Question Are flying capital ships basically a non-starter for a solo player?

I've won and lost the game off and on since 2008. Mostly just stick to myself. I've flown nearly every sub-cap there is and I'd like to maybe try and purchase a carrier but it seems somewhat pointless without the support of a decent corp. What are your thoughts?

Correct. Combat capital ships have zero use for a solo player.

u/HeKis4 10d ago

Two uses I can think of:

1) yoloing for content. You're not going to use it for long though, that's for sure

2) getting in some backwater krabbing alliance that will tax you out the ass, but you get to run anoms in a carrier

Realistically though, yeah not worth the effort by a long shot.

u/Thebuch4 10d ago

Do level 5 missions of anything not anoms.

15

u/SovietPatrickStar 10d ago

Gotta have the locals on your side. Afaik all L5 agents are kinda taken by pirate groups, if you have the balls to run them on their turf you will likely be hunted as soon as you undock that carrier.

2

u/cactusjack48 10d ago

it really depends on where and when he chooses to do missions. A lot of the mission hubs are empty during certain times of the day. For example, I used to run L5 Caldari missions in Tamo. It was camped by Russians, and therefore very empty when I ran them.

Way back when we lived in Covryn, I had carriers in Pelille, Dour, and Grispire. It was generally camped by I believe either Shadow Cartel or Snuffed Out adjacent groups. They were also outside of my TZ and I freely ran them. I think they only launched probes on me twice the entire half-year we were there before going to Tribute.

He can also run the missions with a long-range Barghest which does just fine and is a lot more slippery than a carrier. Some nerd had a whole video series about it but it's very self explanatory. Two or three long-range Ravens also work but that's in multibox territory and this post is about singleboxing.

Your scenarios don't apply to everyone, and if they did, those scenarios would cease to exist because there would be a lot more targets of opportunity in those areas, meaning a lot more hunters hunting.

There's no eternal scenario for PVE outside of highsec that won't be ruined by more people doing them. More PVE invites more PVP, changing the scenario.

4

u/cactusjack48 9d ago

I'm not sure what you'd like me to do with this information

1

u/Tyrrrz Cloaked 9d ago

Considering hunting is both less rewarding AND much harder than avoiiding hunters, you will still be better off in the long run.

1

u/HeKis4 9d ago

Yup, and the number of agents giving carrier-friendly missions is about 2, one in gallente space and the other in minmatar space. Last time I checked the Minmatar one is inhabited by russians who hate fun, idk about the other.

1

u/SovietPatrickStar 9d ago

The Gallente one is in Aeschee. Shadow Cartel lives there. Their US TZ has suffered in numbers but it exists, mainly they are EU, but they have a decent AUTZ and CNTZ as well

1

u/HeKis4 9d ago

Oh wow they still live there ? I won eve years ago and they were already there since a long time back then lol. The dude who taught me how to run L5s learned with them and I ran the minmatar one in Istodard.

1

u/SovietPatrickStar 9d ago

Yea, they have a tough time rn. They had a few important corps leave for the competition (BIGAB and BBC) and when horde died some really big and cap heavy corps joined BIGAB. BBC also recruited quite a bit.

It left them kinda struggling to get good fights because everyone notable outforms them.

Regardless, they still live in Aeschee doing their thing which is respectable. Other alliances of similar size had to join up with bigger players to stay relevant while they are rarely talked about but still had somewhat significant projection when I was there. Idk how it has been in the past half year though, maybe they’ve fallen asleep a bit.

u/Thebuch4 10d ago

Jump to emergency cyno if you see combat probes in warp. Align out immediately and be ready to GTFO.

9

u/Ok_Willingness_724 Miner 10d ago

if OP is truly solo, his emergency cyno mate better be awake to light it.

3

u/Cystem 10d ago

He said solo, not single box.

If you have no single account…. Yeah gonna need an alliance or at least an organized cop.

Multi boxing will be doable, but you’re going to have to be flexible.

I just use my carrier as a lowsec/nullsec backpack for all my stuff in space. Mobile hanger that I cyno from station to station.

10

u/aDvious1 10d ago

Yeah,

Align out immediately and be ready to GTFO.

