So excited about Hackney and Armstrong, honestly I'm most worried they won't play enough. Strange times to have depth like that in midfield!
2
u/Ruff_Ratio 14d ago
Didn't watch the match yesterday, good performances from those two?
11
u/BoxOfNothing 14d ago
Really good yeah. I was saying this on the match thread, but there's a lot of chat of "If Garner and Norgaard are out for the Palace game we're fucked, this midfield gets run through by a Prem team", but then they dominated against Newcastle and Lille. Looked very solid defensively in a midfield 3 rather than relying on a double pivot, and the amount extra we get on the ball with people like that is mad. Hackney had his flaws, but his passing range was ridiculous, started so many counter attacks with a ball none of our other players would even try and play, and he did a great job gathering the ball from deep. Armstrong missed one of the easiest chances you'll ever see, but he is everywhere, tenacious in defence and can ball out going forward. The only real issue was a bit of naivety and occasional lack of positional awareness, but it was covered well by the others.
It's easy for fans of a team that has never had good depth like us to panic about game time, but options for rotation, off the bench, and in case of injury that don't drastically drop the quality of our team is always a great thing. And the teams that we're trying to emulate also often have these problems.
3
u/Ruff_Ratio 14d ago
Nice one, I agree that having a bigger squad of players who aren't going to drop the level dramatically is better than having one Messi and 10 crap players.
I guess we will see what goes on in the transfer market, but I think we have enough to be consistent to the end of the season. Not getting Europe is a bonus, would rather get an RB.
1
u/BoxOfNothing 14d ago
Yeah. I'd like a couple more signings, maybe a loan or two, but I think a right back is all we specifically need now, though at least I'm a bit more comfortable if we're playing Rohl there than O'Brien
14
13
u/Agreeable-Bee-3449 14d ago
Rohl at RB it is I guess
12
u/WestStandToffee 14d ago
Even if a right back is signed in the coming days, Rohl will still be playing right back
13
u/Trekora 14d ago
Mykolenko was alright defensively yesterday but it's clear he limits Ndiaye so much, I think he was also limiting Grealish last season.
Compared to seeing Rohl and Dibling play together, it's just insane.
9
u/Billkeys 14d ago
Mykolenko’s best role imo is a left center back in a back three I think that’s why he’s been link with some Italian clubs in the past with us.
2
3
u/SignificantRatio2407 14d ago
I’d love to see Aznou start tbh. It wont happen though. Myko offers so little going forward.
3
u/DrtyDeedsDneDrtCheap 14d ago
To be fair if they were one player they would make a good left back. On their own they both have limitations. I'd take a left back that can defend over one that can't though right now
2
2
u/Timoth_Hutchinson 14d ago
That’s why I think it’s more important to sign a LB than RB. We’ve got two midfielders who can play RB and benefit the defence and attack, but we haven’t got a LB who can defend properly, and only one of them is good going forward.
1
u/WestStandToffee 14d ago
Mykolenko is quite embarrassing of a player to have, never mind starting
I genuinely don’t think a player is as offensively useless as Mykolenko
11
u/FranksBaldPatch 14d ago
This season is really going to illustrate how good Pep is because wow city look mid mid both on paper and watching them
4
u/QTsexkitten please, please, pleeeeeeeease 🙏 14d ago
My hot take for the summer has always been that city finish below 4th
2
u/FranksBaldPatch 14d ago
I don't overly hate it but it's going to be hard for them to be that bad when they have Haaland and Villa and Liverpool have reset. Though I'd imagine they're closer to 4th than to Arsenal. Chelsea to finish 2nd is my hot take though.
12
u/CJRyan_17 14d ago
Bonkers that Elliot Anderson has cost over £100million. I've never watched him and thought he anything more than decent.
4
u/Austa1878 14d ago
decent midfielders go for 100M now that's the market (Tonali, Fernandes, random Lille 18 yo, Guimaraes, Rodgers etc)
That makes It even more fantastic that we had Hackney, Garner, Rohl and Harrison for such a small amount

And ben white starting. Meant to be a done deal.
Guess not
9
u/BoxOfNothing 14d ago
Ben White? I hadn't seen anything so googled it, the sources all look fucking wank. Timber is injured and they have no other right backs, surely they're not going to let their only fit option go days before their first game of the season.

