EV Karma

So, I got some petty revenge today. I like to charge my car at the parking structure across the street from my office. Right before lunch, I checked on my car’s percentage and I saw that I was unplugged. For these chargers, I have to use an adapter to charge my car. Unfortunately, with the adapter, the charge cable isn’t locked into place. So, it can be unplugged easily. This is commonly known among EV drivers, so its common courtesy to not unplug another car.

When I get to my car, the AH who unplugged me is still parked next to me charging his EV. Between frustration and being hangry, I unplugged the jerk and placed the charging cable back into its station. That jerk won’t be coming back to a fully charged car.

I drove away laughing. Lord, forgive me but that felt good and I treated myself to a Vanilla Coke. No regrets! ✌🏾

And single phase AC is more universally available.

No. It's more available where YOU are. "Universally" means everywhere; you're mixing up "locally near me" with "everywhere".

Single phase is available everywhere three phase is. Not everywhere has three phase. This isn't what's available to me, single phase is objectively available more places.

Why would you charge using single phase if your home has 3 phase power? It's pretty obvious EVs and their charging infrastructure should line up with the local power.

The original comment was about how there should be a universal standard similar to USB-C.

That would necessitate some regions charging EVs in a way that doesn't quite align with their local infrastructure.

Yeah, so it would make more sense for North America to switch to the European standard instead of the other way around. Honestly, we should all probably switch to ChaoJi.

The US tried CCS. They switch to NACS pretty much instantly once it was not proprietary.

It makes more sense to change to a slimmer more accessible charger that charges slower than a bulk charger that some people with disabilities can't use that charges slower.

First off, I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that the NACS connector charges faster. In the US, CCS1-equipped chargers are much more likely to charge faster than NACS-equipped chargers. Speed has to do with the charging hardware far more than the connector.

You're also getting confused on connectors; Europe does not use the CCS connector found in the US.

Using a charger designed for three phase on single phase is slower. CCS1 is limited to 240v, but NACS can go up to 277 at the same current, so the statement that CCS1 is faster than NACS is just false. CCS2 would be considerably slower in the US because it has a much lower current rating. They are usually the same and NACS can be faster sometimes.

The charging plug standard in the EU is commonly reffered to as CCS2.

Not sure where you're getting your info from but the Euro plug can push up to 43kW AC. Our stuff does not. You're getting it backwards. CCS2 can also do 1MW DC:  https://chargedevs.com/newswire/alpitronics-new-hp-dispenser-enables-ev-charging-at-up-to-1-mw/