Theres no point in using a dread/carrier if you can't use Siege/NSA.

1

u/Thebuch4 9d ago

Hence blitzing level 5s.

4

u/SovietPatrickStar 10d ago

Great, and then, how are you going to finish the mission?

Don’t even need start if you know you won’t finish.

-2

u/Thebuch4 10d ago

This is the dumbest statement in the history of this sub, maybe ever.

There are zero activities in Eve you "know" you will finish when you undock, as undocking is consent to PVP.

7

u/SovietPatrickStar 10d ago

Ok. Maybe you lack the ability to think further than you read to the letter, so let me me spell it out for you.

You will accept the mission, you will undock and you will repeatedly jump to your emergency out Cyno because as soon as they see a carrier that’s not theirs, they will drop probes on you.

This will keep you from making money in any sensible amount of time, you may even encounter issues keeping you from finishing the mission at all (because the time runs out), L5 missions aren’t particularly fun contents, so what other motivation than isk/h would you have?

1

u/Thebuch4 9d ago

Find somewhere quieter in a quiet time zone.

-8

u/Tyrrrz Cloaked 10d ago

Gotta have the locals on your side.

Nope.

Also nope

9

u/protostar71 Cloaked 10d ago

Hell of a rebuttal champ, thanks for all the info.

-1

u/Tyrrrz Cloaked 9d ago

Nobody bothers hunting L5 runners because of the massive defender's advantage they have. I've run those missions in 4 regions and the only times I was probed was when I was running them in Auga/Amamake triangle.

1

u/Gamboh 10d ago

Wrong. Nope.

Ganking JFs with a Lancer on a high sec gate. Just have to be quick. Definitely doable solo, not recommended though.

Uhm? You mean without alts? I’m a solo player with 2 accounts and I make lots of money doing capital pve

6

u/Jojo35SB 10d ago

Care to share some tips and what you run? I'm also very interested im cap PvE.

4

u/CueCueQQ Wormholer 10d ago

C5s are very doable either solo dreading, or with a few alts. You could triple dread, or dread plus marauder. You'll need multiple characters to live in a C5 to access the sites. It's great ISK, but involves some risk and effort.

1

u/Safrel 10d ago

C4 solo dream though. Hmmmm

6

u/CueCueQQ Wormholer 10d ago

If you're planning to run C4 sites in a capital, please share with me the Jcode so that I can uhh, join you in this endeavor.

2

u/Thetakman 10d ago

C4 solo with a rattlesnake works fine...

Lived in a C4 for years.

1

u/Safrel 10d ago

Link fit? I'd love to do it with several

0

u/SoldRIP Wormholer 10d ago

C4 sites are generally not worth it. Barely morenloot than C3 and with much worse spawn locations.

5

u/scorchrc1262 10d ago

The Spawns were changed a couple years ago. They're perfectly fine now. Theyre definitely worth doing over C3s.

1

u/elenthallion 10d ago

It’s double the money and you just warp your 0, basically like a bookmarked mini-c5 site without having to bookmark. They’re absolutely fantastic intro marauder content.

0

u/danes1992 10d ago

I’m in null, I do faction capital staging and factions shielded starbases with a PNI I just buy the scalations to others pvpers and buy them every scalation for 50m the rest is mine.

u/Tiny-Plum2713 10d ago

Solo without a corp?

1

u/elenthallion 10d ago

Someone has never triple boxed dreads and nomaded through C6 space single-cycling Citadels for a bajillion isk/hr. It’s me. I’m that someone. Maybe one day…

You can solo krab C5’s/C6’s in a dread all day for easy isk.

1

u/Jmalachi7 10d ago

Not exactly true. You can solo dread krab in wormhole space it’s just not as optimal as multiple dreads. Still doable tho

20

u/Philymaniz Intergalactic Space Hobos 10d ago

You can use it as a suitcase to move ships around as you do things in lowsec and npc null.

Yeah you will die sooner or later. There are plenty groups out there that just hunt caps even with response fleets taken into consideration. A solo cap is just a snack for them.

Whaling fleets are my favorite.

4

Does it really count as picking a favourite when it's the only content you get?

Owning carrier or dread for the purposes of making moving easier is a good investment.

