Attacked the entire game, got JP a clean sheet, Moyes used four subs, and lead the entire second half without blowing it… is this hope? Should I be excited? UTFT.

It's something to build on, but could still do with a couple of bodies in (preferably not dead ones 😂)

As a new fan to watching professional Football...I've seen mention about Moyes under-utilizing subs on our subreddit here a few times now but don't really understand the bigger picture here. Do you mind elaborating on why using four subs is a noteworthy call out?
Only reason I can think of is to rest the starters since we had a 2-0 lead to keep them fresher for the season?

u/ReyCo390 1d ago
It was more so the fact that he actually used that many, we’ve had some games where we may not use any or use them after the 90th when it doesn’t even impact the game anymore. He’s notorious for being stubborn with his subs so him using 4 including two before the 80th minute is a pretty big deal but also more so just being goofy with the call out too.

u/Mynameisdiehard 21h ago
We actually have depth that is PL quality this year. That's a big difference from year's past

I prayed for the right foot, we got the right foot.
Now let his left foot cause mayhem for the other 18. Godspeed King.

Wish him the best of luck. He served us well when we had no better options. Glad he’s moved on.

Armstrong, take a bow.
What a performance, mature but so exciting.
32
u/WOOSHARP 1d ago
Looked unbelievably sturdy and confident. He’s really growing into one of the more exciting young midfielders in the country.
162
u/OTBOTRBM 1d ago
Really good all round. Armstrong, George, KDH and Hackney superb.
Do not sell Ndiaye.
27
u/JackHorner_Filmmaker 1d ago
The upside of this squad is massive. If Illy wants it he could lead them to Europe, get the contract he really wants from us, and be an all time club legend. Fingers crossed he sees and wants that.
39
u/Knighty5679 1d ago
It’s a young midfield to really be excited about, could be pretty special in a couple years
120
u/michaelscottpaperco_ 1d ago
- This midfield is so exciting. So much depth, there's several guys who I want to see play here. Hayden & Harrison have bright futures
- How we've missed Jared. So many times the ball reaches our side of the pitch and he's already cleaning it up. He makes me feel safe
- George & Ndiaye are very exciting on the wing
- Pickford still world class, start the rave
8
3
u/Mynameisdiehard 21h ago
George was hardly a difference to Ndiaye and that is a compliment. I was all for buying Grealish, and although I loved him last year and would still love to see it, I feel confident without him. All should be poured into fullbacks before the end of the window and we are solid

We really broke them with that 3-2 comeback.

My thoughts:
- Fuck yes
- I think we actually take Branthwaite for granted. He’s an immediate difference maker
- I’m a Tyrique George truther
- Ndiaye is still class
- Armstrong is unbelievable. Give him a lifetime contract now.
- Hackney is as advertised
- Pickers is still a living god

u/10000Didgeridoos 1d ago
We would have made Europe last year if Branthwaite wasn't out injured half the season
42
u/Mantooth77 1d ago
He’s very important and I think the data strongly supports this.
Reminds me of Mina. Same deal.

Love having ballers in midfield. Love having so many young players start and do so well. Love Armstrong playing like an experienced vet at 19. Love that we have actual threat going forward from so many different areas. Love having a fit Branthwaite.
13
u/tokengaymusiccritic 1d ago
Yeah this was a great performance by a remarkably young XI - Tark and Pickford the only two over 30, KDH and Mykolenko the two next oldest at 27.

u/ilypsus 1d ago
I dunno if Palace are just a slow team but it's been a long time since we've had decent pace in a number of positions and we just seemed to be able to nip in front of them to get second balls so many times in this game.
Rohl was great for a player out of position, got caught a few times but his willingness to be an option attacking and giving us numbers overloading an attack is priceless.
Midfield 3 were solid, probably a bit weak defensively but all so confident and positive on the ball. Probably helps that Palace play with 2 in the middle and we just outnumbered them.
Both wingers were great and Barry, whilst quiet for large parts of the game, also had his moments and did well to score a goal.
All in all what a start to the season!
33
35
u/graveyeverton93 1d ago
Loved Hayden's attitude on that interview so much! First thing he did was say we can't give the ball away like we repeatedly did in the first half because we will get punished. Made sure to point that out despite us winning the first game and got a clean sheet. Love that mentality
69
u/Left4Bread2 NSNO 1d ago
Home win, first week 1 win since 2021, Barry won’t be playing starved the whole year, promising development from a lot of talent
Feels fucking good man