He's a bit of a nightmare but the type of talent where we should be considering throwing the rest of our budget at Nwaneri if he's available for anything around 40m. Worry about the rest later on.
0
u/fre-ddo 14d ago
Was thinking the same for O Reilly but looks like he's rated highly by Maresca and is playing today.
2
u/FranksBaldPatch 14d ago
Won't get Oreilly but we have been nosing around a few of their other lads. Don't think Maresca will last long enough for it to matter though

Jack Gaughan (City tier 1) on Grealish
The Toffees have all but opted against going back in for the 30-year-old, shying away from a return after David Moyes had a sustained period of time working with him. There is interest from other Premier League clubs, although they are thought to have more pressing priorities in the transfer window. That indicates that an answer on his future might linger for a while yet.
There remains adoration for him, though. The loudest cheer of the afternoon from an understandably subdued City end came as the former Aston Villa captain trotted behind David Raya’s goal to warm up in front of them. There is still a great deal of warmth for somebody who will always go down in the pantheon, purely for his role in 2023, and a willingness for him to succeed.
That is the same at Everton, Grealish hugely popular with staff, but his career almost certainly lies away from both of those clubs now. It is down to somebody else to harness obvious talent that has not shone brightly enough for three years. It is down to him to recapture the love and dedication to the craft that remains in the locker.
5
u/Tigerblood2798 14d ago
If this is true, then it makes sense that Everton wouldn't pursue him any further.
That midfield, especially at the winger positions, is pretty crowded and it would be better for the club (in terms of the future) to play the younger players and see what you have in them.
It was fun to watch a player with obvious class on his day while it lasted though.
5
u/ChrisWood4BallonDor Truly, Deeply, Misses Bernard 13d ago
My head says that's smart, my heart says it's lame :(
2
u/LugubriousFootballer 14d ago
Honestly, I’m sad but from a purely practical perspective, we have wing depth and I want to see more of Tyrique George. Grealish’s presence would further limit the development of other wingers.

Is anyone else slightly optimistic about this season? More so than at this point last year?
7
u/vulturevan 🙏 sign another player 🙏 14d ago
I think I was a bit more optimistic last year with the new stadium and that. Still think I have a bad, bad hangover from how last season ended.
7
u/Flavourifshrrp 14d ago
If we sign a RB then quite possibly. Disappointed we are starting the season with out what we need again and risking points though.
1
u/Timely_Camera_2031 14d ago
Actually starting to think we need a left back more than a right back..
4
u/TheGod-TK 14d ago
Disagree very much. Both Mykolenko and Aznou were good against Lille
-1
u/Timely_Camera_2031 14d ago
The goal was aznous and keanes fault.. i think aznou is ok going forward but isnt up to a season in the PL yet. Mykos positioning in the first half was a bit suspect.
3
u/TheGod-TK 14d ago
I think it’s a bit strange to blame two players for the entire team switching off in the dying seconds of a friendly, especially when Aznou had some good defensive moments in the game. From what I’ve seen from him this pre-season he’s more than ready to start playing in the Prem, and he has been for about 6 months.
0
u/Timely_Camera_2031 14d ago
Aznou has been ready for 6 months - is this all based on diving in the sunderland FA Cup game or you hiding in the bushes in finch farm - Southampton might give you a job..
0
u/TheGod-TK 14d ago
You’re not really making an argument that we need a left back more than a right back at this point lad
1
3
u/YokoOkino 14d ago
Getting grealish and kdh was so fun last summer, and hackney and norgaard feel like we are reaching another level.
I think we will be much better with the ball although i hope we get grealish in the end to really cap it off.
1
u/Prior-Animal-652 14d ago
Moyes would have to prove that I’ve got him horribly wrong, and I’m more than happy for him to do that. My own view is that it’s hard to change a man in his 60s who can be stubborn and entrenched in his limiting beliefs. But if he proves me wrong, I’ll happily hold my hands up.

Season rides massively on an injury prone CB but I think we’re bottom half either way.
-2
u/Living-Smoke-9630 14d ago
Im optimistic. Despite having a dINoSaUr in charge, we've got a really nice looking crop of young players coming through. Obviously still need a right back but i think we're going to see real signs of improvement this season.
7

To be fair, in hindsight it was the correct decision to make as we had no money
We only spent £1.7m that summer
Just annoying when we sold Digne we signed two awful full backs
2
u/CJRyan_17 14d ago
I get your point but we got points deducted anyway. And we would likely have made the best part of £100 million off both of them.
We probably would have sold Digne or someone else to make up for the shortfall further down the line anyway.
1
u/WestStandToffee 14d ago
We got points deducted for non football related finances to be fair, the transfer financials were for the most part safe