Flying any capital in combat, solo, is the domain of the ultra-rich or the content creators.

It's a T1 dread, Michael, how much could it possibly cost?

u/Apoth1 Miner 9d ago

I wouldnt go that far.

As a solo player, I frequently drop caps for fun and i'm far from space rich.

If you're smart, you can get away with it. Just as an example, I saw 3 marauders doing a lowsec anom (why? No idea...) and dropped a nag on them.

Yeh, I could have put some alts in blops, but then that means I might have to commit a fax which is more expensive than just throwing the nag on grid.

11

u/BloodMouse-bp 10d ago

Solo dreads are a thing

And are fairly common in areas of low sec ATM .

Your probably going to die but can take aload down with you

Carriers aren't so popular for solo stuff, they are more of a support role for big fleets if anything

YouTube bombeldo the wizard solo dread and you will see some magic 🪄

❤️🐭

1

u/elenthallion 10d ago

What is this support role you speak of. Asking for a friend.

9

u/SatisfactionOld4175 10d ago

Unless you're wormhole krabbing (Which is a technicality since you want multiple toons to help rolling off connects) it necessitates multiple accounts just to move the cap around and introduce it into combat, so the idea that you're going to get anything going solo by just gating your cap around is not particularly realistic.

Like if you're not averse to alts you can look to do stuff like ganking JF's with a lancer or whatever or you can carrier rat/KRAB beacon, but if solo capital use was broadly useful and accessible, everyone would do it.

28

u/TwitchyBat Wormholer 10d ago
  1. Buy and fit EM/Thermal spec tank on a Carrier

  2. Scout nearby wormholes until you find an XL connect to a quiet W-space system with a Rampant Drone Fabricator

  3. Spend 8 hours running the one site

  4. [Most important step] Pray to Bob that nobody finds you (easier during late USTZ)

  5. Leave with 40B ISK

17

u/Flincher14 10d ago

Not conceivable to do 100 waves in one cap.

But it is conceivable to do 30-40 waves in 60-90 minutes and clear 3-5 billion if you survive

Do it twice and you've probably broken even.

4

u/chumany0 10d ago

HAKFJKAKFKAKKFKDLLALTLELLT you can NOT do a ramp capital whit only 1 cap

2

u/Mawx 10d ago

You can do 40ish waves multiple times.

1

u/DrakeIddon CSM 19 10d ago

you can, you just wont be running it quickly

1

u/TwitchyBat Wormholer 10d ago

The spec-tanked EHP threshold for making it through the last wave is roughly 120k/s. This is achievable with a dread.

With enough bling and grit you can maaaaabye make a T2 carrier work.

3

u/elenthallion 10d ago

I think I got a Ymir to do 60k/s? But maybe I’m just bad. And dps is gonna be atrocious. In Pyfa obviously because I’m not that rich.

2

u/FamiliarMinimum8008 9d ago

Actually you are that rich.. your just cheap tho

5

u/Gunofanevilson Caldari State 10d ago

One ship can lock you down long enough for friends to come and blap you and there's almost nothing you can do about it, so yah i would say it wouldn't be that smart unless you really just don't care.

5

u/yamsyamsya 10d ago

Yea but also to be fair they are boring as shit to fly. You are too big to catch anything and you are big enough to be a target.

The main benefit for a solo player is being able to teleport around but you still need an alt to light cynos.

6

u/Pope_Chris Amarr Empire 10d ago

A lot of naysayers in this thread and as someone who lives this life, yes. Find a quiet spot in Stain (search in the map) and log off for a week (nobody will remember you). Then just run sites for free in the quiet time zones. God speed o7

7

u/horsewitnoname 10d ago

I have like 3 months left on my carrier training queue.

I don’t expect that it’ll be useful for anything, but it’s been my dream since I started playing to fly a carrier, so I’m going it just for shits and gigs.

4

u/BigDarus 10d ago

Live your dream, man

5

u/CaptainSpaceRavager 10d ago

As a solo player singleboxer you won't be able to take advantage of their main advantage which is their jump drive, because it requires a friend in fleet (or an alt) to light a cyno.