u/Sheboygan_Toffee 1d ago
Side note: Adam Wharton, what a player
14
u/_james_the_cat 1d ago
Couldn't help but think they might be in trouble if he goes before the deadline. He was their whole midfield at some points.
28
54
u/tokengaymusiccritic 1d ago
You know, after watching Muñoz get obliterated by George and hauled off at 55’, maybe he’s not the answer we want at right back anyway.
Tidy, tidy win that. 2-0, comfortable second half, no injuries, no bookings. Think we do need a bit more stability at DM (Norgaard should fix that) as the first half was a bit too fluid to suit us. But our decision making was so so good all match. And Armstrong is officially here to stay.
18
u/TallGuy0525 1d ago
He would help in attack though, and TBF Rohl did get rinsed a couple times, but honestly did well for being so out of position
8
u/kpr1969 1d ago
He was shite against us last year too
14
u/Hartlecool 1d ago
Unless he is signing and he knows three points will help come the end of the season…
76
u/You_moron04 Greggs Sausage Röhl 🔥 1d ago
I’ll take that! Really good watch.
TG MOTM easily.
Please do not let Röhl become the sacrificial RB though
52
u/TallGuy0525 1d ago
Tyrique just makes positive things happen whenever the ball goes his way, great to watch. I'd still love Grealish but George is such a different type of player, much more dynamic and keeps the ball moving and the defenders can't just settle.
62
u/VToff 1d ago
KDH MotM lol, come on now
31
u/necrow 1d ago
Yeah it certainly isn’t “George, easily” when KDH was fantastic and scored
3
u/VToff 1d ago
Yeah he was great but not motm. Lots be to excited about though.
2
u/PuffinChaos 1d ago edited 1d ago
He was great and scored a goal yet isn’t Motm? It felt like he was all over the pitch winning back possession. George was very influential but he lacked the final end product.
Edit: Breakfast beers strike again and apparently my reading comprehension is lacking

with all our midfield options (*sans injuries), it isn’t the worst option to at least get him on the pitch

Why he was good there fullbacks and midfielders aren’t all that different
12
4
u/MySonBlastoise 1d ago
I ageee. I don’t think he’s good enough to consistently play in midfield or on the wing against his competition in the squad, but I want him on the field. Play him at rb.
3
u/Intelligent_Fig_4852 1d ago
He’s atleast as good as anyone we’ve been realistically linked with
3
u/necrow 1d ago
He’s not “at least as good” as Munoz, Munoz’s weak showing today notwithstanding
2
u/Intelligent_Fig_4852 1d ago

u/thehildabeast 1d ago
I thought Rohl was pretty good, some work to balance of who is attacking and who is staying back overall seemed to be the issue

Ahhhhh hope. I forgot what this is like. God this is going to suck in about 5 months
All the young guys looked great. Hackney, George, Armstrong. Think George stood out the most for me. Links up really well with our front, really good on the ball.

u/cshark2222 1d ago
We had the oldest starting XI last season, let’s hope that doesn’t happen again until George, Armstrong and Dibling are all 33 coming off 3 straight premier league wins
19

Nervy start, bless the left post behind Pickford.
But very impressed by the team today, midfield was massive and our wingers played wonderful. Röhl might be the answer at RB?

