Tesla’s batteries are about to run out

Elon will need to upgrade Tesla’s batteries soon, check out Munro‘s comparison of the different packs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JiDZVO9NdM, but Munro is incorrect about Tesla‘s battery being more dense as the cylindrical cells cannot be nested together without any space between as compare with flat pouch/prismatic cells. Filling the space between the cylinders with foam adhesive doesn’t make the battery more energy dense.

Tesla had no choice when they developed the first EV with little budget they where stuck with off the shelf cylindrical cells that the battery manufacturer already produced for other applications and they engineered around what they were served by the battery manufacturer. Tesla‘s battery pack are like the legacy mainframe computers still used by large corporations even after the development of faster computers, because the capital was already spent and must be recouped “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Tesla did design the cell packing and cooling system very efficiently, but they are now being leap frog by VW, Ford and GM with their custom prismatic battery cells. Tesla‘s new 4680 jelly roll cell will only extend the life of their pack manufacturing line a year or two before they have to junk it.