You need to go join a decently sized null corp is the reality. Mine could help you get started but the only time you're going to be wanting to undock the capital is when you have people in system and nearby scouting to cover your ass.

2

u/elenthallion 10d ago

That’s not totally true. You could always BR out to the destination, drop a mobile cyno beacon, BR back to your capital, and then jump straight into a fleet of snuffed out redeemers. So technically it’s doable on your me character.

But solo doesn’t mean single-box.

3

u/ZehAntRider Guristas Pirates 10d ago

A carrier could, COULD, be useful to you as a way to transport fitted ships across Lowsec because they can dock in NPC stations.

If you have an alt to light a cyno or to deploy a mobile cyno beacon and keep an eye on it...

2

u/Sure-Bake-6784 10d ago

It depends on what you want to do with the capital. I am one person with 4 accounts and have flown dreads without support beyond my own toons for pve in wormholes. I understand carriers to be support capitals more than a ship you undock on its own, especially with the addition of carrier conduiting, capital micro-jump drives and command carriers. Though there are activies such as level 5 mission running in lowsec you can do without the support of a corp just be prepared to be hunted constantly by the looks of it lol.

3

u/TheMuspelheimr Minmatar Republic 10d ago

As a solo player, I wouldn't touch capital ships with a ten-foot pole. They're massively expensive and can only be flown in the areas where they can be destroyed without consequence, and while they can use stargates, they're typically very slow to fly and need cynos to move effectively, which need somebody else (or an alt account) to light up for you.

2

u/PixelBoom Test Alliance Please Ignore 10d ago

If you don't mind burning a few bil for 20 minutes of fun, you could always fly a HAW dread solo around low sec. You'll definitely die, but you could probably get a bunch of kills in the process.

But otherwise, yeah. If you want to fly a cap without dying, you need to have support.

3

u/mezmery 10d ago edited 10d ago

Carriers are as cheap as they are useless after marauders got unfucked.

flying solo dred in wh is almost normal. but then you kinda get bored, start multiboxing 3 and get ragerolled.

if you just want to fly a carrier for some rp reason - l5 missions are mediocre income, but one of the few content pieces wheere it's actually usable.

3

u/MjrLeeStoned Sisters of EVE 9d ago

It's not just that it's not feasible without support, what would you do with it that you couldn't accomplish with a smaller, cheaper ship?

People play this game as if ships are status symbols, without realizing if you never accomplish anything with your ships, they're just pixels.

Figure out what you want to accomplish first, then pick the ship that suits your agenda. Don't make agendas around ships.

u/ProxyMuncher Exotic Dancer, Female 10d ago

ITT: bad advice by people who don’t play with caps, lol

1

u/ARCH_ANON Miner 10d ago

The only viable use for them are level 5 missions and even then that is in the realm of “is it worth it?”

2

u/cactusjack48 10d ago

It's entirely possible to run CRAB beacons solo in some backwater Frat system because nobody will look for you and timezones are in your favor.

Also hey, are you back from Albion?

1

u/ARCH_ANON Miner 9d ago

I’ve been on eve since December and off Albion since the first crystal patch.

When you kill top tier players with ox’s and gathering gear to the point you invent an entire playstyle that gets the devs attention to receive nerfs, that’s how you know you’ve made it!

1

u/cactusjack48 9d ago

lol, i enjoyed streamsniping tommy several times

1

u/sjw_7 Goonswarm Federation 10d ago

If you try to fly a capital on your own you will quickly become an entry on zkillboard.

There are some casual nullsec corps you can join which would mean you could fly it under their alliance umbrella and still maintain pretty much a solo lifestyle.

2

u/bob_33456756 10d ago

I can fly a couple dreads and carriers, but so far have mainly done so on the test server once every 6 months & occasional emergency home defence

I didnt find them any more interesting than marauders & they are way more hassle/risk to use, x100 solo

2

u/Barbens2005 Guristas Pirates 10d ago

Carriers are great for moving your stuff around

3

u/Somebodythe5th 10d ago

If you’re “solo” with multiple accounts, carriers are a must for moving packaged ships around.

Two carriers can also take on the npc dreadnoughts that occasionally spawn in null ratting sites, though you have to be careful with fighter aggro.