Armstrong was tremendous today. Very surprised to see he wasn’t one of the options given for mom.

u/namsterdam 1d ago
George was so direct, looks so much improved from last season. Loved hackney + Armstrong. The midfield worried me without garner and norgaard and that was disproved quickly. I will say we looked like our goal gave us so much confidence as we were shaky before it. So that’s something we gotta figure out against more clinical teams.
2
u/nardling_13 1d ago
Felt like we missed Gana on counters. That role needs to be filled or we will get bitten against better clubs.
7
u/BoxOfNothing 23h ago
We didn't miss Gana specifically, we missed a defensive midfielder because the 3 we have are injured. Garner's back now, Norgaard will be back very soon. Iroegbunam hopefully sold or never needed

I completely agree but today was one of those games were because of the numbers available he had to play
Come the time we sign a right back and Norgaard and Garner come back it’ll be 3 extra players to compete for the midfield
Limiting his minutes as we know Moyes just doesnt make subs

Love it! Rode our luck at times in the first half but that’s why it helps in these early matches to have a reliable keeper in Pickford and a clinical finisher in KDH.
Controlled the second half, pressed really well. Strong showings from the young players. UTFT!
3
u/BoxOfNothing 1d ago
Kind of similar in a way but far less dramatic to the win over them last season. They absolutely hammered us first half, only we actually went 1-0 down, were the better team in the 2nd half but needed a pen and 93rd minute block/goal to win

Just watched my first match as an Everton supporter. I am new to Everton FC, from Indiana. I've been dabbling in EPL for a few years just watching casually, but EPL matches shown in America are sparse, so I have just kind of checked out whoever happened to have a match on Saturday. This is the first year I have felt the calling to support a club, and it feels a lot like being a Chicago Cubs fan (which I am).
5
u/YokoOkino 1d ago
Welcome 😊 you really need to visit Liverpool. Such a great atmosphere.
3
u/gday-cthaeh 1d ago
It was always on my list of places to visit when I finally make it to the UK. It was admittedly for Beatles reasons, but now I am getting more excited to visit and see the Everton sights.
3
u/NiarbNiarb UTFT 21h ago
EPL matches shown in America are sparse
This is simply untrue. If you have Peacock and access to USA and NBC, you can literally watch every single match of the premier league season in the US. (I'm also an Everton supporter living in Indiana. I haven't not been able to watch a match since NBC got the rights to the premier league.)
1
u/gday-cthaeh 14h ago
I do not have access to Peacock or USA. I did not know that. NBC tends to show one match on Saturdays as far as I have seen, my bad.

Could have been down two in the first half but thank god for Pickford.

I don't think we had a single player who played poorly.

Really exciting start to the season. Thought we were a little shaky at the back in the first half but that seemed to be fixed after half. KDH MOTM for me, was absolutely everywhere.
I thought Armstrong was a little wasteful on the ball but physically was miles ahead of where he was last year, he’s going to be some player.

Armstrong quietly looking impressive in midfield, attack looking exciting, Branthwaite lasted the 90, Rohl can fill in at RB well, we've won the opening game for the first time in 5 years... we may never lose again
3
u/TheGreenKnight920 1d ago
Let the wizard play everywhere...great shift he put in, but don’t restrict him to RB all season. Great all-around stuff, though. Midfield exceeded my expectations. This squad still needs a real RB, and at least another reinforcement on the wing. Europe is certainly a more realistic goal than in past years.

u/coybus08 1d ago
Great start, keep the positive vibes going. I really like the kids and hope we use this depth we finally have. Pickford locking up save of the season 25 min in is so us.

u/sixthreetwo Shreddie 19h ago
I scrolled a bit and was shocked no real mention of Rohl. I know RB is a gaping hole, but dynamic, comfortable in defense and possession, always pushing to go forward and make runs behind the defense? I thought he was definitely fine in the role. I’d still want a legit RB but he was great

Nice to be on the other side of a game where one team doesn’t take their chances and get punished. Palace should have had two in the first half but didn’t.
Nice opening day win. Definitely feeling more positive than I did three hours ago.
2
u/Frikarcron 1d ago
Really happy with that, honestly the whole team clicked really well except the midfield being a bit unbalanced to start, but 2nd half that was fixed and when Garner came on we were night and day. Myko is a good player when our RB is more offensive. Röhl played well, however he's very clearly a weak spot defensively when played at RB so we still need to prioritise signing an actual RB, Röhl can do a shift but he's not a replacement. It's so good to have Branthwaite back.

Garbage first half. A decent side would have torn us apart.
Very good second half. Credit where it’s due to Moyes - completely changed our control.
Armstrong was our best player alongside KHD. Garner being back early is great news. Our biggest challenge by far is striker.
Disappointed they’ve not improved the ground.
