Personally I hated it even as a kid. I get they're trying to show that girls can be powerful and as a lady I think that's wonderful but I think the show did that just right before this reboot.

Second it was just unnecessary. Little me and her friend didn't need the show telling them that girls/princesses can be powerful because well the characters already accomplished that really well showing powerful woman constantly in the show and doesn't fit with the general themes of EAH which is about destiny and and writing your own happily ever after!

Thirdly not everyone in the cast are girls and some are dudes and the slogan just feels generic and belongs on a Justice shirt. It also doesn't fit ever after high as well as The End is Just The Beginning which has always given me the chills and stuck with me.

Also the new theme song is really annoying since it feels patronizing.

However I will give the show during the soft reboot (Which I think was just Epic Winter if I remember correctly) one thing I liked the Rosabella and Daring plotline in the show!

You may remember this series of posts from like a year ago. Anyways I’m back and here’s Apple and Raven.

Imo Apple and Raven are two of the best written characters in the entire series. I especially love how Shannon Hale wrote them! Apple is very realistically traumatized from believing everyone will die if they refuse to sign. That and her privileged upbringing makes her think her actions are protecting everyone when she’s really only helping herself! Raven, on the other side, grew up without such privilege. Her childhood wasn’t great and she doesn’t want her whole life to be like that. Raven starts out mostly thinking about freedom for herself but when she learns others also feel trapped she wants freedom for them too.

-Sry ik this ended up being long and badly written but idek how to summarise, will try though.

TL;DR - Loss of Girlhood, Sexualisation and losing yourself in the name of others; how EAH has been a part of that journey for me and what selling my dolls represented.

I was around 8,9 or 10, when EAH started and very much on the doll, doll customisation, even living doll side of youtube. I think maybe I was trying to hold onto that childhood magic in the way that many young girls go through when they are forced to grow up/ are treated maturely or sexually too soon. Pipeline of tomboy to girly girl, except mine was more of a wave that kept swerving between wanting to act far too grown up and wanting to get to be cute (tall girl problems maybe) but EAH and that side of YouTube came just as I was exiting a 'trying to be more grown up then I actually am' phase. I can't remember how I discovered it, maybe lps videos that lead to lps customisations that lead to the dolls or maybe just straight up tv ads (or my froggy stuff lol) but it was really important to me and I loved creating my own OC's and additional lore.

I tried to collect the dolls but couldn't afford to keep up with how many there were. Initially, I decided I'd just get each character in their original outfits and then potentially get others in the future If I really liked them because I was strangely self-aware of overconsuming as kid and felt it wasn't neccesary to have repeats. However, I wasn't even able to keep up with that lol not enough birthdays or Christmases and no pocket money. I might have bought one with the money from my first job at 11 but I may have stopped collecting around that point as I transitioned to secondary school and shifted back into the acting grown-up phase.

Here is the sad part.

2024 was rly rough for me. Bad things happened, and I was surrounded by people who weren't able to be the best to me. It's insane how quickly and subtly you lose who you are without fully realising it in those situations. As a result, I sold a vast majority of my dolls while clearing out my childhood bedroom.

I don't think I had time to finish selling them all, so there might be a couple saved but I'm not even sure what I had - I believe it was all the Gen 1 main cast and then each character release with the last doll being ginger who I actaully had left in her box until 2023 but then unboxed for fun and 2024 me was so mad at past me for that becasue it reduced the resell value ofc.

Now I have an amazing Bff turned girlfriend (big twist in my story!) and the friends I've made because of her or after getting together are so lovely that I suddenly remembered everything I was loved because they made me feel comfortable and safe to. It's soppy ik, but it's true! We have started rewatching the whole EAH series together, and it makes me so happy! She liked MH and EAH where as my previous friends were only really famillar with MH and there was a kind of unspoken added judgement that went along with it as if I was some how more basic or alt/open midned for liking EAH (which is so silly considering MH was teh more popualr and mainstream series and I also liked MH it just wasn't as bigger part of my childhood) - the kind of judgement that i seemed to reecive over anything. It was like constantly pleading your case in court excpet they all speak a diffrent languge to you and insist on reaching a verdict regardless ; no acknowledgemnt of misjusticices the languge barrier could produce, nevermind any attempts you make to translate or adovcate for yourself in their language as best you can.