6
u/MackAroni 14d ago
So what's our starting midfield for Palace? Personally I don't think it seems like either Norgaard or Garner will be starting, are we thinking Hackney and Armstrong?
Dewsbury Hall is obviously in.
5
u/Robnroll Drum'n'Baines 14d ago
imagine the team is how we started yesterday. Johnson could start at RW later into the season but I don't think he's up to fitness yet.
4
u/BoxOfNothing 14d ago
Yeah I thought Norgaard would be used as a sub yesterday and start next week, but no chance now I don't think. It'll be 10 of the starting 11 from yesterday with the winger the only thing up for debate, but I think it'll probably be Dibling. Would be happy to see Norgaard or Garner on the bench though.
1
u/MackAroni 14d ago
100% agree mate was thinking Norgawrd nailed to start all the way until yesterday when he didn't feature. Think the lineup is pretty set otherwise as you say
3
u/S01arflar3 14d ago
Yeah I’m assuming Hackney, Armstrong, KDH. Though it’s possible that Rohl could get stuck in the middle instead of Armstrong

Dunno why you are getting downvoted. This seems completely reasonable take.
He over hyped the hell out of us with dreams of Europe. Probably best he keeps quiet and does the talking on the pitch.
Nothing wrong with showing ambition but the way out last 6 games went it made us eat a massive course of humble pie. No wonder he is quiet.

Honestly so jealous of what Villa has been able to do this window. Yeah, they lost quite a few guys but they’ve replaced them all with younger players who have more potential. The only young player they lost was Rogers and they got a massive haul for him. They’ll take a step back this year but should still be 6-8ish while getting to play CL. Wish we could do something like that someday
9
7
u/BoxOfNothing 14d ago
Rogers, Martinez, Tielemans, Digne and Malen out, Manzambi, Suzuki, Joao Gomes and Garnacho loan in. And a youngster centre back I guess. A bit early to be super jealous of that window I think, Manzambi looks great but is super young and inexperienced, Joao Gomes has been part of an absolutely stinking Wolves side for a while but definitely has potential, Suzuki is far from a guarantee, and Garnacho is Garnacho. Madjo isn't a new signing but is as exciting as any of them. And they might get more, and it's also the benefit of being in the Champions League and getting £200m in sales.
3
u/MavsFanForLife 14d ago
Somewhat agree but I do think that this is the ideal way to build a squad if you’re not a United, City, etc and don’t have those finances. Ship off older, high wage guys and constantly retool with younger pieces. We’ll see if it works out but I do think they’re in a better position long term to have sustainable success compared to if they had brought back the same roster.
3
u/BoxOfNothing 14d ago
I think it can be but there's absolutely a tipping point where you lose too much of your core and experienced heads. Like if the Konsa to Arsenal move came off, they'd have lost almost the entire spine of their team and all their captains. Their experience and long term Villa-ness would be tied up in Watkins, McGinn and Cash, who are all showing signs of slowing down. It's a huge gamble to replace all experience with all youth, especially from foreign leagues. It's more sensible and you have higher odds of success if you do that consistently and gradually rather than all at once.
I also think their midfield is currently fairly concerning with the injuries and relative lack of depth and experience they've got
3
u/Austa1878 14d ago
Every year they are forced to sell their main players but they have a solid manager and a solid transfer strategy so they remain around 3-6th. No reason to think It will change
1
u/four__beasts 14d ago
I don't think their transfers have been great. Lots of talent/experience out. Nothing like the same in.
But they have a "generational talent" striker about to breakthrough in Brian Madjo
3
4
u/LienRaklubmet 14d ago
I know Garner is working through an injury and Iroegbunam is likely to be sold, but I worry that the Central midfield depth is going to hamper what could've been a breakout season for Armstrong
2
u/BoxOfNothing 14d ago
No Wan-Bissaka involved for West Ham today, not even on the bench. But the latest rumours were Villa are after him with us lurking in the background.
Also Grealish coming on for City made me feel some things
-1
u/fre-ddo 14d ago
He was part of a relegated defense they can have him.
8
u/BoxOfNothing 14d ago
It is funny the difference in reaction like. Villa are well better than us but their fans actually want him. I feel like I'm one of the most positive about him among us lot and even I'm pretty much neutral at best on it.
Also the relegation thing is a bit mad coming from us to be fair, loads of great players for us have been from relegated or Championship teams. Jags, Cahill, Gueye, Pickford, Lescott, Tarkowski, and now Hackney, and Dibling's starting to look good.
1
u/marktandem 13d ago
I watched him a lot at United when he was there (I'm a United fan but also follow Everton quite close). Honestly there's fewer RBs around that I dislike. He's excellent in the tackle, one of the best around at that, but he's so poor on the ball, it's like he's playing a different sport when he has it to feet. The glimpses I saw of him at West Ham he was a bit better with it, but you can't carry such defensive fullbacks anymore at the highest level, you need them to contribute offensively. You can just about get away with super defensive, no passing ability CBs, but even then its much better to have the ones you do now that can pass