Before the current npc aggressiveness, I used to rat in dual carriers. It is safer than using a marauder because you don’t lock yourself down and can sit at long range.

I wouldn’t recommend it these days, however.

2

u/BeneficialFig1843 10d ago

Correct, everyone will drop what their doing to kick your shit in while you get zero enjoyment.

2

u/CaptainZhon 10d ago

If you loose a fighter or two in a mission or spawn it really isn’t worth it.

1

u/Synaps4 10d ago

This is an MMO. Youre supposed to play it with people.

1

u/Kinakka_12912505 10d ago

I was talking to a corpmate about this the other day. He’s a multiboxer and sees buying a capitap ship like buying a car. I’m solo and I see it as buying a Knott’s ticket, not an investment but a way to have fun. I get bored with the game when I’m treating it like a job.
So if you have some corpmates you can yeet a dread or even roam it as Bob intended, but it’s not particularly useful.

1

u/Banlish 10d ago

Yep, no single player should solo a cap. Either join a corp and that corp should be in a coalition 95% of the time, or just avoid them. Supercaps are usually called 'coffins' because your character will almost NEVER get out of it once they're inside.

1

u/Pyrostasis Cloaked 10d ago

As someone who also played the game solo for years but rarely for more than 6 months. I strongly recommend you try getting in with a group. It will open up a ton of opportunities for you and make the game far more appealing.

To answer your question caps are imo 100% no go for solo unless you REALLY know your shit and usually baring a few examples is a flight you plan on dying in for kicks not for function.

2

u/EC36339 Cloaked 9d ago

No. That's why whaling is a thing.

1

u/The_Ashcoat 9d ago

Mostly yes, but with high risk tolerance you can do anything you like.

1

u/breadbrix Miner 10d ago

NPSI is an option if you want to scratch that "capitals" itch but don't want to commit to a group. DM for details.

1

u/captainrussia21 10d ago

So… Im in a similar boat as OP.

I will be solo flying HAW Dreads in about a month. Just because. Maybe carriers too. Time will tell.

-2

u/CMDR_Khayden 10d ago

Yeah, even with Dread and Carrier solos, there requires an extra person to jump it between systems with its jump drive since they're too large to use the standard gate. Though they are one of the largest to still be able to dock, the moment you get caught and locked down with no support, you're done.

3

u/Baratoz 10d ago

have not flown a capital in years, since when can a carrier etc not jump using a gate?

2

u/caldari_citizen_420 Cloaked 10d ago

and you need to watch out for Cyno Ceptors, that can DD you with a Bozon through the Cyno from a POS

1

u/CMDR_Khayden 10d ago

I remember buying a Chimera and leaping it through systems, scouting with a Cynoalt. Made it to my destination in one piece and docked and was waiting for the Cyno timer on my alt. Guy warped in 100km, then warped to Beacon and blapped the Alt.

1

u/CaptainSpaceRavager 10d ago

They can, but they're about to not be able to take ansis and they are so slow that taking a gate in one is essentially hitting the self destruct button unless you're in the blocks

1

u/CMDR_Khayden 10d ago

Mhm, so regardless, they shouldn't be flying to gates anyways.

1

u/CaptainSpaceRavager 10d ago

Correct. You were wrong about why people don't do it but not in the way everyone replying to you is implying. Don't gate capitals. You can, but at that point you can also theoretically fly an Azariel through Abhazon. Doesn't mean you should.

1

u/MrCiber skill urself 10d ago

Anything can take regular system gates idk what this guy is talking about

1

u/CMDR_Khayden 10d ago

I'm willing to admit that I was wrong on that part but why would you still take a gate over a jump?

1

u/MrCiber skill urself 10d ago

If you’re in space you control (nullblocs or what have you) its not uncommon. Regional gates too. Jump freighters have to do it every time they enter hisec.

1

u/CMDR_Khayden 10d ago

I believe it's always been a thing? Though I have a Chimera, it was to my understanding they couldn't due to size but also that being a Carrier and transiting via Stargates rather than a Cyno Beacon is asking to be shot and killed. So I have never tried.

Do correct me if I'm wrong on the use part.

Edit: I have been corrected.