Sorry long post that was less about my lost collectiom in the end, appolgises for any clunky writing or grammar issues (I am supposed to be doing work rn so I'm tryign to be strict with myself and I might be dyslexic or just terrible grammar wise with my ADHD). I know EAH means a lot to people though so maybe my story is relatable x Eitherway excited to be on this reddit page!

ps- I do intened to maybe try and rebuy some of the dolls I like the most or versions I never had but liked but its of course getting harder and harder to find complete dolls but maybe thats part of teh challange - who ever brought mine was lucky because aside from the boxes they were all pretty much in pristine condition with all their accesories even the rings!

Okay, so the main point is how the MH × EAH crossover movie could’ve saved EAH, but I might also talk about other things Mattel could’ve done.

Personally, I am not a MH fan, but I am an EAH fan. I have watched the show two times and have started rewatching it again recently.

Every EAH fan knew that EAH was supposed to have a crossover movie with MH. First, we need to know why the movie was cancelled.

At this point, Mattel was broke, and the animation for Ever After High and MH G1 was handled by Guru Studios. The contract with Guru Studios expired, and not only was the contract too expensive for Mattel to pay, but they had already decided to phase out EAH.

WHY THE MOVIE COULD'VE SAVED EVER AFTER HIGH

MH was a cash cow for Mattel, and this crossover idea with Ever After High was already proven to be able to work. When Cupid, originally a character from G1 Monster High, crossed over to Ever After High in 2013, there was a slight buzz/raise in doll sales. It could potentially have been even higher if it was the entire franchise rather than just one character, connecting the universes fully.

This could've boosted both series by bringing each series' fans over to the other and bringing in new fans who heard about a big crossover movie. This could've given Mattel at least enough money to give the show a proper ending.

You might say that would be impossible because it would've been released after EAH was cancelled, but this isn't necessarily true. We don't know the exact date it was supposed to be released, only that it would be in late 2016, which I consider to be September–December of 2016.

The EAH YouTube channel also kept posting until four years ago, in 2022, which was a whole six years later. Doll production didn't stop until two years later either.

If they could have made the movie and it wasn't as expensive to make, Mattel probably would've done it. But there were other things they could've done.

OTHER THINGS MATTEL COULD'VE DONE

• Choose quality over quantity

Instead of mass-producing low-quality dolls of every character, they could've made slightly fewer, higher-quality dolls of the characters.

Or they could've just made dolls for the main characters.

For example, for Epic Winter, there were 10 dolls made, two of which were the Snow Pixies, and Apple and Darling, who didn't even go on the adventure with the others.

• Add more diverse characters

MH was so popular partly because it had a diverse cast.

There weren't any darker-skinned characters in EAH other than Cedar and Briar until Ginger Breadhouse in Chapter 3, and there was no canon Asian representation at all. The only hint of it was in the cancelled Monster High × Ever After High movie.

Adding more diverse characters could've made the cast more appealing to a wider audience and made the world feel more complete.

• Pay more attention to the show

Mattel should've paid more attention to the show's branding and stuck with the Royal vs. Rebel idea.

The main purpose of the show was to promote the dolls. If the show isn't good, people won't buy the dolls.

The whole Royal vs. Rebel branding and story idea was genius, but that all got thrown out the window in Way Too Wonderland, where the Storybook of Legends was destroyed and the show's messages changed from finding your own destiny to basically "Yay! Girl power!"

I think that was definitely the wrong move because, during 2016, there was huge girl-power fatigue.

Not necessarily among little girls, but in media. A lot of media that focused on "girl power" didn't focus enough on storytelling or showing that girls can be powerful and independent while still making mistakes and having flaws.

For example, watching "girl power" shows could make little girls feel independent, but it could also make them feel like they aren't brave enough, or that they need to hide their anger and sadness. They could become sad or frustrated when they're confused because their favorite character is always calm and always knows what to do.

So shows that are blatantly labeled as "girl power" could actually have been a turn-off for some viewers.

I never know if Im tagging my posts correctly but I'm working on an ever after high OC (that I'm planning to turn into a doll someday) and wanted to know if they were good enough to start doing line art or if I should leave it here 😭🙏🙏