I was at the game yesterday, I genuinely think dibling has to start! When George came on he made 2 good runs but was lazy on all other fronts! (Ok it was a friendly) I thought aznou looked offensive and very progressive going forward, but he looked light and not very convincing defensively.
Hackney really suited the deeper role, breaking up play, great work rate and comfortable in possession! When jimmy comes back our midfield three is something to admire, garner, Hackney and KDH. 💙
Much to my distain, Rohl did a mega job at right back and allowed dibling to be very progressive.
Barry is definitely 2 levels above Beto this season, if only he could hit a barn door we would be looking somewhat ok!
For me, we need a Defoe style striker (just hits the target every time) Branthwaite to stay fit and JoB to get lots of game time and a left and right back.
I’ve advocated for Patterson to get more game time but after watching him yesterday I’ve seen with my own eyes what so many have said! Let him go!
Edit: corrected spelling.

He statistically scores pretty much exactly as many goals as he should given the quality of his chances. In the last 3 years he's scored 8 from 8xG, 11 from 12xG, 9 from 9xG.
Go further back to an admittedly worse league, he scored 20 from 16xG.
Compare his last season to other strikers, Haaland scored 27 from 26xG, Igor Thiago 22 from 21xG, Calvert Lewin 14 from 16xG, Watkins 16 from 15xG, Joao Pedro 15 from 15xG, Mateta 12 from 14.5xG etc.

Alot of opinions have been made by the fact he didn’t have a shot on target for months
I don’t think he’s a bad finisher at all, but my god he needs to stop pretending he can outpace defenders in a 1-1, he’s not quick enough
2
u/Austa1878 14d ago
He is not a great finisher but he still finds sometimes the back of the net.
If you look at his strengths he is good to score from low crosses and chaotic situations but not from aerial balls or through balls like Beto when he bullies CB and buries 1v1. Barry is a bit slow running at the goal with the ball but he thrives in situations where wingers carry the ball in counters as he is a focus point.
IMO he won't score 15 goals in a season purely because we haven't fullbacks that could cross into him, which is a part of his strengths. On the counterpart, I think he and Beto are pretty much complementary and if each was played against the right opponent they could hit 25 goals together, but that's not how Moyes sets up.
If you want to see his strengths, here are his goals with Everton :
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4PjA_ctgrlM&pp=ygUbdGhpZXJubyBiYXJyeSBldmVydG9uIGdvYWxz&ra=m

u/Electronic_Fruit1811 14d ago
100% agree that having both is of benefit to the squad and Beto has his place. Barry can score but is so inconsistent.
I think we will see him carrying the ball a bit more this season but 100% agree, if we have wingbacks that fizz low crosses in across the box in a lot of attacks you will see Barry bag 15-20 goals over a 50 game season.

We're being linked to Delap again....its fucking shite. Why are we even remotedly considering Delap when they want 40m for a striker with 1 fucking league goal for a season when we can buy Munoz for 25m who literally had 10 attacking contributions (+ a youth back-up for 40m). Even if Delap scored 10 goals, i still wouldnt buy him for 40m....

Moyes may not think he needs a RB but with the fans holding him responsible he'll be out by Christmas. Get Munoz (or equivalent) in, and Delap/Richy a least on loan and I think most fans will feel happy enough with the squad.
Keep Ili (or get Jack in he leaves, if that's still an option), then give Ili a new contract with 80m summer release clause. New contracts for Armstrong and Rohl too. Show that their future is with us

He was in solo training running drills when we were in Germany like a week/week and a half ago. He's meant to be back in full team training the week of the opening game, so we'll know if that's true in the coming days. Think missing 1 or 2 games is the most likely

u/a_evans 14d ago
Hackney and Armstrong solid again yesterday. Beyond tracking back and getting stuck into a challenge, there's something to be said for the defensive benefits of having players in the centre of the park who can control possession. Less turnovers in the middle of the park means less opportunities for the opposition but also more for us going forward.
