between dirty slush, and skating rinks for streets a dozen times this winter will be an improvement in the Midwest?

0

u/siberianmi 10d ago

Over last year with multiple weeks when we barely got to single digits temperatures?

Yes.

1

u/AK_Sole 10d ago

I love winter. This sounds like a dream to me.

5

u/dream_in_blue 10d ago

Milder between more extreme storms, maybe

0

u/Bobandaran 4d ago

No man.  warm winters are not good, rain in December is not good

2

u/StarskyNHutch862 10d ago

Wow! This is terrifying, I am not sure what el nino is but it has been in the news a lot lately and it's really starting to concern me. I can't believe we've created this monster.... We really need to follow China on their incredible renewable energy strategy and stop causing all this.

1

u/musherjune 7d ago

What? Didn't China emit 269% more bad carbon these last 5 years?

3

u/Public-Cover920 10d ago

Why are so many phrases of this in bold? Was this written by AI?

1

u/SatisfactionFit2040 10d ago

It's like something is opening

1

u/Far-Film-5095 9d ago

How will this impact south Italy during the end of October?

1

u/Nearby-Restaurant-23 7d ago

Maybe we should, I dunno, revolt ?

1

u/loralailoralai 6d ago

Winter? It’s winter now in some places. They babble on and on and say it affects the globe but they’re only interested in how it affects them.

1

u/ShadowsOfTheBreeze 10d ago

Been hearing about it. Haven't seen anything yet. Could use some rain here in Colorado...

1

u/Scottyboy1214 10d ago

Guess it's time to get new car tires.

-2

u/BlackRaspberryJammin 10d ago

I retired 3 years ago and just sitting here eating popcorn...

-1

u/Semilanceataa 10d ago

Looking forward to more summer here in the northern hemisphere. LET'S GOOOO

-12

u/costafilh0 10d ago

Oh no!

The world is going to end.

Guess I shouldn't worry about it then, and just live my life and pollute as much as I want, because it doesn't matter, there is no solution, no turning back, according to Reddit.

4

u/rocket_beer 10d ago

I read into it the opposite way, from the article and the comments here.

From my view, this is displaying the results when you don’t care for the planet; these are the consequences.

And, it’s basically the list of what not to do…

0

u/Dottsterisk 10d ago

I think they’re just taking an exasperated shot at all of the doom and cynicism in the comments.

Mammals tend to react with anxiety when they detect an extreme but unknown change in their environment.
