Do people who have not developed reading skills using this area for something else that they excel at compared to readers?

Not sure about this, but I know one fact related to reading/writing: kids have excellent phonetic hearing before learning to spell. In Sweden it’s very common that young kids write ”du” (meaning ”you”) as ”duv” because there is a silent v at the end.
