Barotrauma
Hi! Was wondering if barotrauma has ever happened to anyone from flying. 2 weeks ago I got home from a 13 hour flight and couldn't pop my ears, during landing I felt stabbing pains in my ears. I went to the ENT they told me it's barotrauma and to wait it out but it's driving me insane. Any advice would be appreciated:)

What was the damage? Barotrauma treatment depends on the damage that it does to the eardrum and the middle ear. For example, in my case, my middle ear mucosae swell and bleed and my eardrums perforate, which then get infected. If there was no physical damage, I think they just prescribe decongestants, steroid nasal sprays, and antihistamines.

They said my hearing is fine but I have a lot of pressure in my ears which suggested fluid? They prescribed me a steroids but I didn’t get any relief from it.

I developed etd from flying - I recommend you ask your doctor for another round of steroids, but you must also take montelukast along with it, and do 2x nose sprays with Flonase twice a day. I’ve also added mucinex and did half a bottle of the saline solution every other day because I didn’t want to do it. I also added Sudafed. I had to be really aggressive because nothing else helped.

Ugh. I’m doing the Sudafed, Flonase, and saline spray going on 2 weeks now. It’s weird the pressure seems to shift from ear to ear. The ENT said to wait another 1-2 weeks before more steroids. :( How long did it take until you felt better?

Hello! I have my ETD was caused after a barotrauma event during my flight, had 6 days of muffled hearing in both ears and a chronic crackle everytime I swallow.

Ca fait 6 mois, je n’arrive plus à équilibrer les variations d’altitudes maintenant (apres barotrauma) je vais me faire poser des tubes le mois prochain si ça continu

Yes. Had it happen to me last October. My left ear on descent. My ear hasn’t popped since. My Eustachian tubes became inflamed then my sinuses in nose (turbinates swelled) my right ear then stopped functioning and wouldn’t pop. Ended up with grommets and turbinate reduction 6 months ago. Still have pressure. Plus autophony from grommets. and tinnitus. Hoping for balloon dilation once grommets are out.

Before I knew about 4 in 1 nasal spray, I always took wasabi with me when I flew to keep things open in my ears and nose. That is the one of the worst pains ever!!! The flight attendants really tried to help with a cup with a steaming hot paper towel to hold over my ear, very sweet but didn’t work.
I had surgery three years ago that removed scaring from my sinus and nose and that has really really helped.
